Infrared (IR) observations from Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) on board Meteosat Second Generation (MSG)-2 satellite are assimilated into NCEP global data assimilation system (GDAS). The assimilation of current Geostationary Operational environmental Satellite (GOES) Imager data was also reinvestigated. The Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM) was used as observation operator for the assimilation of SEVIRI radiance observations. The CRTM was enhanced with several critical components for IR radiance assimilation, such as a dynamically-updated land surface emissivity data, as well as fast and accurate gaseous absorption modules. The Global Space-Based Inter-Calibration System (GSICS) calibration corrections were applied to improve the simulation of SEVIRI and GOES Imager radiances. Preliminary results show that inclusions of the SEVIRI radiances at water vapor channels (6.25 and 7.35 micron) and CO2 channel (13.4 micron) in Global Forecast System (GFS) produced significant positive impacts on the six-day forecasts. Assimilation of other five SEVIRI IR window channels in GFS reduces the positive impact. By applying GSICS calibration algorithm to correct SEVIRI and GOES-12 Imager observations biases, the impacts on GFS forecast were improved. Further studies are being carried out to improve the effective assimilation of SEVIRI IR window channels radiances.

Under a recently-funded NASA Earth Science Technology Office (ESTO) award we are now designing, and will eventually implement, a sensor web architecture that couples future Earth observing systems with atmospheric, chemical, and oceanographic models and data assimilation systems. The end product will be a "sensor web simulator" (SWS), based upon the proposed architecture, that would objectively quantify the scientific return of a fully functional model-driven meteorological sensor web. Our proposed work is based upon two previously-funded ESTO studies that have yielded a sensor web-based 2025 weather observing system architecture, and a preliminary SWS software architecture that had been funded by NASA's Revolutionary Aerospace Systems Concept (RASC) and other technology awards. Sensor Web observing systems have the potential to significantly improve our ability to monitor, understand, and predict the evolution of rapidly evolving, transient, or variable meteorological features and events. A revolutionary architectural characteristic that could substantially reduce meteorological forecast uncertainty is the use of targeted observations guided by advanced analytical techniques (e.g., prediction of ensemble variance). Simulation is essential: investing in the design and implementation of such a complex observing system would be very costly and almost certainly involve significant risk. A SWS would provide information systems engineers and Earth scientists with the ability to define and model candidate designs, and to quantitatively measure predictive forecast skill improvements. The SWS will serve as a necessary trade studies tool to: evaluate the impact of selecting different types and quantities of remote sensing and in situ sensors;characterize alternative platform vantage points and measurement modes;and to explore potential rules of interaction between sensors and weather forecast/data assimilation components to reduce model error growth and forecast uncertainty.

The Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU) on board the National Oceanic and atmospheric Administration (NOAA) polar-orbiting satellites were designed to measure the atmospheric temperature from the surface to the lower stratosphere under all weather conditions, excluding precipitation. Although the instrumental design and calibration were made primarily for monitoring the atmospheric weather processes, the MSU observations have been extensively used for detecting climate trend. However, calibration errors have been a major uncertainty in climate trend detections.. In order for the MSU data to be of high quality for climate trend and variability research, we have recently recalibrated the MSU satellites NOAA 10, 11, 12, and 14 using simultaneous nadir overpass (SNO) method. The calibration results in a well-merged 20-year radiance dataset for the MSU channels 2, 3, and 4. Limb-correction is applied to adjust the incident angles of the footprints. The limb-corrected radiances are further binned into 2.5(0) longitude by 2.5(0) latitude grids to generate deep-layer temperature datasets for the mid-troposphere (T-2) tropopause (T-3) and lower-stratosphere (T-4). The global ocean averaged trends for the recalibrated T-2, T-3, and T-4 are respectively 0.234 +/- 0.071 K/decade, 0.079 +/- 0.085 K/decade, and -0.414 +/- 0.287 K/decade for the 20-year time period from 1987 to 2006. Both the recalibrated radiance and deep-layer temperature datasets are freely available through the NESDIS/STAR website http://***/smcd/emb/mscat/***.

Ice clouds have been identified as one of the most uncertain components in atmospheric research. In recent years, the atmospheric radiative transfer and remote sensing community has made a concerted effort to improve the characterization of cirrus clouds. A number of airborne and balloon-borne observations have demonstrated that cirrus clouds are essentially composed of nonspherical ice crystals with various habits (or shapes) and sizes. In this paper, we report on some recent progresses towards the computation of the single-scattering properties nonspherical ice crystals and the relevant applications to remote sensing and radiative transfer simulations. Specifically, we have developed a database of the optical properties of ice crystals at the infrared wavelengths. In conjunction with the application of the scattering database, we also developed a fast infrared transfer model under cirrus cloudy condition, which is applied to the retrieval of ice clouds from satellite-based infrared measurements.

IASI was successfully launched on MetOP A on 19 October 2006. After the in-orbit commissioning, the performances of IASI were evaluated during the Cal/Val of level 1. Key parameters of instrument and on ground processing have been fixed for optimal performance and best quality data delivery. The first spectra and images of level I products show all the potential of IASI data for expected applications. Some illustrations are given here with maps of pseudo channels sensitive to trace gases, atmospheric profiles or maps of surface temperature qualitatively compared to maps from models. Level 2 processing to get these parameters has been implemented at Eumetsat and some products are currently under validation. The quality of IASI data paves the way to additional very promising products. A thorough analysis of cloud free spectra has been performed to extract the small signature of minor species like CFCs and HNO3. Nevertheless, the main limitation of IASI data remains clouds. It is showed here with the cluster analysis of AVHRR data registered in the IASI pixels and delivered as level I products that only a few cloud free pixels can used for full retrieval. A method making use of the cluster information has been developed. It permits to strongly increase the statistics where clear column profiles or columns above clouds can be retrieved. This scheme will be applied to the retrieval of the CO2 where large data set are needed to extract information from the spectra.

Hyperspectral infrared (IR) sounder from low earth orbit (LEO) provides temperature and moisture soundings with high accuracy and high vertical resolution, however, due to its low temporal coverage rate (twice every day for one sounder instrument), data are usually missing during short range convective storm development. The Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) onboard the next generation of geostationary (GEO) satellite, on the other hand, provides very fast coverage rate but lower vertical resolution and less accurate profiles. Combination of GEO ABI measurements and LEO hyperspectral IR sounder data may provide atmospheric evolution with high temporal resolution and fairly vertical structure. An algorithm is developed for monitoring the sounding evolution from combined GEO imager and LEO IR sounder data. The collocated geolocation of GEO imager and LEO sounder systems can (1) provide LEO sounder sub-pixel cloud characterization (mask, amount, phase, layer information, etc.) within the large sounder footprint;(2) be used for LEO sounder cloud-clearing for partly cloudy footprints;(3) provide background information in variational retrieval of cloud properties with sounder cloudy radiances;(4) provide real-time background information for GEO imager instantly without Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) data. The Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) kind the atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) measurements from the Earth Observing System's (EOS) Aqua satellite provide the opportunity to study the synergistic use of advanced imager and sounder measurements. The combined MODIS and AIRS data for various scenes are analyzed to study the utility of synergistic use of ABI products and LEO sounder radiances for better retrieving atmospheric soundings and cloud properties.

As Space Weather makes the transition from a research to an operational mode, the need for reliable and relevant datasets will be of paramount importance. Good research data will not necessarily be good operational data, we will discuss some reasons why. The first order data inputs required for the developing suite of Space Weather Forecast models (GAIM, CISM, EPPIM, etc) need to be identified at an early stage so that adequate observational networks (space and ground based) can be put into place. Lessons learned from decades of operational meteorological forecast systems should be applied. Ranking, relevance and cost-benefit decisions need to be performed on each component of the Operational Space Weather system to insure that the maximum amount of capability is obtained at a reasonable cost. We will examine a range of proposed space weather data inputs and attempt to apply these criteria to each of them.

The AIRS Science Team Version 5.0 retrieval algorithm became operational at the Goddard DAAC in July 2007 generating near real-time products from analysis of AIRS/AMSU sounding data. This algorithm contains many significant theoretical advances over the AIRS Science Team Version 4.0 retrieval algorithm used previously. Three very significant developments of Version 5 are: 1) the development and implementation of an improved Radiative Transfer Algorithm (RTA) which allows for accurate treatment of non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (non-LTE) effects on shortwave sounding channels;2) the development of methodology to obtain very accurate case by case product error estimates which are in turn used for quality control;and 3) development of an accurate AIRS only cloud clearing and retrieval system. These theoretical improvements taken together enabled a new methodology to be developed which further improves soundings in partially cloudy conditions, without the need for microwave observations in the cloud clearing step as has been done previously. In this methodology, longwave CO2 channel observations in the spectral region 700 cm(-1) to 750 cm(-1) are used exclusively for cloud clearing purposes, while shortwave CO, channels in the spectral region 2195 cm(-1) to 2395 cm(-1) are used for temperature sounding purposes. The new methodology for improved error estimates and their use in quality control is described briefly and results are shown indicative of their accuracy. Results are also shown of forecast impact experiments assimilating AIRS Version 5.0 retrieval products in the Goddard GEOS 5 data Assimilation System using different quality control thresholds.

For over three decades the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program's Operational Linescan System (OLS) has demonstrated a unique nighttime imaging capability using a high gain visible channel. Designed primarily to detect clouds through relative moonlight reflection contrasts, quantitative applications based on the OLS nighttime visible data are limited due to low radiometric (6-bit, or 64 count levels) resolution, lack of calibration, and not being accompanied by a large suite of other spectral bands (only a single thermal infrared window channel). Despite these limitations, the fundamental capabilities enabled by the nighttime visible band are truly unique, and worthy of closer inspection by the terrestrial, atmospheric, and space science communities alike - particularly in light of the inclusion of a comparable "Day/Night visible Band" (DNB) upon the Visible/Infrared Imager/Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) scheduled to fly upon the National Polar-orbiting Operation environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) constellation (and a risk-reduction preview upon the NPOESS Preparatory Project Satellite). This paper anticipates some of the capabilities of the VIIRS-DNB in the context of nighttime dust storm and snow cover mapping from lunar reflection, based on heritage sensors from the contemporary environmental satellite constellation.

The National Oceanographic and atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is now considering a microwave radiometer for the new series of Geostationary Operational environmental Satellites (GOES) to be launched starting in 2012. GOES-R is expected to begin operations around 2014 and will provide significant advances in Earth coverage, environmental data, and prediction capabilities. GOES' unique vantage point in fixed geostationary orbit provides continuous, near-real-time updates (observations) of weather and environmental conditions for the Americas and large portions of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. In general, GOES-R sensor improvements arise from more frequent updates, finer spatial/spectral resolution, and an expanded field of view. Infrared (IR) atmospheric sounders are designed to provide excellent observations in clear conditions. Critical information within clouds and under cloud cover, however, is not available in the IR spectrum. Microwave sounders can provide synergistic coverage by their ability to observe energy through clouds. NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS) AQUA with the Advanced Microwave Sounder Unit (AMSU) and atmospheric IR Sounder (AIRS) has illustrated the benefits of combining infrared and microwave sounder data. The benefits provided by polar microwave sounders can be extended to geostationary satellites. The combination of the Hyperspectral environmental Suite (HES) IR sounder and Geostationary Microwave Sounder (GMS) can likewise provide complete geostationary sounder coverage and precipitation *** our hemisphere. Three different sounders designs have been proposed for the GOES-R Geostationary Microwave Sounder (GMS);these designs would all use similar frequency bands to those of the AMSU A and B and therefore benefit from existing retrieval algorithms.
