SUDOI: Software Defined networking for Ubiquitous Data Center optical Interconnection

Ubiquitous data center optical interconnection is a promising scenario to meet the high burstiness and high-bandwidth requirements of services in terms of the user-access-oriented interconnection between user and data center, inter-data-center, and intra-data-center interconnection. However, in the current mode of operation, the control of the data center and optical network is separately deployed. Enabling even limited interworking among these separated control systems does not provide a mechanism to exchange resource information and enhance the high-level performance requirement of applications. Our previous work implemented cross-stratum optimization of optical network and application strata resources inter-data-center, which allows the accommodation of data center services. In view of this, this study extends to the ubiquitous data center optical interconnection scenario. This article presents a novel SUDOI architecture aimed at extensive user access from the perspective of heterogeneous cross-stratum and multi-layer networking modes. SUDOI can enable cross-stratum optimization of application and optical network stratum resources, and enhance multiple-layer resource integration in the ubiquitous data center optical interconnection. The functional modules of SUDOI architecture, including the core elements of various controllers, are described in detail. The cooperation procedure in user-access-oriented interconnection, multiple-layer resource integration inter-data-center, and intra-data-center service modes is investigated. The feasibility and efficiency of the proposed architecture are also experimentally demonstrated on our OaaS testbed with OpenFlow-enabled optical nodes, and compared to the CSO scheme in terms of blocking probability and resource occupation rate. Numerical results are given and analyzed based on the testbed. Some future discussion and exploration issues are presented in the conclusion.

Beyond-3G (B3G) systems have been envisaged as an evolution and convpartial derivativeergence of mobile/wireless communication systems and IP technologies to offer a multitude of services over a variety of access technologies. To fulfill the vision, it is necessary to understand the requirements with respect to the support of heterogeneity in network accesses, communication services, mobility, user devices, and so on. Besides, it is equally important to promote the necessary research in networking technology by providing a guiding framework of research areas and technical issues with priority. The new architectures and technologies will have to address the fundamental assumptions and requirements that govern the design. all these issues are being tackled by the Cooperative network working group (CoNet) of WWRF;the group is working on a series of white papers outlining B3G visions and roadmap, architectural principles, research challenges, and candidate approaches. This article outlines the CoNet concept, architectural principles, and guidelines for research into cooperative networks assuming that the B3G systems will be built over generic IP networking technologies. The article also presents the key research challenges, research framework, and major network components and technologies. The key points are that the system should be layered on demand, encourage reuse of independent modularized functional blocks, support multiple services and service creation, ensure consistent end-to-end connectivity across different access technologies, and cooperate in terms of network control, operations, and maintenance. The architecture shall include the endpoints of communications as part of the communications system, and should provide a secure and trusted environment in which network functions are performed;the network should self-organize dynamically. A minimal redundant shared OLT protection for hybrid WDM-TDM optical access networks

In this paper, a hybrid WDM-TDM-based optical access network architecture has been proposed that aims to provide optical line terminal (OLT) protection and partial feeder fiber protection without using any or minimal redundant OLT or any separate protection feeder fiber. The architecture is termed as minimal redundant shared OLT protection (MRSO) architecture. MRSO provides load shared OLT protection, where the ONUs of the failed OLT are supported by either another operational OLT that is lightly loaded in times of failure or by a redundant OLT located somewhere in the network. An appropriate control mechanism to enable communication among the mutually supporting OLTs has also been introduced. The control protocol enables distributed failure detection, updating of traffic load condition, and failure recovery. In MRSO, the remote node of the failed OLT can determine the node (OLT) that can take over the services along with the associated protection path depending on the current load condition. The paper further presents a new procedure for calculating availability of service for providing shared OLT protection. The availability of network service per end user subject to different failure scenarios within the proposed network architecture has been explored. Finally, our cost and scalability comparison shows that the proposed architecture provides significant cost and scalability benefit over previously proposed OLT protection schemes while achieving higher levels of network availability.

optical quorum cycles for efficient communication

Many optical networks face heterogeneous communication requests requiring topologies to be efficient and fault tolerant. For efficiency and distributed control, it is common in distributed systems and algorithms to group nodes into intersecting sets referred to as quorum sets. We show efficiency and distributed control can also be accomplished in optical network routing by applying the same established quorum set theory. Cycle-based optical network routing, whether using SONET rings or p-cycles, provides the sufficient reliability in the network. Light-trails forming a cycle allow broadcasts within a cycle to be used for efficient multicasts. Cyclic quorum sets also have all pairs of nodes occurring in one or more quorums, so efficient, arbitrary unicast communication can occur between any two nodes. Efficient broadcasts to all network nodes are possible by a node broadcasting to all quorum cycles to which it belongs (O(root N)). In this paper, we propose applying the distributed efficiency of the quorum sets to routing optical cycles based on light-trails. With this new method of topology construction, unicast and multicast communication requests do not need to be known or even modeled a priori. Additionally, in the presence of network link faults, greater than 99 % average coverage enables the continued operation of nearly all arbitrary unicast and multicast requests in the network. Finally, to further improve the fault coverage, an augmentation to the ECBRA cycle finding algorithm is proposed.

Flexible architecture and Autonomous control Plane for Metro-Scale Geographically Distributed Data Centers

Enterprises and cloud providers are moving away from deployment of large-scale data centers and towards smallto mid-sized data centers because of their lower implementation and maintenance costs. An optical metro network is used to provide connectivity among these data centers. The optical network requires flexibility on bandwidth allocation and various levels of Quality of Service to support the new emerging applications and services including the ones enabled by 5G. As a result, next generation optical metro networks face complex control and management issues that needs to be resolved with automation. We present a converged inter/intra data center network architecture with an autonomous control plane for flexible bandwidth allocation. The architecture supports both single-rate and multi-rate data planes with two types of physical layer connections (Background and Dynamic) that provide connections with strict bandwidth and latency requirements. We demonstrate autonomous bandwidth steering between two data centers on our prototype. Leveraging a simulation platform, we show up to 5x lower transmission times and 25% less spectrum usage compared with the single-rate conventional non-converged networks. This is a significant improvement in the data center network performance and energy efficiency.

To enable the SuperPON systems developed within the ACTS-PLANET (Photonic Local Access network) project to meet the availability targets;of the offered services redundant elements are provided to give protection in the event of failures, Using extensive reliability data a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) based SuperPON architecture is' evaluated in terms of availability. An amount of redundancy (mainly of optical amplifiers and of cable plant) is required to provide, the availability for the system to support telephony in addition to the broadband service basket. Cable cut is seen to be a dominant factor. The telephony availability requirement can be achieved for the Fibre To The Home (FTTH) scenario with redundancy most importantly in the first distribution section and in the amplified splitter. The possible use of dual homing to counter catastrophic failures and the issues surrounding protection switching are also discussed.

Broadband networks to support a diverse combination of media and services present two interrelated challenges to the designers: how to devise the proper network architectures to efficiently deliver information, and how to realize the control and software infrastructure for end-to-end support of broadband applications. The new networks and applications that represent the future of interactive digital broadband are not driven by technology alone. We should recognize that the true foundation of the future information networking business involves the uses and benefits that it produces. The applications that are driving the information age are numerous, coming from the areas of entertainment, enterprise systems, telecommunications, education, health, etc. The use of client-server distributed object computing technologies is at the foundation of all the software systems that have been designed and implemented. There are still many issues to he resolved in the application of this software technology, but it is clear that we must rely on distributed software designs to support the features of interactive broadband services. Concerns over the ability to manage complexity and scalability in these large distributed software systems are a common thread and an indication that the technology still needs to mature.< >

We describe a WDM-based optical access network architecture for providing broadband Internet services. The architecture uses a passive collection and distribution network and a configurable Feeder network. Unlike earlier papers that concentrate on the physical layer design of the network, we focus on higher layer architectural considerations. In particular we discuss the joint design of the electronic and optical layers including: WDM Medium Access control protocols;the choice of electronic multiplexing and switching between the IP and WDM layers;joint optical and electronic protection mechanisms;network reconfiguration algorithms that alter the logical topology of the network in response to changes in traffic;and traffic grooming algorithms to minimize the cost of electronic multiplexing.

The paper discusses the shortcomings of the current day networks in transporting exponentially increasing data traffic. Bursty & unpredictable characteristics of data traffic would need thorough overhauling, of existing networks. An all optical network architecture is envisaged for the future with electrical elements only in the access feeds. Various issues, techniques and architecture are discussed: The futuristic network is foreseen as: an all optical, data centric one with mesh-ring-mesh topology, implementing QoS and distributed intelligence & management.

Photonic packet switches offer high speed, data late and format transparency, and flexibility required by future computer communications and cell-based telecommunications networks. In this paper, we review experimental progress in state-of-the-art photonic packet switches with an emphasis on all-optical guided-wave systems. The term all-optical implies that the data portion of a packet remains in optical format from the source to the destination. While the data remain all-optical, both optical and optoelectronic techniques have been used to process packet routing functions based on extremely simple routing protocols. An overview of the design issues for all-optical photonic packet switching is given and contrasted with electronic packet switch implementations. Low-level functions that have been experimentally implemented include routing, contention resolution, synchronization, and header regeneration. System level demonstrations, including centralized photonic switching and distributed all-optical multihop networks, will be reviewed.
