The traffic carried by core optical networks grows at a steady but remarkable pace of 30-40% year-over-year. optical transmissions and networking advancements continue to satisfy the traffic requirements by delivering the content over the network infrastructure in a cost and energy efficient manner. Such core optical networks serve the information traffic demands in a dynamic way, in response to requirements for shifting of traffics demands, both temporally (day/night) and spatially (business district/residential). However as we are approaching fundamental spectral efficiency limits of singlemode fibers, the scientific community is pursuing recently the development of an innovative, all-optical network architecture introducing the spatial degree of freedom when designing/operating future transport networks. Spacedivision-multiplexing through the use of bundled single mode fibers, and/or multi-core fibers and/or few-mode fibers can offer up to 100-fold capacity increase in future optical networks. The EU INSPACE project is working on the development of a complete spatial-spectral flexible optical networking solution, offering the network ultra-high capacity, flexibility and energy efficiency required to meet the challenges of delivering exponentially growing traffic demands in the internet over the next twenty years. In this paper we will present the motivation and main research activities of the INSPACE consortium towards the realization of the overall project solution.

The security has always been an important part of the telecommunication systems, which require consideration with high priority and appropriate countermeasures by network operators. In avionics communication systems the consideration of security is even more important, provided the fact that a minor security breach in avionics communication system can lead to a catastrophic incident which is never acceptable in any circumstances. Like other terrestrial networks the evolution of avionics communication networks is also incorporating new technologies such as heterogeneous networking for multilink communications, software defined radios (SDR), IoT, Cloud, Big Data and software defined networking (SDN) etc. This evolution for future avionics communication networks on one hand is offering enhanced reliability, flexibility, improved performance, centralized control, global network view and better management to the future avionics networks but on other hand it also inherits some of the vulnerabilities such as single point of failure etc. The pre-existing vulnerabilities together with newly inherited vulnerabilities due to incorporation of new technologies in future avionics communications networks demands considerable attention and develop context for more research in this area. There have been multiple artificial intelligence (AI) based techniques proposed by researcher globally to counter the security challenges associated with traditional terrestrial networks but very rare efforts have been made in securing future avionics communication incorporating AI. This paper proposes an AI based security solution using artificial neural networks (ANN) to address the security issues of future avionics communications networks. This paper identifies the possible vulnerabilities in the SDN enabled future avionics network (COMET) architecture at different levels considering southbound, northbound and east/west bound interfaces. Chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and nonlinear effects are important issues on the physical layer of high-speed reconfigurable WDM optical fiber communication systems. For beyond 10 Gbit/s optical fiber transmission system, it is essential that chromatic dispersion and PMD be well managed by dispersion monitoring and compensation. One the other hand, dispersive and nonlinear effects in optical fiber systems can also be beneficial and has applications on pulse management, all-optical signal processing and network function, which will be essential for high bite-rate optical networks and replacing the expensive optical-electrical-optical (O/E/O) conversion. In this Ph.D. dissertation, we present a detailed research on dispersive and nonlinear effects in high-speed optical communication systems. We have demonstrated: (i) A novel technique for optically compensating the PMD-induced RF power fading that occurs in single-sideband (SSB) subcarrier-multiplexed systems. By aligning the polarization states of the optical carrier and the SSB, RF power fading due to all orders of PMD can be completely compensated. (ii) Chromatic-dispersion-insensitive PMD monitoring by using a narrowband FBG notch filter to recover the RF clock power for 10Gb/s NRZ data, and apply it as a control signal for PMD compensation. (iii) Chirp-free high-speed optical pulse generation with a repetition rate of 160 GHz (which is four times of the frequency of the electrical clock) using a phase modulator and polarization maintaining (PM) fiber. (iv) Polarization-insensitive all-optical wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing in dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF) with a fiber Bragg grating and a Faraday rotator mirror. (v) Width-tunable optical RZ pulse train generation based on four-wave mixing in highly-nonlinear fiber. Novel network architecture and key device technology are described for next-generation photonic networks enabling high-performance data communications. To accomplish full-mesh links for efficient data transportation, time-shared wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) is the most promising under the limitation imposed on the total wavelength number available at network nodes. optical add/drop I multiplexing (OADM) using wavelength-tunable devices is essential for temporal data link formation. Wavelength management based on absolute wavelength calibration is a key to OADM operations. A simple wavelength discriminating device using a disk-shaped tunable optical bandpass filter under the synchro-scanned operation is useful for managing the laser wavelengths. High-speed data transmissions of >40Gbps necessary for efficient operation of the networks are also described. A key is photonic downconversion which enables phase detection for optical data streams at above the electrical limitation of around 50 GHz. This technique is applied not only to a phase-locked loop for synchronizing mode-locked pulses to an electrical signal in the much lower frequency range of around 10 GHz, but to timing extraction from 100-Gbps data streams.

Natural Language Generation (NLG) task is to generate natural language utterances from structured data. Seq2seq-based systems show great potentiality and have been widely explored for NLG. While they achieve good generation performance, over-generation and under-generation issues still arise in the generated results. We propose maintaining a masked hard coverage mechanism in the pointer-generator network, a seq2seq-based architecture that trains a switch policy to produce output sequences by partially copying from input structured data. The proposed mechanism can be regarded as the inner controlling module to keep track of the copying history and force the network to generate sentences accurately covering all information provided in structured data. Experimental results show that our coverage mechanism alleviates the over-generation and under-generation issues and achieves decent performance on the E2E NLG dataset.

The work provides a general model of communication attacks on a networked infinite dimensional system. The system employs a network of inexpensive control units consisting of actuators, sensors and control processors. In an effort to replace a reduced number of expensive high-end actuating and sensing devices implementing an observer-based feedback, the alternate is to use multiple inexpensive actuators/sensors with static output feedback. In order to emulate the performance of the high-end devices, the controllers for the multiple actuator/sensors implement controllers which render the system networked. In doing so, they become prone to communication attacks either as accidental or deliberate actions on the connectivity of the control nodes. A single attack function is proposed which models all types of communication attacks and an adaptive detection scheme is proposed in order to (i) detect the presence of an attack, (ii) diagnose the attack and (iii) accommodate the attack via an appropriate control reconfiguration. The reconfiguration employs the adaptive estimates of the controller gains and restructure the controller adaptively in order to minimize the detrimental effects of the attack on closed-loop performance. Numerical studies on a 1D diffusion PDE employing networked actuator/sensor pairs are included in order to further convey the special architecture of detection and accommodation of networked systems under communication attacks.

network monitoring is one of the key aspects to ensure communication reliability in case of failures and malicious activities and has several design issues depending on the system characteristics. As traditional monitoring solutions usually rely on periodic updates between the network controller and ordinary nodes, scalability remains a challenge, especially for complex systems. A recent solution, the In-Band network Telemetry (INT) framework, allows data packets to probe the nodes while traversing the network reducing the overhead between the controller and other nodes. Accordingly, effective use of the INT framework is now a design problem to (i) minimize the control overhead, (ii) guarantee the freshness of telemetry information, and (iii) minimize redundancy. In this paper, we propose a heuristic, Graph Partitioned INT (GPINT), to find balanced paths to forward in-band telemetry information to satisfy these three requirements. We present an extensive analysis of our approach and compare it with a recent study that uses Euler's method for path generation. Our numerical results show that GPINT outperforms its opponent in terms of all three requirements.

We are truly in the midst of the "Information Age". communications equipment range from devices that fit in your pocket to equipment that brings interactive television viewing and the internet to your living room. Market forces on these communication devices are demanding indeed. all communications equipment must be interoperable. Multi-protocol support is required for interoperability with different networks or even different equipment on the same network. Minimizing the ROM and RAM footprint of the devices is essential in order to compete in the marketplace. CPU utilization due to the network protocol stacks must be kept to a minimum, both to allow the lowest cost CPU as well as to maximize CPU availability for multimedia applications. Many of these market forces seem to compete with each other. As we look at various software architecture approaches for these devices, we will uncover inefficiencies and options that create cost, performance, and footprint tradeoffs to the equipment manufacturer. The goal of this paper is to functionally specify a software environment to support the network interface requirements of a networked embedded system. First, the general characteristics of a networked embedded system will be defined. From these characteristics, requirements of a networked embedded system will be identified and potential approaches will be outlined. The potential approaches will then be examined with respect to the tradeoffs to be made in order to fulfill the requirements.
