The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) is a high-spatial-resolution multispectral imager on the Terra satellite launched in December 1999. The ASTER thermal infrared (TIR) subsystem has five spectral bands with a spatial resolution of 90 m in the TIR spectral region, which are used for generation of the standard products of surface temperature and surface spectral emissivity. High-resolution surface emissivity at five spectral bands is unique, and is particularly useful for geological mapping. However, the emissivity product is not always easy to use, because (1) its image size is about 60 km square which is not large enough for regional-scale studies, (2) its imaged area is not fixed to the world reference system (WRS) due to a flexible pointing system, and (3) standard atmospheric correction often fails under humid conditions. Thus, in order to improve the usability of the ASTER emissivity product, we are generating land surface emissivity maps in a regional scale by applying improved retrieval algorithms and stack/mosaic processing to an ASTER orthogonal projection dataset which have been produced from the ASTER data archives by the Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Japan. In the present paper, we introduce East-Asia land surface emissivity maps as the first result of this project. A comparison study with MODIS monthly emissivity products (MOD11C3) indicates that the generated maps give more reasonable emissivity spectra with higher spatial resolution than the MODIS emissivity products, though the maps have missing pixels in high latitude areas and humid areas.

The Digital Array Gas Radiometer (DAGR) concept is based on traditional and reliable Gas Filter Correlation Radiometry (GFCR) for remote trace gas detection and monitoring. GFCR sensors have been successful in many infrared remote sensing applications. Historically however, solar backscatter measurements have not been as successful because instrument designs have been susceptible to natural variations in surface albedo, which induce clutter and degrade the sensitivity. DAGR overcomes this limitation with several key innovations. First, a pupil imaging system scrambles the received light, removing nearly all spatial clutter and permitting a small calibration source to be easily inserted. Then, by using focal plane arrays rather than single detectors to collect the light, dramatic advances in dynamic range can be achieved. Finally, when used with the calibration source, data processing approaches can further mitigate detector non-uniformity effects. DAGR sensors can be made as small as digital cameras and are well suited for downlooking detection of gases in the boundary layer, where solar backscatter measurements are needed to overcome the lack of thermal contrast in the IR. Easily integrated into a satellite platform, a space-based DAGR would provide near-global sensing of climatically important species such as such as CO, CH(4), and N(2)O. Aircraft and UAV measurements with a DAGR could be used to monitor agricultural and industrial emissions. Ground-based or portable DAGRs could augment early warning systems for chemical weapons or toxic materials. Finally, planetary science applications include detection and mapping of biomarkers such as CH(4) in the Martian atmosphere.

Since a few years, digital frame cameras are being used for the recurrent conventional photogrammetric mapping tasks within Flanders (Belgium). As a result, area-wide, but mixed-sensor-type (Ultracam, DMC, ...) time series of digital airborne imagery are emerging. Since only recently, a trend can be observed that this imagery is increasingly used for environmental mapping tasks, such as agricultural acreage estimation, dry matter productivity estimation and mapping of vegetation stress. The algorithms generating such products often need quantitative measurements (i.e. at-sensor radiance or at-surface reflectance instead of a dimensionless digital number). Also, in applications where data from different sensor systems has to be fused, it often becomes inevitable to transform the imagery from digital number to radiance or reflectance. However, in operational photogrammetric environments, only little effort has been put into utilizing the attractive radiometric properties of digital photogrammetric cameras for quantitative remote sensing. In this paper, a typical operational situation is presented: the radiometric calibration of an older image set (Vexcel UltracamD images of 2004) by means of multiple recent in-situ hyperspectral measurements (17 spectra measured in the same period of the year of image acquisition and with the same weather conditions, but in 2008). Several possibilities are evaluated using the empirical line method combined with absolute radiometric preprocessing (i.e. atmospheric BRDF, target BRDF, haze correction), as well as relative radiometric preprocessing (i.e. histogram matching). The different pre-processing methods are not only tested on a stand-alone basis, but the effect of various combinations is also investigated.

Meteorological visibility is a basic parameter for aeronautical,seafaring,expressway and military *** most domestic and overseas meteorological departments,the method to measure visibility is by eyeballing,which lacks criteria and *** the instruments for visibility measurement,lidar is a powerful tool by directly collecting the backscattering laser light from the *** the 2006 Qingdao International Sailing Regatta,atmospheric horizontal visibility was measured by an eye-safe Micro-pulsed lidar(MPL)which was developed by the Ocean remote sensing Laboratory(ORSL)of the Ocean University of China(OUC)in Xiaomai island(36°3'9.91"N,120°25'37.10"E)from August 18 to 29,*** method was used for processing the data measured from *** this 12 days period,the visibility ranges from 1km to 30 km,covering many different weather *** MPL operated stably at all times including the continual measurement from August 21 to 23,2006 for both days and *** eye observation data from Qingdao Meteorological Bureau were obtained for *** results of MPL system show good agreement with the eye observations data,with a correlation coefficient of *** and comparisons successfully prove the capability and feasibility of the MPL system for atmospheric visibility.

Based on geographical informatics system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) technologies, we developed an improved valuation model system of ecosystem services value(ESV) assessment and evaluated the value of Zhejiang Province from November 2004 to December 2005 with monthly time step. Five parts of ecosystem services(ES) were included, and they were producing organic matter, atmospheric gas regulation, recycling nutrient matter, holding water resources and conserving soil and water. The universal soil loss equation (USLE) was applied for estimating the service value of conserving soil and water which expected to improve the effect of assessment. From the results, the overall value in the entire region was 1636.81×108 RMB, with unbalanced constitution of 5 parts. A clear seasonal division was shown in the overall value and most parts. The distribution pattern in latitude, longitude, altitude was revealed respectively. Most parts of ecosystem services performed consistently response to both seasonal and spatial variation, except for the service of holding water resources and conserving soil and water. The major characteristics of ESV distribution can be roughly explained by the distribution and variation pattern of NPP and other crucial meteorological elements. The assessment of ESV by integrating multi-sourced data can provide an relatively objective result and have some indications for natural resources management.

An adjoint limited area numerical weather prediction model with multiple nests has been developed. The adjoint modeling system has the capability to pass gradient information from the finer spaced nest to the coarser spaced domain. Therefore, gradients of scalar functions calculated from small scale features can be computed with respect to the large scale model state. Sensitivity experiments were performed to show that the nested adjoint model produces physically meaningful gradients. Results from data assimilation experiments will be presented at the conference. An ad joint model such as the one presented here, could be in important tool for variational assimilation schemes that intend to make use of high resolution remotely sensed data.

The Mail computer Interactive data Access System (McIDAS) project began over 30 years ago at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to analyze and visualize data from the first generation of geostationary weather satellites. McIDAS continues to provide a strong data analysis and visualization capability for the current environmental satellites. However, the next generation of operational remote sensing instruments under development for the NPOESS and GOES-R programs require software tools with expanded capability and performance to support innovative techniques for developing algorithms, visualizing data and products, and evaluating results. A project is underway at SSEC to develop the fifth generation of McIDAS, a java-based, open-source system for multispectral and hyperspectral researchers and algorithm developers that will provide powerful new data manipulation and visualization tools to work in this data rich environment. NASA EOS MODIS and AIRS data as well as MSG SEVERI and METOP IASI data are now being used in conjunction with in situ and gridded data to develop new analysis and product validation techniques in the McIDAS-V environment. This new data analysis and visualization system will support both researchers and operational users of the advanced measurement systems on NPOESS and GOES R.

remote sensing technology has been used in agricultural statistics since early 1970s in developed countries and since late 1970s in China. It has greatly improved the efficiency with its accurate, timingly and credible information. But agricultural monitoring using remote sensing has not yet been assessed with credible data in China and its accuracy seems not consistent and reliable to many users. The paper reviews different methods and the corresponding assessments of agricultural monitoring using remote sensing in developed countries and China, then assesses the crop area estimating method using Landsat TM remotely sensed data as sampling area in Northeast China. The ground truth is gathered with global positioning system and 40 sampling areas are used to assess the classification accuracy. The error matrix is constructed from which the accuracy is calculated. The producer accuracy, the user accuracy and total accuracy are 89.53%, 95.37% and 87.02% respectively and the correlation coefficient between the ground truth and classification results is 0.96. A new error index delta is introduced and the average delta of rice area estimation to the truth data is 0.084. delta measures how much the RS classification result is positive or negative apart from the truth data.

The Tibetan long-term monthly mean rainfall exhibits a SE to NW decrease, showing strong regionality. The summertime vigorous rainfall centers are roughly coincident with those of heat sources < Q(1)> averaged throughout the atmospheric extent, with latent heating making the greatest contribution to < Q(1)>. In the heat source stronger (weaker) year than normal, the western Pacific subtropical high amplifies (falls off), making westward extension (eastward withdrawal);the South-Asian high intensifies (weakening), eastward expanding (westward extending);summer monsoon becomes intense (enfeebled). In that case, the precipitation is more (less) in the Jiang-Huai valley compared to normal in relation to the rainfall lower (higher) than mean over the littoral provinces of South China, and two parallel anomalously deep wavetrains (just one wavetrain) of cyclones alternate with anti-cyclones over the Pacific.
