PLC’s are the control hubs for a wide variety of automated systems and processes. Advanced control features, network connectivity and device interoperability are all capabilities increasingly demanded in a modern industrial application. To get in-depth knowledge of any system requires thorough studies of the system up to the designing level;this paper provides better vision for designing aspects of any basic PLC for the amateur(s) or experts already working with the system. This paper emphasizes on various aspects like designing issues related to PLC, designing algorithms and implementation of DTMF connectivity. The enhancement in approachability in PLC systems can be achieved by implementing the designed DTMF module into PLC, by virtue of which accessibility of the respective system can be achieved from any location of the world. The integral feature of any smart system, that is, password protection has also been framed in the designed algorithm. The performance is illustrated on a field test for fan control application.

Reducing the total power consumption and network delay are among the most interesting issues facing large scale Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) systems and their ability to satisfy the Service Level Agreement (SLA). Such systems utilize cloudlet based infrastructure to support off-loading some of user's computationally heavy tasks to the cloudlets. However, the limited capabilities of the cloudlet system (in terms of the ability of serve different request type and the ability to serve users in large geographical regions) represent serious challenges to achieve those objectives. To cover the users demand for different types of services and in wide geographical regions, cloudlets cooperate among each others by passing user requests from one cloudlets to another. By adapting this cooperation, the total power consumption per request will be increased so that it includes the power consumption between the user and the local cloudlet and the power consumption of passing the request to a remote cloudlet. In this paper, we consider two types of cloudlets: local cloudlets and global cloudlets. The global cloudlets are a special kind of local cloudlets but with higher capabilities. The user can connect only to the local cloudlet and sends all its traffics to it. If the local cloudlet cannot serve the desired request, then the request is moved to other local cloudlet. If no local cloudlet can serve the request, then it is moved to a global cloudlet in which it can serve all service types. We optimize the power consumption for large scale cooperative cloudlets and evaluate the proposed model under two realistic scenarios. The result prove that the proposed model can be used to optimize power consumption in large scale MCC systems.

In this paper we propose a hybrid WDM/TDM PON architecture that utilizes a combined ring-star based connectivity to provide shared protection against optical line terminal (OLT) failure. We have further proposed an appropriate control mechanism to reduce the protection switching time. We have evaluated the availability figures of the network service per end-user subject to different failure scenarios within the proposed network architecture along with its associated capital expenditure (CAPEX) per user. Finally we have demonstrated that our proposed architecture provides a significant cost benefit over 1:1 protection scheme for achieving almost the same value of network availability.

The EU-funded XtreemOS project implements a grid operating system transparently exploiting resources of virtual organizations through the standard POSIX interface. Grid checkpointing and restart requires to save and restore jobs executing in a distributed heterogeneous grid environment. The latter may spawn millions of grid nodes ( PCs, clusters, and mobile devices ) using different system-specific checkpointers saving and restoring application and kernel data structures for processes executing on a grid node. In this paper we shortly describe the XtreemOS grid checkpointing architecture and how we bridge the gap between the abstract grid and the system-specific checkpointers. Then we discuss how we keep track of processes and how different process grouping techniques are managed to ensure that all processes of a job and any further dependent ones can be checkpointed and restarted. Finally, we present how Linux control groups can be used to address resource isolation issues during the restart.

In recent years, there has been a tremendous increase in the cellular traffic due to the availability of wide range of devices: smart phones, net-books, tablets, etc. The existing cellular networks will be unable to cater to the increasing demands in near future, thus we need technological enhancements in the cellular infrastructure to meet the ever increasing user requirements. Various approaches have been suggested to increase the existing cellular capacity and provide higher data rates, some of which include deployment of small cells under the coverage area of Macro cells, where a cell denotes the region covered by a particular base station (BS). However, since these small cells cover small regions there exists a significant handover signalling overhead. We suggest an approach where small cells, called Phantom cells, are deployed within the Macro cell coverage area, and the existing Macro BS functions as the centralized controller for all the Phantom BSs deployed within its range. Phantom BSs act as a supplement to the existing Radio Access network in the LTE infrastructure where it handles the data plane (D-plane) and Macro BSs handle the control plane (C-plane). This paper proposes the definitions of C-plane and D-plane, the modifications in the user equipment (UE) protocol stack which enable the concurrent operation with dual BSs (Phantom and Macro). Mechanisms are developed for the communication of a Phantom BS with a Macro BS over the new interface (X3 interface). NS-3 simulations were performed incorporating the designed architecture for Phantom based HetNets and a significant improvement in UE throughput is observed in comparision with legacy networks comprising of Macro BS.

The increasing quantity of automobiles on the road these days has resulted in chronic traffic jams and difficulties with urban traffic control. Increased traffic bottlenecks are mostly caused by unlicensed and unregulated parking. The management of present parking spots is ineffective, and traffic-related problems are made worse by a lack adequate real-time advice and general ignorance. The constrained growth of highways and other transportation and related infrastructure highlights the urgent need for a clever, flexible, and effective parking solution. We suggest a complex multi-layer design for intelligent parking facilities to overcome these issues. This system uses cutting-edge extended, low-power wireless communications, powerful edge and cloud computing processing capacity, and sensor nodes with different parameters for parking spots. By dynamically managing large areas and providing drivers with real-time information on parking spaces and related services via continuous vehicle tracking, our proposed system seeks to transform parking management. We also provide a dynamic pricing strategy that aims to maximise parking authority income while guaranteeing drivers have the best possible availability of parking spaces. By addressing the problems caused by careless parking and improving general traffic control, this all-encompassing strategy aims to improve the effectiveness and smooth operation of the city's transport network.

IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN is the most popular and most widely deployed Wi-Fi technology in the world. With the explosion in use of wireless networks comes the demand for them to support the latest technologies. Task group E of the 802.11 standard is working on a standard that adds quality of service enhancements in the 802.11 MAC layer by using traffic flows and prioritizing traffic according to what type of application it belongs to. There are, however, some weaknesses in the design that is currently being proposed by the 802.11 standards committee. In this paper, we propose enhancements to the IEEE 802.11 draft standard in an attempt to provide improved quality of service for all traffic priorities. Through our simulations we are able to show that we can do so without negatively affecting the performance of any of the wireless stations in the network or the traffic flows that they contain. Our results show that the proposed scheme provides an attractive and effective mechanism for enhancing the IEEE 802.11 standard.

The fifteen papers in this special issue focus on ultra low loss planar waveguides and the applications. Ultra-low loss optical planar waveguide technology is a critical research area driven by the need to improve energy efficiency and advance the power handling capability, performance, function and complexity of photonic integrated circuits and systems-on-chip. An increasing number of applications require lower planar waveguides losses and advances in materials, waveguide design, processing techniques and monolithic and heterogeneous integration. Low loss operation from the visible to the infrared and passive and active waveguide structures as well as linear and non-linear optical devices are needed. Examples of applications driving these advancements include data-communications, bio-sensing, positioning and navigation, low noise microwave synthesizers, spectroscopy, RF signal processing, quantum communication, and atomic clocks. The special issue comes at an important stage in low loss waveguides and photonic integration and the purpose is to demonstrate the current state-of-the-art in the area of this technology and highlight recent progress and trends to lower waveguide loss, as the key element to realize new functions and their potential applications.

Orbital structures are currently limited by the payload capacity of launch vehicles. Satellite mass and volume constraints restrict the maximum size of solar arrays, antenna diameters, fuel tanks, and other satellite subsystems, thereby limiting overall satellite capability and effectiveness. In this study we address these issues by proposing the assembly of global telecommunications satellite network, the Ansible, that takes advantage of on-orbit telerobotic assembly and modular spacecraft design, thus surpassing other modem communication satellite networks. The Ansible network would provide several simultaneous global services, ranging from low data rate transmission to the satellite from a small low-power device, to very high data rate transmission to a small number of fixed ground stations, with intermediate levels of service in between. The ability to significantly vary levels and types of services is not currently available in the telecommunications market. This uniquely versatile satellite service is made possible with the use of steerable, hopping beams, regulated by an on-board processor that also controls the demodulation. The Ansible design utilizes many advanced technologies including telerobotic assembly, a reusable solar orbit transfer vehicle, tethered powersail, lightweight truss structure with integrated power distribution and thermal control system, deployable looped heat pipe radiators and lightweight, deployable Ka-band antennae. The mission architecture, technical specifications of the satellite, and robot are all presented and justitied. Models for the cost, mass, power and performance of the satellite are given and comparisons are drawn against existing, conventional satellite telecommunications networks, quantifying the many advantages of modular on-orbit satellite construction.

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) is adapting current data networking technologies to fly on future spaceflight missions. The benefits of using commercially based networking standards and protocols have been widely discussed and are expected to include reduction in overall mission cost, shortened integration and test (I&T) schedules, increased operations flexibility, and hardware and software upgradeability/scalability with developments ongoing in the commercial world. The networking effort is a comprehensive one encompassing missions ranging from small University Explorer (UNEX) class spacecraft to large observatories such as the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST). Mission aspects such as flight hardware and software, ground station hardware and software, operations, RF communications, and security (physical and electronic) are all being addressed to ensure a complete end-to-end system solution. One of the current networking development efforts at GSFC is the SpaceLAN (Spacecraft Local Area network) project, development of a space-qualifiable Ethernet network. To this end we have purchased an IEEE 802.3-compatible 10/100/1000 Media Access control (MAC) layer Intellectual Property (IP) core and are designing a network node interface (NNI) and associated network components such as a switch. These systems will ultimately allow the replacement of the typical MIL-STD-1553/1773 and custom interfaces that inhabit most spacecraft. In this paper we will describe our current Ethernet NNI development along with a novel new space qualified physical layer that will be used in place of the standard interfaces. We will outline our plans for development of space qualified network components that mill allow future spacecraft to operate in significant radiation environments while using a single onboard network for reliable commanding and data transfer.
