A new curvelet-based watermarking technique is presented in this paper, in which watermark signals are selected to be a gray-scale logo image. The curvelet transform was developed in order to represent edges along curves much more efficiently than the traditional transforms. We apply the transform to watermarking and evaluate the effectiveness of the method. Our watermarking algorithm embeds a watermark in curvelet coefficients which are selected by a criterion whether they contain as much edge information as possible. We evaluated the effectiveness of the method against some watermark attacks. Experiment results show that our new method yields quite good visual quality in watermarked images, and is robust to typical signal processing attacks such as compression, cropping, adding noise and filtering.

This paper describes features and the feature extraction processing which were applied for recognising gestures by artificialneuralnetworks. The features were applied for two cases: time series of luminance rate images for hand gestures and time series of pure grey-scale images of the facial mouth region. A focus will be on the presentation and discussion of the application of 2- dimensional Fourier transformed images both for luminance rate feature maps of hand gestures and for greyscale images of the facial mouth region. Appearancebased features in this context are understood as features based on whole images, which perform well for highly articulated objects. The described approach was used based on our assumption that highly articulated objects are of great interest for musical applications.

(C) 2007 SPIE and IS&T.A technique adopted from the neural network field is presented for performing image segmentation based on the winner-take-all (WTA) scheme implemented with an optoelectronic architecture. This combination allows the parallel nature of optics and the computational strengths of electronics to model a fast and efficient image segmentation system. A model of an architecture for a large array of optoelectronic feedback circuits that can be realized using new technology to perform image segmentation using the WTA scheme is proposed. The architecture is modeled optoelectronically as an interferometer with a simple non-linearity for the control unit. Results from numerical analysis and simulations show the model can generate WTA behavior Results from simulations are shown with sample images used to test the model's ability to perform segmentation. This paper presents a new approach to model face images using the state space feature parameters. We present a novel feature extraction method for the recognition of face images based on their grayscale images eliminating any step of pre-processing. Experiments are performed using the standard AT & T (formerly, ORL face database) face database containing 400 face images of 40 different individuals. The sate space map and state space point distribution graph drawn for 400 individuals' face image shows the credibility of the method. To show the nonlinear nature of the face images the fractal dimension is also computed from the sate space map of the each face image using the box count method. In the recognition stage we used artificialneural network classifier, and the proposed SSPD feature is found to be promising, and this is the first attempt of this kind in the field of face recognition.

Signal processing circuits are very useful elements in fuzzy logic, artificialneural network, and image application. In imageprocessing, median filter is adopted to remove pulse noise. In the paper, a real-time CMOS analog median circuit is proposed. Based on current-mirror, current comparison, and some digital logics, a new analog median filter with high-speed low chip area is achieved. By using TSMC 0.35 μm CMOS technology, the median filter provides a 0.4-μA discriminability and well tracked the median value among input currents. In addition, the median filter cell can be expanded to have signal level 'sort' capability.

In this paper, we propose the combination of the self organizing map (SOM) and of the tangent distance for effective clustering in document image analysis. The proposed model (SOM_TD) is used for character and layout clustering, with applications to word retrieval and to page classification. By using the tangent distance it is possible to improve the SOM clustering so as to be more tolerant with respect to small local transformations of the input patterns.
