We have developed a novel dispersion-reduction technique using subcarrier multiplexing which permits the transmission of multiple 2.5 Gbit/s data channels over hundreds of kilometers of conventional fiber-optic cable with negligible dispersion. Using a lithium niobate external modulator having a modulation bandwidth of 20 GHz, we are able to multiplex several high-speed data channels at a single wavelength. At the receiving end, we demultiplex the data and detect each channel using a 2-GHz bandwidth optical detector. all of the hardware in our system consists of off-the-shelf components and can be integrated to reduce the overall cost. We demonstrated our dispersion-reduction technique in a recent field trial by transmitting two 2.5 Gbit/s data channels over 90 km of commercially-installed single-mode fiber, followed by 210 km of spooled fiber. For comparison, we substituted the 300 km of fiber with equivalent optical attenuation. We also ran computer simulations to evaluate link behavior. Technical details and field trial results will be presented.

With the increased degree of miniaturization resulting from the use of modem VLSI technology and the high communication bandwidth available through optical connections, it is now possible to build massively parallel computers based on distributed modules which can be embedded in advanced industrial products. Examples of such future possibilities are ''action-oriented systems'', in which a network of highly parallel modules perform a multitude of tasks related to perception, cognition, and action. The paper discusses questions of architecture on the level of modules and inter-module communication and gives concrete architectural solutions which meet the demands of typical, advanced industrial real-time applications. The interface between the processors arrays and the all-optical communication network is described in some detail. Implementation issues specifically related to the demand for miniaturization are discussed.

This paper presents different architectures for high split, wide range bidirectional *** of the ways to achieve such SuperPONs is by the introduction of erbium- doped-fiber-amplifiers or semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) in order to overcome the strongly increased power budgets in comparison to conventional PONs. This will however present new challenges in overcoming the 'noise- funneling' effect caused by the parallel amplifiers. Four different approaches are studied: 1) using of on/off switchable semiconductor optical amplifiers, 2) using parallel erbium-doped-fiber amplifiers, 3) using electro- optic regeneration, and 4) using conventional SDH, ATM and APON technology. A description is given of each architecture, including advantages and drawbacks. These architectures serve as input to further studies performed by the ACTS-PLANET consortium. The power-budget studies showed that it is technically feasible to develop a SuperPON with a 2048 split and a 70-100 km range.

First-order crosstalk in Multistage Interconnection networks (MINs) can be avoided by ensuring only one input of each switch is active at a given time, in other words, no two connections can use the same switch simultaneously. A space domain approach dilates an N-by-N network into one that is essentially equivalent to a 2N-by-2N network [1]. The time domain approach proposed in [2] extends the "dilation" concept from space to time to avoid crosstalk by establishing the connections sharing the same switch in different time slots. This paper studies the tradeoffs of these two approaches in two different MINs, namely, Banyan and Benes, under both individual and stage switch control. Theoretical analysis showed that in a Banyan with stage control, the set of N-by-N permutations whose connections can be established crosstalk free in two time slots using the time domain approach is more than the set of permutations that can be realized in one time slot using the space domain approach. In addition, simulation results showed that given the same set of one-to-one or one-to-many connections, the number of time slots needed by the time-domain approach is less than twice of that needed by the space-domain approach. © 1995 SPIE.

Wide area all-optical networks are emerging as practical and future-proof solution to the enormous bandwidth requirements of today's end-users. Over the past few years, the field of all-optical networks has experienced tremendous amount of research, development, and prototyping activities. control and management issues of all-optical networks, which are getting increasing attention in the research and development communities, are considered in this paper. We present a new approach for modeling call blocking probability in wavelength-routed wide-area all-optical networks. When an optical connection (lightpath) request arrives at a node, first a route and a wavelength along that route is selected to establish the requested connection. If an available route or wavelength doesn't exist then the connection is blocked at the source node. If a route and an available wavelength along that route are found then the wavelength along the different links of the route are reserved as soon as possible. However, reserving the selected wavelength on all the links of the route takes finite amount of time which is dependent on the propagation delays of the links and processing speeds of the nodes along the route. Hence, the selected wavelength on one or more of the links along the route might be reserved by another lightpath request while the set-up procedure of the previous one is in progress. One of the primary goal of this work is to study blocking of lightpath requests at intermediate nodes. Note that, although several researchers have studied blocking at source node in optical networks [1,2,3], to our knowledge blocking characteristic at intermediate nodes has not been studied earlier. A new lightpath set-up approach is also proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed approach can reduce blocking at intermediate nodes. Numerical results from analytical as well as simulation models are presented for various network configurations.

By means of numerical simulation, we investigate the implementation of duobinary coding at 20 Gbit/s transmission over standard singlemode fiber and compare its performance with the performance of binary coding. Two system configurations are compared: duobinary coding implemented at the transmitter (DIT configuration) and duobinary coding implemented at the receiver (DIR configuration). Numerical results reveal that duobinary coding is much less impaired by fiber transmission than binary coding. However, the binary back-to-back receiver sensitivity can be as much as 9 dB better than the DIT configuration if a high-gain preamplifier is considered. The DIR configuration achieves an improvement of about 2-3 dB in the back-to-back receiver sensitivity because of the smaller noise bandwidth. It is shown that the DIT and DIR configurations exhibit similar dispersion penalty. Nevertheless, the DIR configuration achieves an improvement of about 2-3 dB in the back-to-back sensitivity because of the smaller receiver noise bandwidth.

We describe an all-optical network testbed deployed in the Boston metropolitan area, and some of the experimental applications running over the network. The network was developed by a consortium of AT&T Bell Laboratories, Digital Equipment Corporation, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology under a grant from ARPA. The network is an optical WDM system organized as a hierarchy consisting of local, metropolitan, and wide area nodes that support optical broadcast and routing modes. Frequencies are shared and reused to enhance network scalability. Electronic access is provided through optical terminals that support multiple services having data rates between 10 Mbps/user and 10 Gbps/user. Novel components used to implement the network include fast-tuning 1.5 micrometers distributed Bragg reflector lasers, passive wavelength routers, and broadband optical frequency converters. An overlay control network implemented at 1.3 micrometers allows reliable out-of-band control and standardized network management of all network nodes. We have created interfaces between the AON and commercially available electronic circuit-switched and packet-switched networks. We will report on network applications that can dynamically allocate optical bandwidth between electronic packet-switches based on the offered load presented by users, without requiring interfaces between users and the AON control system. We will also describe video and telemedicine applications running over the network. We have demonstrated an audio/video codec that is directly interfaced to the optical network, and is capable of transmitting high-rate digitized video signals for broadcast or videoconferencing applications. We have also demonstrated a state-of-the-art radiological workstation that uses the AON to transport 2000 X 2000 X 16 bit images from a remote image server.

By providing several parallel high-capacity channels in the same fiber, WDM technology is commonly considered to be one of the fundamental solutions for future high speed computer networks. By means of WDM the potential THz bandwidth of the optical fiber can be multiplexed into channels with transmission speed compatible with opto/electronic and electro/optic converters - e.g., transmitters and receivers. However, a fundamental scalability problem has to be solved in order to build larger than LAN size WDM packet switched all-optical networks. Current solutions can not be scaled by simply adding nodes to the existing system due to the limited number of wavelengths and/or the available power budget. The lack of modular solutions, similar to those used in traditional electronic networks, can be attributed to the unavailability of optical technology that can support switching of WDM channels on a per packet basis. Recently, a novel approach was proposed to obtain a packet switching WDM network which is scalable in coverage area, size and number of wavelengths. The approach is based on the combination of two ideas - use of a backbone that connects (bridges) multiple LAN segments, where bridging is done using the new concept of Photonic Slot Routing (PSR). In this concept, packets transmitted simultaneously on the WDM channels in any ''photonic'' slot are switched jointly in the bridge between the LAN segments and the backbone. Thus packets in a given slot remain transmitted on the same path, from their source LAN to the destination LAN and consequently, the bridge is only required to handle complete slots, i.e., all WDM channels jointly. The aim of this work is to present the first analytical model developed to evaluate the performance of the photonic slot concept applied to a single fiber ring backbone system, independently on the interconnected LAN segment topologies, e.g, ring, folded bus, star.

Laser phase noise conversion to intensity noise due to fiber dispersion may impose severe degradation in intensity modulation and direct detection (IM-DD) system performance. In this paper, we investigate theoretically and numerically the influence of fiber nonlinearity on the conversion of phase noise to intensity noise at fiber output. Excellent agreement of noise characteristics between simulations results obtained from an accurate solution of the noise driven laser rate equations and theoretical predictions has been achieved. Results reveal that due to the fiber nonlinearity a significant enhancement of magnitude of the relative intensity noise (RIN) spectrum as well as its broadening is observed in the anomalous dispersion regime while a magnitude reduction and narrowing of the spectrum is observed in the normal regime. The system penalty due to RIN at the fiber output in IM-DD transmission systems using external modulator is assessed, The maximum transmission distance imposed by RIN for 1dB of power penalty is presented for various optical power at fiber input in gigabit-per-second transmission systems. It is shown that in the anomalous dispersion regime the RIN enhancement due to the fiber nonlinearity can impose a significant impairment in IM-DD transmission systems through the phase modulation to IM conversion enhancement.

In the first quarter of this year, the optical communications industry?s major event, OFCNFOEC ?13, was held in Anaheim, California, with global participation (in excess of 12,000 attendees) in the conference?s technical program and exhibit (more than 550 exhibiting companies). More than 800 technical presentations covered a broad range of optical communications technologies from advances in high-speed optical transport, software-defined networking (SDN), silicon photonics to optical interconnects in future computing systems, as well as progress in optical test and measurement.
