To ensure Evolved-Universal Terrestrial Radio Access network (E-UTRA) or Long Term Evolution (LTE) can coexist with other mobile systems operating in the same geographical area, coexistence studies involving E-UTRA are ongoing in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Related work is also on the way in China communications Standards Association (CCSA) which may influence the allocation of frequency bands. In this paper, coexistence issues between E-UTRA and Universal Terrestrial Radio Access network (UTRA) deployed in adjacent frequency bands are investigated. Two classical approaches are used to evaluate the performance degradation of both systems caused by inter-system interference. One is theoretical analysis and the other is system level simulation. The deterministic calculation is carried out in detail for base station (BS) to BS interference scenario, while the static Monte-Carlo simulation is adopted to analyze almost all the interference scenarios. System level evaluation methodology and assumptions are provided, and simulation results for a number of typical scenarios are discussed. The results show that E-UTRA has the ability to resist interference to some extent, but it brings severe interference to UTRA, and the interference between base stations is more severe than other scenarios. It is also found that the offset of E-UTRA system sites, different frequency bandwidths and power control schemes have various impacts on UTRA performance, so they should be carefully considered during E-UTRA deployment to ensure the coexistence with UTRA.

Scaling analysis provides a systematic way to translate the performance of a system from one size domain, operating environment, etc., to another. In this paper, we identify scaling issues and present some simple results in the domain of individual mobile robots, as well as teams, swarms, etc., deployed on sensing missions. Since most robot-based sensing missions anticipate mini-, micro-, and nano-scale robots, our explicit examples focus on scaling-down of existing human-scale robot design and concepts. However the principles articulated apply equally to scaling-up situations. The topic is introduced via a simple example that shows why scaling-down of mobile robots that carry their own energy source will generally prove impractical: to obtain reasonable operating times it will rather be necessary to develop small robots into which energy can be beamed, or which can forage for energy sources in the environment. From this concrete illustrative example, the paper moves on to a higher level discussion of robot architecture and the applicability of scaling principles, to varying degrees, to all the modules, i.e., it is not exclusively a mobility issue. There follows a short discussion of how changes of scale are not inherently problematic, but to the contrary, in many cases suitable scale change provides the key to solving a difficult engineering problem. The final section is a quantitative example in which design and operating parameters of the robotic nodes of a sensor network are considered from the perspective of operating time limited by the energy cost of node-to-node communication. This example powerfully illustrates a system in which fairly modest changes contemplated range of engineering parameters result in enormous changes in the anticipated operating time of the system.

An explosive growth in the number of mobile users necessitates higher capacities in the cellular network infrastructure. Emerging real-time services such as VoIP and Video on Demand have stringent delay requirements. Long Term Evolution (LTE) has been developed to provide higher data rates, lower latency for real-time services through Differentiated Services (DiffServ) support, and lower cost of operation with its all-IP based architecture. The LTE MAC scheduler plays a crucial role to achieve these objectives by distributing available radio resources among User Equipments (UEs). In this paper, a novel LTE downlink scheduling algorithm taking both channel qualities and traffic types of UEs into account is proposed. First, incoming traffic is classified into real-time and nonreal-time flows which are inserted into a priority list according to traffic types and channel qualities. The scheduler assigns available resource blocks to UEs using the order in the list. A reconfigurable parameter in the proposed scheduler determines the resource prioritization level for real-time services, and hence allows network administrators to more effectively control the resource allocation according to the QoS requirements of UEs and changing network dynamics. OMNeT++ based simulations demonstrate that the tradeoff between the performance improvement of UDP flows and the performance degradation of TCP flows can be controlled by tuning the reconfigurable traffic prioritization parameter of the proposed scheduling algorithm.

The migration of wireless mobile networks from the relatively limited microwave radio spectrum to the “all-spectrum” principle of communication, which aims to make use of microwave and millimeter wave mobile networks as well as fixed point sub-terahertz and visible light communications, has predetermined the need for new network paradigm. Therefore, designing an efficient network along with specialized protection system that encompasses the densely distributed remote radio units (RRUs) as well as fronthaul fiber links and their RF interfaces becomes increasingly important and complex. In this paper, we first analyze the function split concept in the design of fronthaul schemes, mindful of the required fronthaul bandwidth and RRU complexity. We then experimentally demonstrate a mobile-fronthaul protection algorithm that supports proactive, low complexity self-healing by making use of low complexity RRUs while imposing minimum changes on fronthaul performance. The proposed scheme exploits RF domain switching to support seamless 5G-grade service restoration in less than 2 microseconds without causing any service disruption to connected users.

The fifth generation (5G) and beyond networks have the potential to meet the increasing demands of emerging applications and industry verticals for high throughputs and reliable low latency communication under various mobility scenarios. Also, there is a great demand for new user experiences that would require greater uplink performance from these networks. To meet these expectations from 5G networks, critical gaps need to be filled before they can be fully implemented for mobile applications in complex environments like smart cities. Millimeter wave frequencies can significantly increase the performance of these networks, but they also suffer from reliability issues due to limited transmission range. Many uplink enhancement technologies, like multi-connectivity, carrier aggregation, etc., have been proposed to improve the performance, but they all either add to the user equipment (UE) complexity or increase the deployment costs. We develop a novel multilink scheme for the uplink where the UE performs only a single transmission on a common channel, and every base station that receives this signal would accept and process it. Our solution reduces frequent handovers and allows high UE mobility with no additional complexity. We propose and evaluate this novel 5G deployment with multilink using the Simu5G network simulator for enabling future 5G systems. The proposed 5G architecture is shown to meet the requirements of next-generation applications. Our simulations show that the proposed technique improves the throughput by up to 54%, the latency by up to 27.61%, and the reliability by up to 91.36% compared to a single link system.

This paper describes a one-hop self-organized clustering (SOC) algorithm developed specifically for ultra-wideband (UWB) networks. Our research is motivated by the strict regulation of the transmit power of UWB devices, as imposed by U.S. Federal communications Commission (FCC). To comply with FCC power regulations and to maximize network capacity, we propose a heuristic clustering algorithm to form clusters that have the minimum total power emission subject to constraints on radio range and multiple access capacity. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than a random selection algorithm in terms of power emission under all circumstances. Furthermore, the performance of the SOC algorithm can approach that of the k-means algorithm when an appropriate upper limit on the number of nodes in a cluster is imposed.

In this paper the design, implementation, and evaluation of a general purpose smartphone based intelligent surveillance system is presented. It has two main elements;i) a detection module, and ii) a classification module. The detection module is based on the recently introduced approach that combines the well-known background subtraction method with the optical flow and recursively estimated density. The classification module is based on a neural network using Deep Learning methodology. Firstly, the architecture design of the convolutional neural network is presented and analyzed in the context of the four selected architectures (two of them recent successful types) and two custom modifications specifically made for the problem at hand. The results are carefully evaluated, and the best one is selected to be used within the proposed system. In addition, the system is implemented on both a PC (using Linux type OS) and on a smartphone (using Android). In addition to the compatibility with all modern Android-based devices, most GPU-powered platforms such as Raspberry Pi, Nvidia Tegra X1 and Jetson run on Linux. The proposed system can easily be installed on any such device benefiting from the advantage of parallelisation for faster execution. The proposed system achieved a performance which surpasses that of a human (classification accuracy of the top 1 class >95.9% for automatic recognition of a detected object into one of the seven selected categories. For the top-2 classes, the accuracy is even higher (99.85%). That means, at least, one of the two top classes suggested by the system is correct. Finally, a number of visual examples are showcased of the system in use in both PC and Android devices.

In 2013, Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) issued out a tender to upgrade Nkula substation A&B. After the bidding process, in March 2014, Apollo International was awarded the contract to do the upgrade as the main contractor and they appointed SMEC International as consultants for the project. Apollo International went on to sub-contract some parts of the project scope. After negotiations, Ingeteam Power Grid Automation (PGA) was awarded the Substation Automation System (SAS) scope of the project for Nkula substation where an IEC 61850 based solution was a requirement. The need for interoperability in Substation Automation systems (SAS) raised the need for standardization of communications in substations, especially communication between different manufacturer intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) at substation level. The main aim presented in this paper, is to share the programming, implementation, testing and commissioning steps taken to develop an IEC 61850 based SAS solution for Nkula Substation. Also, to share the process taken to achieve a fully functional SAS for NKULA Substation utilizing IEC 61850 standard. The SAS which was developed for this project provided the following: Protection, control and monitoring of a 66/33/11kV transformer bay at Nkula-B substation. ; Protection, control and monitoring of a 33k V incomer and four 33kV feeders in Nkula-A. ; control and monitoring of the substation from control centre over IEC 62870-5-104 ; Ring communication network within the substation using optical fibre with parallel redundancy protocol. ; Human-Machine Interface (HMI) ; all equipment deliverables for the complete solution as per requirement.

A neural network (NN) controller using the reinforcement learning method for ATM traffic policing is presented. The mechanism is based upon an accurate estimation of the probability density function (pdf) of the traffic via its count process and the design of a NN critic function capable of evaluating the system performance in terms of the pdf violation. The pdf-based policing is made possible only by NNs. This is due to the fact that pdf policing requires complex calculations, in real-time, at very high rates which is not feasible via conventional mathematical approaches. The architecture of the NN policing mechanism is composed of critic function and control function. The critic function uses two inter-connected NNs. The first NN is trained to learn the pdf of "ideal non-violating" traffic, whereas the second NN is trained to capture the "actual" characteristics of the "actual" offered traffic during the progress of the call. The output of both NNs is compared. Consequently, an error signal is generated whenever the pdf of the offered traffic violates its "ideal" case. The error signal is, then, used by the critic function to produce an evaluation signal based upon a certain performance measure. A reinforcement learning method uses the evaluation signal to adjust the weights of a third NN, in the control function that generates a control signal capable of maximizing the system performance. The reported results prove that the present policing mechanism is very effective in detecting (and controlling) all possible kinds of traffic violations.< >
