Taping machines, chip mounters and surface mount device (SMD) inspection systems use imageprocessing techniques for the positioning of SMDs. The improvement of the production quality as well as the productivity is strongly requested in these systems. The imageprocessing system in these systems have inspection functions to improve production quality. Generally, images of the part being picked up by the nozzle are acquired in a horizontal direction, and pickup errors are detected by processing these images. The aim of this paper is to develop a system for detecting pickup errors by processingimages of parts acquired from the bottom. By using our proposed method, the detection rate of pickup errors is 99.3%.

Non-negative sparse coding (NSC) is a powerful technique for low-rank data approximation, and has found several successful applications in signal processing. However, the temporal dependency, which is a vital clue for many realistic signals, has not been taken into account in its conventional model. In this paper, we propose a general framework, i.e., convolutive non-negative sparse coding (CNSC), by considering a convolutive model for the low-rank approximation of the original data. Using this model, we have developed an effective learning algorithm based on the multiplicative adaptation of the reconstruction err-or function defined by the squared Euclidean distance. The proposed algorithm is applied to the separation of music audio objects in the magnitude spectrum domain. Interesting numerical results are provided to demonstrate its advantages over both the conventional NSC and an existing convolutive coding method.

factorization and tuning techniques for space-time adaptive process (STAP) Algorithm Implementation on Graphics
Processor unit (GPU) Architectures for Embedded Systems.
The first part of our presentation on the DARPA STAP-BOY program will focus on GPU implementation and
algorithm innovations for a prototype radar STAP algorithm. The STAP algorithm will be implemented on the
GPU, using stream programming (from companies such as PeakStream, ATI Technologies' CTM, and NVIDIA)
and traditional graphics APIs. This algorithm will include fast range adaptive STAP weight updates and
beamforming applications, each of which has been modified to exploit the parallel nature of graphics architectures.

Emerging capabilities in stream and multi-core computation, along with high speed memory bandwidths in
commercial GPU architectures, are enabling breakthrough low-cost and low-power teraflop computing solutions to
DoD-embedded computing challenges. Under the DARPA MTO STAP-BOY program, SAIC and Duke University,
in cooperation with commercial graphics processor companies, have been mapping complex signal processing
algorithms to GPU architectures. Algorithms undergoing implementation include STAP applications for radar
adaptive beamforming and spin-image surface matching applications for object recognition in 3-D range-image
data.

Several applications would emerge from the development of artificial systems able to accurately localize and identify sound sources. This paper proposes an integrated sound localization and classification system based on the human auditory system and a respective compact hardware implementation. The proposed models are based on spiking neurons, which are suitable for processing time series data, like sound signals, and can be easily implemented in hardware. The system uses two microphones, extracting the time difference between the two channels with a chain of coincidence detection spiking neurons. A spiking neuralnetworks process the time-delay pattern, giving a single directional output. Simultaneously, an independent spiking neural network process the spectral information of on audio channel in order to classify the source. Experimental results show that a the proposed system could successfully locate and identify several sound sources in real time with high accuracy.

The architecture of the multiplicative typc-ii Fuzzy Cellular neuralnetworks (FCNN) with CMOS image sensor is implemented, which is with local connectivity advantageous suitable implemented for VLSI. Base on the proposed FCNN structure which is included the neuron, Min/Max, analog multiplier, pixel and CDS circuit, S/H Circuit, transfer and control circuits. The system has capability to operate the various morphological operations for binary and gray-level image, such as Dilation and Erosion. The simulation results show that the FCNN can operated the specific functions depend on the selected template is successfully verified by the TSMC 0.35 mu m 2P4M CMOS technology. There have a great potential in the VLSI implementation of neural network systems for binary and gray-level patterns in image-processingapplications.

Inspired by the behaviour of the human visual system, a spiking neural network is proposed to detect moving objects in a visual image sequence. The structure and the properties of the network are detailed in this paper. Simulation results show that the network is able to perform motion detection for dynamic visual image sequence. Boundaries of moving objects are extracted from an active neuron group. Using the boundary, a moving object filter is created to take the moving objects from the grey image. The moving object images can be used to recognise moving objects. The moving tracks can be recorded for further analysis of behaviours of moving objects. It is promising to apply this approach to video processing domain and robotic visual systems.
