artificialneural network have evolved from their biologically inspired roots to a well established means to solve a broad spectrum of engineering problems. The embedding into modern statistics has provided the necessary theoretical foundation for challenging engineering tasks, such as advanced real-time image and signal processing. These are exemplary demonstrations for the applicability of this approach to complex information processing. However, the large number of applications must not obscure the fact that there are some major unsolved problems concerning neuralnetworks. There are still no satisfactorily constructive ways to determine the optimal structure (elements as well as organization) or the learning and evaluation dynamics. The ongoing research addresses these problems. In addition to pursuing this direction, one can ask, what other lessons we can learn from biology concerning complex information processing. Our goal in this paper is to sketch a possible way from neuralnetworks to more comprehensive neural strategies.

An algorithm for multiresolution pyramid decomposition is described. At each stage, the smoothed (''lowpass'') image is obtained by combining morphological grayscale opening and closing. Using this technique, we avoid the systematic bias of traditional approaches, as illustrated by an example. As our application, we perform image enhancement by modifying the reconstruction scheme using a morphological edge detector. The processing scheme offers a method for edge-preserving noise (speckle) suppression, in which only a minor number of multiplications is required.

Coherent imagery emerges as one of the major domains in imageprocessing and includes topics as diversified as radar, medical and surface analysis. Whatever the application, the resulting image is noisy corrupted. In coherent imaging, images suffer from speckle noise [1], whose main characteristic is to be multiplicative. The proposed method takes explicitly into account the multiplicative property of the noise while preserving discontinuities in the restored image. Moreover, ina second step our algorithm estimates the noise, thus the information contained in the speckle still remains usable.

A new efficient image coding scheme, based on Quadtree Representation and Block Entropy Coding (QRBEC), for encoding the wavelet transform coefficients of images is presented. The property of HVS is also incorporated into the quantization process. In addition, how to flexibly control the quantization level as well as output bitrate of the coder is also investigated. The coding efficiency of the coder is quite competitive with the well-known EZW coder, and requires less computation burden. The proposed coding scheme can also be applied in image sequence coding, resulting in satisfactory performance.

Connected operators are increasingly used in imageprocessing due to their properties of simplifying the image with various criteria, without loosing contour's information. These properties are related to the connected operator approach that either preserves or completely eliminates a determined connected component, according to an established criterion of analysis. In this paper we will define a new connected operator for stereo images. The goal is to simplify one of the images (left) in the sense that the operator will eliminate the image components that are not present at a determined location in the other image (right). This filter let us select in a stereo image, objects as a function of their distance from the observer (for instance used in auto guided vehicles).

This paper describes a technique to ghosts cancellation without a Ghost Cancellation Reference signal. The existing vertical edges in TV image are used to estimate the channel characteristics. With the estimating results, the coefficients of the equalizer are updated. In this paper, a method to speed up the convergence is given. The equalizer structure for cancelling all kinds of ghosts is discussed too. A new improved solution is achieved by interpreting the TV synchronisation signal as a genuine edge.

This paper presents a technique for deblurring noisy images. It includes two processing blocks, one for denoising and another for blind image restoration. The denoising step is based on the theories of singular value decomposition and compression-based filtering. The deblurring step is based on a double-regularization technique. Experimental results show that the combination of these techniques is quite effective in restoring severely blurred and noise-corrupted images, without prior knowledge of either the noise or image characteristics.

We present in this paper the realization of a classification board, for real-time image segmentation. The classification of each pixel is completed using a real time extraction of attributs and a geometric classification method by stress polytope training, which ensures a high decision speed (100 ns per pixels) and good performances. The decision operator has been integrated in the form of a full custom circuit, and the extraction of parameters is performed using a single high density FPGA.
