Next-generation wireless networks target high network availability, ubiquitous coverage, and extremely high data rates for mobile users. This requires exploring new frequency bands, e.g., mmWaves, moving toward ultra-dense deployments in urban locations, and providing ad hoc, resilient connectivity in rural scenarios. The design of the backhaul network plays a key role in advancing how the access part of the wireless system supports next-generation use cases. Wireless backhauling, such as the newly introduced Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) concept in 5G, provides a promising solution, also leveraging the mmWave technology and steerable beams to mitigate interference and scalability issues. At the same time, however, managing and optimizing a complex wireless backhaul introduces additional challenges for the operation of cellular systems. This paper presents a strategy for the optimal creation of the backhaul network considering various constraints related to network topology, robustness, and flow management. We evaluate its feasibility and efficiency using synthetic and realistic network scenarios based on 3D modeling of buildings and ray tracing. We implement and prototype our solution as a dynamic IAB control framework based on the Open Radio Access network (RAN) architecture, and demonstrate its functionality in Colosseum, a large-scale wireless network emulator with hardware in the loop.

Time synchronization is crucial in the architecture of modern communication networks, supporting numerous high-stakes applications like financial transactions, autonomous vehicle control, and data center operations. While traditional time synchronization protocols, specifically the network Time Protocol (NTP) and Precision Time Protocol (PTP), are reliable for various applications, they fall short in scenarios requiring ultra-high precision and resilience. To address these limitations, this paper provides a comprehensive comparative analysis of two emerging quantum technologies, namely Time-Correlated Entangled Photons (TCEP) and optical Lattice Clocks (OLC). Using Monte Carlo simulations, we examined the synchronization in terms of the accuracy of these technologies under various noise conditions, revealing that while TCEP works perfectly in low-noise environments, its efficacy diminishes significantly with increasing noise levels. On the contrary, OLCs demonstrate consistent performance across various noise levels, making them more versatile for diverse application scenarios. This study is foundational for integrating quantum technologies in time synchronization for communication networks and sheds light on their merits and challenges. Our findings open new avenues for research in scalability, environmental resilience, and the development of hybrid quantum-classical timekeeping systems. Integrating quantum-enhanced time synchronization into a communication network will be the key step for achieving full-fledged Quantum Internet and quantum-enhanced communication networks.

Aiming for the median solution between cyber-intensive optimal power flow (OPF) solutions and subpar local control, this work advocates deciding inverter injection setpoints using deep neural networks (DNNs). Instead of fitting OPF solutions in a black-box manner, inverter DNNs are naturally integrated with the feeder model and trained to minimize a grid-wide objective subject to inverter and network constraints enforced on the average over uncertain grid conditions. Learning occurs in a quasi-stationary fashion and is posed as a stochastic OPF, handled via stochastic primal-dual updates acting on grid data scenarios. Although trained as a whole, the proposed DNN is operated in a master-slave architecture. Its master part is run at the utility to output a condensed control signal broadcast to all inverters. Its slave parts are implemented by inverters and are driven by the utility signal along with local inverter readings. This novel DNN structure uniquely addresses the small-big data conundrum where utilities collect detailed smart meter readings yet on an hourly basis, while in real time inverters should be driven by local inputs and minimal utility coordination to save on communication. Numerical tests corroborate the efficacy of this physics-aware DNN-based inverter solution over an optimal control policy.

Helmet detection(HD) is critical for modern intelligent systems to locate and identify various bike riders without helmets. HD is challenging due to several issues, such as the helmet’s shapes, color, and designs, uneven outlines, angle changes, and occlusion. Automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) technology recognizes the optical character on the number plate and locates the bike riders without a helmet by detecting the license plate. This research focuses on identifying the helmet detection of the bike images captured by CCTV in India. This paper presents an HD approach to address the problems as mentioned earlier. The suggested strategy consists of the following steps. First, the You Only Look Once version 8 (YOLOv8) network detects an image of a bike that shows up in an input image. The helmet is next detected within the indicated bike using morphological techniques, and finally, the network is employed to recognize license plates. The simulation results test shows an accuracy rate of 99.34% and character recognition of 98.76% , respectively.

ANKA is a 2.5 GeV synchrotron radiation light source being built in Karlsruhe, Germany. The control system for the accelerator is based on the three-tier standard model architecture. However, modern products based on standards in distributed objects and networking are applied in addition to low-cost hardware including PCs. We use the LonWorks field bus network with intelligent nodes and standard I/O modules to connect the individual devices directly to PCs that run device servers under Windows NT. Those PCs act as WWW servers for data transmission, application distribution and documentation retrieval. Applications in the control room run also on Windows NT hosts as WWW clients. However, they could run in any Web-browser on any platform, because all operator control is performed through a Web-browser with Java applets/applications. The communication with the control system data servers is done through CORBA. CORBA objects are wrapped in JavaBeans which are simply connected with commercial data-manipulation and visualization Beans into full-fledged applications or applets. First experiences with this control system during the operation of the ANKA microtron are presented.

This paper analyses a number of systems and control issues associated with the design of a low orbit communications satellite network. This paper discusses the adaptation of ISDN ATM protocols to the constraints inherent with laser communications. The main proposed change is to replace the link-by-link off band routing by in band arrow routing. The first field is coded using several laser colors, such as to trigger, without delays, the switching of the incoming cell, from the incoming receiver to the outgoing laser. The laser beam is generated and steered by an array of semiconductor lasers and concentrated by a telescope. Monopulse measurement of the direction of incoming light is performed using several arrays of photodiodes. The whole concept is based on precise pointing of the transmitting beam towards the receiving satellite. It also requires a very precise estimation of the position and synchronization of the satellite nodes. This requires solving of three control problems. The first control problem involves the estimation of the position and synchronization of the satellite using the measurement of the propagation time and range from the other transmitting satellites. This problem is solved by a Kalman filter. The second control problem involves the estimation of the satellite attitude and its stabilization. Since precise attitude tracking of the receiving satellite demands much electrical power, an alternative low power consumption method is proposed. This proposal is based on the concept of estimation rather than precise tracking of the receiving satellite. Since the relative positions of both satellites are known, the attitude of the satellite can be estimated very precisely. In order to avoid the problem of alignment of the transmitter and receiver channels, the estimation of the pointing is performed, when possible, using the reflection of the transmitted fight on a total reduction prism placed on the receiving satellite. Aiming at improving the consumption rate and economy of high penetration renewable energy grids, this paper proposes a coordinated control strategy of source-load-storage coordination considering the regulatory abilities in the market environment. The coordination and control architecture of the new energy system was first established, which fully considered the system functions such as monitoring, prediction and scheduling management and the communication structure of the system. Base on this, with the goal of maximizing the comprehensive benefits on the source side, the grid side, and the load side, a coordinated optimization model of the source, grid, load, and storage is established. In addition, this paper embeds a set of two-layer evaluation indicators for the coordinated regulatory abilities in the proposed model to measure the potential of the control resources in terms of coordinated control, cost and incentives. The case study shows the adaptability of the proposed method to measure the resource characteristics under the conditions of single-period and multi-period and the results of coordinated scheduling optimization under different confidence levels are obtained.

Cognitive Radio and Dynamic TDMA for efficient UAVs swarm communications

In the last decades, under technological progress in electronic and avionics systems, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have known an increasing use in several military and civilian missions. Multiple UAVs can cooperatively carry out dangerous applications for human operators or missions where human intervention is not needed, such as surveillance and monitoring of areas of interest and physical infrastructures. Due to the lack of proper communication rules and standards, communication remains one of the most crucial design issues for UAVs swarm. Furthermore, UAVs generally operate in frequency bands shared with other users. Hence, these spectral bands become overcrowded and UAVs may face a spectrum scarcity issue. To address the above challenges, it is essential to define a reliable communication architecture for multiple UAVs coordination and efficient bandwidth sharing. A promising technology that can satisfy the spectrum requirements of the emerging UAVs networks is Cognitive Radio network (CRN). The goal is to opportunistically use spectral bands with minimum interference to other users or applications, i.e., primary users. In this paper, we consider the problem of spectrum scarcity encountered by UAVs. We present a centralized CRN-based communication approach for UAVs-Ground control Station (GCS) communication. The GCS is used as a central coordinator to handle bandwidth usage for the UAVs swarm in its coverage zone. It selects, allocates, and shares available frequencies using CRN and Software Defined Radio (SDR). To share the available CRN-frequency between the different UAVs in its scope, the GCS uses dynamic Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) technique. The performance of the proposed communication approach is evaluated in a surveillance context in terms of the total time required to transfer UAVs data, the total number of packets sent, and the achieved throughput.

High phosphate levels in aquatic ecosystems induce eutrophication, which causes algae to overgrow and disrupt biodiversity. Determining the phosphate concentration is significant for maintaining optimal ecological function and water quality. In this study, five machine learning regression techniques were investigated for detecting the phosphate level of an aquaculture environment. The computational models employed physico-limnological data such as pH level, electrical conductivity, and water temperature as predictors, acquired from the tilapia fishpond in Rizal, Philippines. These models were evaluated based on the defined criteria such as the predictive performance and mean absolute error. all machine learning models produced acceptable results with R 2 value greater than 0.8. Among these, the feed-forward neural network model is concluded to be the most effective phosphate prediction model with R 2 =0.93 and MAE=0.39. Furthermore, a hybrid approach of multigene genetic programming and genetic algorithm (MGGP-GA) was implemented for optimization of phosphate level. GPTIPSv2, a MGGP tool, was used to create symbolic models. The model with the highest predictive accuracy and lower complexity was configured as the key component of GA architecture. This optimization technique produced an optimum parameter value of 21.79°C for water temperature, 6.9 for pH, and 0.74 mS/cm for electrical conductivity with a fitness value evaluation of 7.521. With that, this approach serves as an effective technique for in situ managing the nutrient content, particularly the phosphate level of aquatic systems.

Oil field asset owners and operators face two primary issues in exploration and production;asset productivity and operating efficiency. Typically, operators do not have visibility to sense the current state of the oil field and respond with actions to reduce well down-time or increase the oil flow. These sense-and-respond capabilities have been limited by the remoteness of this "First Mile" and its fundamental lack of connectivity. Recent advances in wireless technologies resolve this limitation, and operators are looking to extend the office experience into the first mile, creating sophisticated sense and respond capabilities that increase asset productivity while reducing costs and improving communication and collaboration.
