For 5G network softwarization, Software Defined networking (SDN) and network Function Virtualization (NFV) have emerged as key technologies to enable efficient network management. 5G network virtualization will allow multiple service providers to share a single physical infrastructure offering an abstraction between the user and physical resources. As we move towards softwarized 5G networks, scalability issues, network performance with respect to Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) and QoE-aware resource management remain less studied topics. In this paper, we adopt the SDN control logic to perform an autonomic QoE-aware resource management approach in virtualized 5G networks. We propose QoESoft, a network softwarization strategy for multimedia streaming services that performs a dynamic link and switch resources management in softwarized 5G systems. With QoESoft, we aim to improve user QoE for multimedia services through efficient monitoring and adaptation of the average load of the substrate links and switches and resource costs of mapped virtual links in 5G networks. The performance of the proposed approach is analysed in testbed environments. Preliminary results indicate that, QoESoft achieves better performance than the compared baseline approach in terms of link and switch resources utilization by 78% and 70% respectively. A video reception quality ratio metric and visual inspection on the output video both confirmed significant improvements in video QoE.

In the deployment of 5 G and the development of the future 6 G, a set of use cases are generated that require URLLC (Ultra-Reliable Low Latency communications) service-type communications with very low latency and extremely high reliability. At the same time, verticals such as Industry 4.0 require Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that can only be offered by deterministic networks. Time Sensitive networking (TSN) is a set of IEEE 802.1 standards that aim to provide highly reliable, low-latency deterministic communications over Ethernet. The IEEE 802.1Qcc standard defines three architectural models for TSN networks. One of them is fully centralized, which is based on an SDN architecture where the control plane is distributed between two entities: the Centralized network Configuration (CNC) and the Centralized User Configuration (CUC). These systems’ increasing complexity and scalability led to the introduction of Machine Learning (ML) tools that will allow them to move towards zero-touch. Currently, solutions are proposed using Integer Linear Programming (ILP), whose computational complexity implies a significant lack of scalability, which worsens as the network size or traffic heterogeneity increases. This paper describes a traffic scheduling and routing algorithm based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL), which is located in the CNC, receiving requests from CUC users and configuring and maintaining the Gate control lists of the Ethernet switches. The proposed mechanism jointly solves a deterministic routing of data flows with scheduling. This proposal also optimizes the load balancing of the links and the occupation of the time slots of each link.

In multicore System-on-Chips (SoCs), network on Chip (NoC) is utilized to facilitate on chip communication due to its benefits over bus-based topologies, specifically as chip sizes go smaller. Asynchronous, synchronous, or Globally Asynchronous and Locally Synchronous (GALS) NoC implementations are all possible. Although, efficiency of synchronous designs is confined by relies on slowest critical path and clock rates, it is essential to optimize every aspect of design. In this paper, an efficient asynchronous design is proposed for efficiently control FIFO buffers based on the time-consuming features of the system by preventing clock distribution issues and clock skew on chip. It also aids in improving efficiency of circular buffer by managing memory circularly and enables optimization solutions for infrequently utilized parts in system. Operation in terms of delays, offering effective performance as compared to low performance produced by synchronous counterpart, in addition to benefit of lower power consumption. In NoC routers, buffers are essential elements. In this paper, TSMC 180nm platform, Linear Technology Simulation program with integrated circuit emphasis (LT Spice) is employed to simulate a four-stage First in First out (FIFO) buffer depending on domino logic in asynchronous mode. The proposed asynchronous architecture maintains an operation in terms of throughput and latency while using 50% less power and minimal chip area than synchronous design, according to results.

The VANET type networks (Vehicular Ad-Hoc networks) are a particular case of ad-hoc wireless networks. These networks are formed by equipping vehicles with short-range wireless communication devices. The development of VANET network applications and protocols brings some unique security issues dictated by the devices in use, vehicles' sporadic connectivity, the high degree of relevance given by their geographical location discovery. The paper presents a security protocol used in VANET networks (Vehicular Ad-Hoc networks). The motivation behind this work is based on the current void of adequate mechanisms to ensure standardized property security in vehicular ad-hoc environments of today. Now, there is a serious lack of mechanisms for possible attack detection and also a lack of means to neutralize them. The solutions developed so far do not cover all security aspects, not being yet standardized and accepted among the scientific community. The security solution exposed in this paper is based on the vehicle's position when sending messages, the time when emission occurs, and existence of certification authorities in the area at the starting moment of information transmittal, which guarantees a secure message transmission in the VANET environment.

The 802.11 commercial devices adopt a simple FIFO scheduler, which does not allow to isolate flows addressed to different destinations. This characteristic leads to the well-known performance anomaly of 802.11: when one or more STAs experiment poor radio channel conditions, they increase the time spent to transmit a single packet leading to an inefficient use of the shared medium. These phenomena have as a consequence the worsening of the performance of all the STAs sharing the wireless medium independently of their radio channel conditions. In this scenario, the paper proposes an architecture for a scheduling algorithm to implement in the AP for the downlink traffic, based on Hierarchical Token Bucket (HTB). The peculiarity of the proposed architecture is its ability to take into account, besides the transport service class required by the destination user, the channel quality experimented by the destination mobile STAtion (STA). Starting from this architecture two scheduling schemes are then proposed: the wireless HTB (WHTB) and the time-based WHTB (TWHTB). Both schemes are implemented in a prototype of AP. Hence, the performance of the proposed scheduling algorithms are experimentally evaluated and compared with those obtained with standard scheduling algorithm, which do not take into account information on channel quality. Finally, the paper presents a comparison in terms of implementation issues highlighted by the two proposed schemes, during the developing phase and the experimental analysis.

The growing demand for location-based services in areas like virtual reality, robot control, and navigation has intensified the focus on indoor localization. Visible light positioning (VLP), leveraging visible light communications (VLC), becomes a promising indoor positioning technology due to its high accuracy and low cost. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of VLP systems. In particular, since VLC lays the foundation for VLP, we first present a detailed overview of the principles of VLC. Then, we provide an in-depth overview of VLP algorithms. The performance of each positioning algorithm is also compared in terms of various metrics such as accuracy, coverage, and orientation limitation. Beyond the physical layer studies, the network design for a VLP system is also investigated, including multi-access technologies, resource allocation, and light-emitting diode (LED) placements. Next, the applications of the VLP systems are overviewed. Finally, this paper outlines open issues, challenges, and opportunities for the research field. In a nutshell, this paper constitutes the first holistic survey on VLP from state-of-the-art studies to practical uses. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. all rights reserved.

A traditional way to improve security of wired computer network can be achieved by applying access control policies to the front door of network. However these policies may be not sufficient and effective any more when applied to the wireless local area networks (WLANs). WLANs are different from the traditional wired LANs in terms of their exposure to potential threats, vulnerability and security techniques. Intrusions to WLANs are facts of the everyday life and handling them becomes more and more difficult. Currently there is no standardised reference model which may help to design, compare and evaluate the existing or future intrusion handling systems (IHSs) for WLANs. Analysis of the commercial IHSs shows that they all are built as a proprietary systems which are neither taking into consideration existence of other IHSs nor they are trying to find the ways to establish inter-IHS collaboration which may help to achieve better security for the end- users. Hence this paper starts by an analysis of the features of existing IHSs for WLANs, follows with proposing the new ways to enhance their design, and then is discussing development of such a novel reference model for a scalable distributed IHS architecture.

Energy storage systems are critical elements in Plug-In, hybrid and full electric vehicle (EV, HEV, and PHEV) applications. In these systems, lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries are now preferred for their outstanding characteristics and advantages. For high voltage applications, battery cells are connected in series, raising the issue of voltage and charge balancing among the cells. This paper presents a new topology that uses modular highly integrated dc-dc converters to perform active balancing. The proposed modular architecture, which enables a real time balancing of all cells, can be used for any number of cells connected in series. It does not require control communications between the converters, and naturally distributes the energy among the cells according to their state of charge (SOC) and capacity data, extracted from the associated Battery Management System (BMS). Design and control details are provided for low-voltage, low-power dual active bridge (DAB) power converters. They have been selected as converter modules for their high compliance to the hybrid integration criteria such as reduced number and value of passive components, monolithic integration of the active devices and ease of driving control. Experimental results are presented for four series connected 3.2V 10Ah Li-Ion battery cells balanced by three DAB converters embedded onto the commercial BMS.

The Internet-of-Things (IoT) gets real in today's life and is becoming part of pervasive and ubiquitous computing networks offering distributed and transparent services. A unified and common data processing and communication methodology is required to merge the IoT, sensor networks, and Cloud-based environments seamless, which can be fulfilled by the mobile agent-based computing paradigm, discussed in this work. Currently, portability, resource constraints, security, and scalability of Agent Processing Platforms (APP) are essential issues for the deployment of Multi-agent systems (MAS) in strong heterogeneous networks including the Internet, addressed in this work. To simplify the development and deployment of MAS it would be desirable to implement agents directly in JavaScript, which is a well known and public widespread used programming language, and JS VMs are available on all host platforms including WEB browsers. The novel proposed JS Agent Machine (JAM) is capable to execute AgentJS agents in a sandbox environment with full run-time protection and Machine learning as a service. Agents can migrate between different JAM nodes seamless preserving their data and control state by using a on-the-fly code-to-text transformation in an extended JSON+ format. A Distributed Organization System (DOS) layer provides JAM node connectivity and security in the Internet, completed by a Directory-Name Service offering an organizational graph structure. Agent authorization and platform security is ensured with capability-based access and different agent privilege levels.
