Tracking the Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) is of particular importance in monitoring aerosol contributions to global radiative forcing. Until now, the two standard techniques used for retrieving AOD were;(i) sun photometry, and (ii) satellite-based approaches, such as based DDV (Dense Dark Vegetation) inversion algorithms. These methods are only available for use during daylight time since they are based on direct or indirect observation of sunlight. Few attempts have been made to measure AOD behaviour at night. One such method uses spectrally-calibrated stars as reference targets but the number of available stars is limited. This is especially true for urban sites where artificial lighting hides most of these stars. In this research, we attempt to provide an alternate method, one which exploits artificial sky glow or light pollution. This methodology links a 3D light pollution model with in situ light pollution measurements. The basic idea is to adjust an AOD value into the model in order to fit measured light pollution. This method requires an accurate model that includes spatial heterogeneity in lighting angular geometry, in lighting spectral dependence, in ground spectral reflectance and in topography. This model, named ILLUMINA, computes 1st and 2nd order molecular and aerosol scattering, as well as aerosol absorption. These model features represent major improvements to previous light pollution models. Therefore, new possibilities for light pollution studies will arise, many of which are of particular interest to the astronomical community. In this paper we will present a first sensitive study applied to the ILLUMINA model.

The direct assimilation of satellite-measured infrared radiances into numerical weather prediction and cloud sounding applications is currently prohibited when these measurements include cloud radiative effects. The difficulty arises from the microphysical complexity of clouds and their radiative responses that are only now being adequately modeled for current and next generation satellite sensors. The parameterization of cloud properties to deliver much needed improvements in speed and accuracy of forward radiative transfer models is still under development. Indirect use of cloud-contaminated radiances by way of cloud-cleared radiances has thus become the initial focus of efforts to improve the spatial density of useful satellite radiance measurements. This is particularly important for satellite sensors with relatively wide fields of view as the probability of entirely cloud-free observations can be surprisingly low. Two classes of cloud-cleared radiance retrieval approaches developed so far comprise the synergistic use of 1) collocated infrared and microwave measurements, and 2) collocated infrared imaging and sounding measurements. For example, AIRS/AMSU and AIRS/MODIS cloud-cleared algorithms are being demonstrated by NASA Earth Observing System and are to be adopted by NPP/NPOESS that have similar measurements available from the instrument suites CrIS/ATMS and CrIS/VIIRS. In this paper, the characteristics of these cloud-cleared radiances and their potential for numerical weather prediction and cloudy sounding applications are evaluated. Preliminary results have shown that these two approaches, though quite different in character, are both effective and complementary. Where microwave measurements are unavailable, the synergistic imaging/sounding approach to cloud-clearing is the only reliable indirect use of cloud-contaminated infrared measurements, as is the case for geostationary platforms due to the antenna requirements for a meteorologically useful microwa

The calculation of Rayleigh scattering radiance is the first step of the atmospheric correction of ocean color remote sensing, which affects the quality of atmospheric correction significantly. This paper studies how the satellite attitude affects the accuracy of the Rayleigh scattering radiance calculation. Satellite attitude affects the geometry angles of the sun and sensor directly, and then affects the Rayleigh scattering radiance. The results show that roll angle affects Rayleigh scattering calculation most, and the relative error of Rayleigh scattering radiance calculation is up to 10% as the roll angle is 2.5 degrees. However, the effects of the pitch angle and yaw angle are very small, and the relative error of Rayleigh scattering radiance calculation is less than 1% as the pitch angle or yaw angle is 2.5 degrees. The results also show that, in order to achieve the 1% accuracy goal of the Rayleigh scattering radiance calculation, the satellite roll angle should be less than 0.3 degrees if the satellite attitude isn't corrected in the data pre-processing stage of ocean color remote sensing.

Understanding upper troposphere humidity is important in the context of radiative forcing and climate. We present a detailed statistic comparison of upper troposphere water vapor retrieval profiles derived from the atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) and in-situ measurements. The in-situ measurements are based on a recently compiled database of "best estimate" atmospheric state profiles, obtained from a careful selection of RS-90 radiosondes at Department of Energy atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) sites, during AIRS overpasses. The aim of this research is to improve the skill and accuracy of the retrieval algorithms in order to understand and quantify the biases between AIRS and RS-90 radiosondes.

In this study, the relationship between land use and cover change (LUCC) and variation of groundwater level and quality in the SanGong Oasis Region is investigated using a spatial geostatistical approach. Specifically, interactions among groundwater, surface water, and LUCC are analyzed through the utilization of geographical information system (GIS), remote sensing (RS) Imagery processing, and geostatistics. Study outputs indicate that recharging into the groundwater does not change significantly during the period from 1978 to 1998. However, both LUCC and groundwater level have changed substantially in the SanGong Oasis Region, and their variations are closely correlated to each other spatially and temporally over the past two decades. It has confirmed that urbanization process and increased industrial activities are the direct reasons of groundwater table descending and the deterioration of water quality. The results of this research have provided a scientific basis for understanding sustainability-related problems and solution options in the oasis areas of western China.

Lessons learned from the implementation, operation, and science processing from a number of successful NASA LaRC remote sensing experiments will be presented. Despite good flight heritage, well-known designs, and known data retrieval algorithms these experiments remain challenging. The authors will summarize common lessons learned from different project phases and discuss these lessons in the context of planned and future missions with emphasis on improving Level 1 data quality.

Over the history of remote sensing, the complexity and volume of data sets have increased unremittingly. The complexity of the data sets has led to the need for more descriptive metadata. The volume, resulting from both increased precision and range in the data sets, has led to the need for efficient data and portable handling techniques. Further, the precision calls for greater detail in describing and documenting the manner in which the data was collected and calibrated. This paper describes one view of the optimal product design for NPOESS requirements.

Hyperspectral data and products derived from instrumentation such as the atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS), Geosynchronous Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer (GIFTS) and the GOES-R Hyperspectral environmental Suite (HES) will impose storage and data retrieval requirements that far exceed the demands of earlier generation remote sensing instrumentation used for atmospheric science research. A new architecture designed to address projected real time and research needs is undergoing prototype design and development. The system is designed using proven aspects of distributed data storage networks, descriptive metadata associated with stored files, data cataloging and database search schemes, and a data delivery approach that obeys accepted standards. Preliminary implementation and testing of some components of this architecture indicate that the design approach shows promise of an improved method for storage and library functionality for the data volumes associated with operational hyperspectral instrumentation.

Five years of rainfall data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission are now available for use. This paper surveys comparisons of these rain rate data with buoy-based estimates over the Tropical Pacific and with simulations with the CCM3, a general circulation model of atmospheric circulation. We examine both the seasonal and diurnal cycles in the data. The TRMM data agree reasonably well with the buoy data for both the seasonal and diurnal cycles. While the data generally agree with the simulations, there are some discrepancies which can be attributed to model failures.
