We introduce computer simulation results that illustrate performance trade-offs associated with the mixed priority queueing model (MPQ) for the initial introductory phase of switching and demultiplexing fabrics for ATM based high-speed multimedia networking services. We study the hierarchical shared memory ATM switch architecture in which the queues for all the switch output ports share space flexibly in a common buffer. Using computer simulation of this shared buffer ATM switch under both uniform and bursty traffic, we investigate the delay and cell loss probability (CLP) for the each class of traffic. Our finding supports the MPQ model as a worthwhile strategy for buffer management to improve the quality of service (QOS) in an ATM etwork.< >

The importance of network centric warfare continues to grow in today's modern military. network centric warfare enables the military to access information across a secure worldwide network, anywhere, anytime, and conduct operations using this information. Determining which systems should make up this network and how to apportion resources are difficult questions to answer. These issues may have significant impacts on the outcome of engagements and on the success or failure of operations. It has been identified by this community that a modeling and simulation environment is needed to analyze how new and enhanced technologies affect operations. Modeling and simulation provide a means to quickly and relatively cheaply evaluate new technologies and to determine how best to utilize new and existing technologies. Currently NETWARS is the C4ISR network-modeling tool of choice. NETWARS was built to analyze network performance by providing a common tool and standard models to support the decision maker's ability to analyze impact of new technologies on network performance. The shortcoming of NETWARS is its inability to output metrics associated with operational effectiveness. Similarly, the Naval Simulation System (NSS) is a multi-warfare analysis tool developed to analyze operational metrics but provides coarse and sometimes incorrect assumptions of the underlying C4ISR network. Therefore by optimally combining the capabilities of the two respective tools, NETWARS and NSS, the modeling and simulation environment quality and depth of analysis would be greatly enhanced. This paper describes an effort to integrate NSS and NETWARS using Georgia Tech's DRTI (DRTI implements a substantial subset of HLA services) and the technical challenges encountered. A major portion of this work is middleware software called the DRTI-NETWARS plug-in that provides a suite of services needed to manage simulation time, the mapping of NSS objects to NETWARS objects, and facilitating communication

Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) communication has recently become an increasingly popular research topic in the area of wireless networking as well as the automotive industries. Recent advances in vehicular communications make it possible to realize Vehicular Sensor networks (VSN) where mobile vehicles are equipped with sensors of different nature which can sense events, process sensed data and route messages to other vehicles. The goal of VANET research is to develop a vehicular communication system to enable quick and cost-efficient distribution of data for the benefit of passengers' safety and comfort. VANETs are not just for fun, their aim is even to avoid accidents using periodic broadcast of messages containing vehicles' status information such as position and speed vector and a safety system aware of its surrounding to detect potential dangerous situations for the driver. Safety applications could avoid injuries, convenience and leisure applications could increase the comfort of the driver and passengers. In this paper, our main goal is efficient usage of available bandwidth and achieve a low-latency in delivering real time information in various situations in VSN. One of the most prominent issues in vehicular networks regards the quick and scalable delivery of data among all participants that share the same application. We develop an architectural solution that allows vehicles dynamically estimate their transmission range and to exploit this information to effectively propagate a broadcast message with as few hops and transmission as possible.

One of the most effective way to prevent unauthorized and corrupted message being forwarded in wireless sensor network. But there is high computational and communication overhead in addition to lack of scalability and resilience to node compromise attacks. So to address these issues, a polynomial-based scheme was recently introduced. However, this scheme and its extensions all have the weakness of a built-in threshold determined by the degree of the polynomial. when the number of messages transmitted is larger than this threshold, the adversary can fully recover the polynomial. In the existing system, an unconditionally secure and efficient source anonymous message authentication (SAMA) scheme is presented which is based on the optimal modified Elgamal signature (MES) scheme on elliptic curves. This MES scheme is secure against adaptive chosen-message attacks in the random oracle model. This scheme enables the intermediate nodes to authenticate the message so that all corrupted message can be detected and dropped to conserve the sensor power. While achieving compromise resiliency, flexible-time authentication and source identity protection, this scheme does not have the threshold problem. While enabling intermediate nodes authentication, this scheme allows any node to transmit an unlimited number of messages without suffering the threshold problem. But by using this method the black hole and gray hole attacks are detected but wormhole attack is doesn't detect. Because the wormhole attack is one of the harmful attacks which degrade the network performance. So, in the proposed system, one innovative technique is introduced which is called an efficient wormhole detection mechanism in the wireless sensor networks. In this method, considers the RTT between two successive nodes and those nodes' neighbor number which is needed to compare those values of other successive nodes. The Illinois Express Quantum network (IEQNET) is a program to realize metropolitan scale quantum networking over deployed optical fiber using currently available technology. IEQNET consists of multiple sites that are geographically dispersed in the Chicago metropolitan area. Each site has one or more quantum nodes (Q-Nodes) representing the communication parties in a quantum network. Q-Nodes generate or measure quantum signals such as entangled photons and communicate the measurement results via standard, classical signals and conventional networking processes. The entangled photons in IEQNET nodes are generated at multiple wavelengths, and are selectively distributed to the desired users via transparent optical switches. Here we describe the network architecture of IEQNET, including the Internet-inspired layered hierarchy that leverages softwaredefined networking (SDN) technology to perform traditional wavelength routing and assignment between the Q-Nodes. Specifically, SDN decouples the control and data planes, with the control plane being entirely implemented in the classical domain. We also discuss the IEQNET processes that address issues associated with synchronization, calibration, network monitoring, and scheduling. An important goal of IEQNET is to demonstrate the extent to which the control plane classical signals can co-propagate with the data plane quantum signals in the same fiber lines (quantum-classical signal "coexistence"). This goal is furthered by the use of tunable narrow-band optical filtering at the receivers and, at least in some cases, a wide wavelength separation between the quantum and classical channels. We envision IEQNET to aid in developing robust and practical quantum networks by demonstrating metro-scale quantum communication tasks such as entanglement distribution and quantum-state teleportation. As the amount of mobile data continues to grow rapidly, finding frequency bands without incumbent usage for mobile network operators (MNOs) in a harmonized manner becomes increasingly challenging. This motivates the search for new methods to increase the efficiency of current spectrum usage by exploring the new possibilities to allow multiple services to share the same frequency band in a controlled manner. This kind of spectrum sharing should be conducted in a way that requires minimum changes to the functionalities and the architecture of the systems involved and especially to the current holders of the spectrum usage rights, thus, the incumbent spectrum users. In this paper, we concentrate on the emerging Licensed Shared Access (LSA) concept which is currently receiving a lot of attention in European regulation and standardization. We discuss different types of incumbents and the critical factors for allowing spectrum sharing with LSA from their perspective. Finally, we propose an architecture for LSA that takes into account these critical factors while guaranteeing certain quality of service (QoS) conditions for all involved systems.

Adaptive applications are a key concept to take into account when dealing with multimedia internetworking in wireless and mobile environments in which abrupt changes in the network conditions may occur. In these scenarios not all the problems in the multimedia quality are due to congestion, as it happens in fixed networks, but also to interference, mobility, and many other issues. This paper presents an adaptation architecture allowing applications to use adaptation techniques at the application layer to minimize the impact of adverse and changing network conditions. This allows maintaining the QoS perceived by the user in an acceptable level. In addition, we optimize the adaptive behavior using genetic algorithms to estimate the optimal triggers for the adaptation function. We present some results comparing the fitness of using such adaptive techniques against the traditional multimedia internetworking.

A two-tier cellular network consists of a number of small microcells overlayed by larger macro (umbrella) cells. Such a network can support improved quality of service (QoS), higher capacity, and larger coverage area than existing networks. In this work, we study the channel allocation problem for a two-tier cellular network for two types of calls (voice and data), under different degrees of handoff overheads. We also compare the impact of two typical call admission algorithms on network performance. We observe that, when minimal handoff overheads are present, allocating more channels to the microcell layer results in lower blocking and dropout probabilities. Second, there is an optimal orthogonal assignment of channels between the two tiers that minimizes the blocking and the dropout probabilities, when handoff overheads are significant, suggesting a hierarchical approach for designing handoff controllers. Finally, on comparing two typical call admission algorithms, we show that an algorithm that treats all calls identically performs better than an algorithm which tries to assign calls to different tiers based on their holding times.

The authors describe the Energy Balance Information System which has the aim of identifying the management criticalities of the energy process, in order to plan actions aimed at energy saving from the point of view both technical and economic, as well as to support the Telecom Italia environmental balance. It is a flexible tool that follows the energy market evolution to constantly help the activity of the function which manages the company energy policy. So far, it has brought about significant savings both in economic and consumption terms; it is expected to allow further savings through the management of the liberalized energy market, by suggesting the best supply conditions. The paper describes the system in its own architecture, suggesting all the possible applications in their various contexts.

There has been a considerable expansion of alternative, VOIP based enterprise telephony networks in recent years. These networks have introduced stable and flexible cores that can be used to accommodate traffic from diverse set of edge applications. One of the newer developments in the access part of the network is introduction of wireless Ethernet as a medium that enables mobility and flexibility in accessing the network. Such a network can be used to enable access to all of the existing applications including real-time voice. However, the nature of the wireless medium and the way in which such access network is built requires special consideration when trying to use it for real-time traffic. Careful design can lead to a network that can be used for such a purpose, using standards based components. In order to properly design wireless access network, nature of real-time traffic needs to be examined.
