This paper describes a technique to ghosts cancellation without a Ghost Cancellation Reference signal. The existing vertical edges in TV image are used to estimate the channel characteristics. With the estimating results, the coefficients of the equalizer are updated. In this paper, a method to speed up the convergence is given. The equalizer structure for cancelling all kinds of ghosts is discussed too. A new improved solution is achieved by interpreting the TV synchronisation signal as a genuine edge.

This paper presents a technique for deblurring noisy images. It includes two processing blocks, one for denoising and another for blind image restoration. The denoising step is based on the theories of singular value decomposition and compression-based filtering. The deblurring step is based on a double-regularization technique. Experimental results show that the combination of these techniques is quite effective in restoring severely blurred and noise-corrupted images, without prior knowledge of either the noise or image characteristics.

We present in this paper the realization of a classification board, for real-time image segmentation. The classification of each pixel is completed using a real time extraction of attributs and a geometric classification method by stress polytope training, which ensures a high decision speed (100 ns per pixels) and good performances. The decision operator has been integrated in the form of a full custom circuit, and the extraction of parameters is performed using a single high density FPGA.

This paper describes new feature extraction methods which can be used very effectively in combination with statistical methods for image sequence recognition. Although these feature extraction methods can be used for a wide variety of image sequence processingapplications, the target application presented in this paper is gesture recognition. The novel feature extraction methods have been integrated into an HMM-based gesture recognition system and led to substantial improvements for this system. It turned out that the new features are not only able to describe the gesture characteristics much better than the old features, but additionally they also led to a dramatic reduction in dimensionality of the feature vector used for representing each frame of the image sequence. This resulted in the fact that it was possible to use the novel features in Combination with a new architecture for statistical image sequence recognition. The result of this investigation is a high performance gesture recognition system with significantly improved recognition rates and real-time capabilities.

In this paper a method that facilitates an iconic query of an image/video database is presented. A query object is characterised by colour and texture properties. The same characteristics are computed locally far the database images. A statistical decision rule is then used to test for similarity between the iconically specified query and the database image descriptors. We show that by carefully selecting the set of descriptors the false alarm rate can be significantly reduced. The floating search feature selection method has been adapted to make it applicable to the hypothesis testing based query processing. The dimensionality reduction not only improves the performance but also enhances the computational efficiency of the method.

Robustness as well as the ability to work in an unsupervised mode are two desirable features of algorithms employed on large image databases. This paper describes parameter optimization strategies for such algorithms and motivates these strategies by focussing on aerial image exploitation and studying certain specific aerial image understanding algorithms, namely local vehicle detection and global vehicle configuration detection. The paper first gives a brief introduction to the problem in the context of aerial imagery. Next, a high level description of the algorithms and parameters that need to be optimized is given. Strategies for parameter optimization are illustrated using examples. Finally a discussion on the applicability and scope for improvement of the strategies is given.

We propose a new method for reduction of these coding artifacts based on spatially adaptive constrained least squares restoration. The proposal is numerically simple and yields visually convincing results for intra as well as inter coded images. We present an efficient method for segmenting colour-images, which may be utilised in several robotic vision tasks. It categorises pixels according to their perceptual colour by exploiting the chromaticity contained in the signal of a standard colour camera as an index into a pre-clustered chromaticity plane. A technique called perceptual colour grouping is introduced to prevent oversegmentation. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia associated with many heart diseases and has a high rate of incidence in the older population. Many of the symptoms of AF are poorly tolerated by patients and if not properly managed, may lead to fatal conditions like embolic stroke. The atrial electrograms during AF show a high degree of non-stationarity AF being progressive in nature, we aim to link the the degree of non-stationarity of the atrial electrogram to the stage of advancement of the disease, the duration of episodes of AF, possibility of spontaneous reversion to sinus rhythm and the defibrillation energy requirement. In this paper we describe a novel algorithm for classifying bipolar electrograms from the right atrium of sheep into four groups - normal sinus rhythm, atrial flutter, paroxysmal AF, chronic AF. This algorithm uses features derived from a wavelet transform representation of the signal to train an artificialneural network which is then used to classify the different arrhythmia. The success rates achieved for each subclass indicates that this approach is well suited for the study of atrial arrhythmia.
