atmospheric soundings derived from Global Positioning System radio occultations (GPSRO) acquired in low-Earth orbit have the potential to be global climate benchmark observations of significant value to the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS). Geophysical observables such as atmospheric pressure and temperature are derived by measuring propagation delay induced by the atmosphere, a measurement whose fundamental unit-the second-is absolutely determined by calibration against atomic clocks. In this paper, we analyze the sources of systematic and random error for GPSRO soundings to determine the steps needed to establish GPSRO as a climate benchmark observation. Benchmarks require specific processing strategies and specific forms of documentation so that confidence in the accuracy and precision of the measurements is assured. Establishing calibration traceability to absolute standards (SI-traceability) is an essential strategy. We discuss a wide range of error sources in a geophysical retrieval, such as orbit determination error, signal delay in the Earth's ionosphere, and quality control strategies. Uncalibrated ionospheric delay is identified as the error source deserving the most attention in establishing SI-traccability of the retrievals, to meet stringent climate observation requirements of 0.5 K accuracy and 0.04 K stability. Profile comparisons from the recently launched COSMIC constellation establish strong upper limits on systematic error arising from the individual instruments. These encouraging results suggest that GPSRO should become a permanent resource for the GCOS. These highly precise and accurate instruments can be deployed on future Earth Observation satellites at a low per-sensor cost and minimal interference to existing and planned observational programs.

As one of the critical parameters in the land-atmosphere exchange processes, land surface temperature (LST) plays an essential role in various domains, such as climate change, urban heat island effect, disaster monitoring, and evaporation retrieval. Thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing is one of the main approaches to obtaining LST on a large scale. For the sensors with only one TIR channel, the single-channel (SC) methods are commonly and effectively used to retrieve LST, as they are most suitable under such limitations. However, atmospheric correction is essential for the SC methods, which involves significant uncertainty and complexity. To reduce the atmospheric dependency of SC methods, this study proposes a Correlation-Hypothesis based Single-Channel (CH-SC) method to retrieve LST. In this method, the LST can be retrieved using the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) brightness temperature from a single TIR channel and the LSEs from two virtual adjacent channels, while atmospheric water vapor content (WVC) is used solely to assess atmospheric conditions. Consequently, the CH-SC method exhibits the least sensitive in atmospheric parameter errors compared to existing SC methods. This inherent robustness results in superior stability of retrieval accuracy, enhancing its practicality for real applications. Subsequently, the CH-SC method was applied to Landsat 7 data, alongside the mono-window (MW) method and generalized single-channel (GSC) method. The retrieved LSTs were compared with in-situ measurements for validation. As a result, the CH-SC method exhibited strong performance compared to in-situ measurements, with an RMSE of 2.83 K in SURFRAD sites and 4.02 K in BSRN sites, which was comparable to Landsat 7 LST product (3.15 K at SURFRAD and 4.26 K at BSRN) and outperforming other SC methods. The Climate features of summer sandstorms show that the season is rich in the disasters for the Gansu region, concentrated mainly in the Minqin, Dingxin and Jinta areas. The synoptic analysis of a rarely observed strong event indicates that in summer such dominant weather systems as the upper-level weak trough, shear line and thermal low are responsible for the sandstorm while in spring the tempest is generally triggered by large-scale systems. The upper-level jet's behaviors are not so manifest before the occurrence of the summertime sandstorm, with the jets suddenly intensified almost concurrently with its occurrence, which is one of the difficult points for forecasting the summer sandstorm. Now for the study we make use of satellite imagery and its sensings-based tracking as a more visualized tool for monitoring the onset, movement and coverage of the disaster.

In 2013, the Center of Excellence in remote sensing Education and Research (CERSER) added more satellite receiving hardware to its current National Oceanic and atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite system [2]. The program now processes both NOAA satellite images as well as Geostationary Operational environmental Satellite (GOES) [8] satellite images. This new imaging capability required the development of scripts on the TeraScan system to process satellite data received and produce an image file with overlay features such as latitude/longitude lines and political map outlines.

The NPOESS Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS)1 will collect data to permit the retrieval of the vertical and horizontal distribution of ozone in the Earth's atmosphere. Algorithm development efforts in connection with these measurements include the preparation of Algorithm Theoretical Basis Documents (ATBDs), Operational Algorithm Documents (OADs), and science grade code with associated test sets and documentation. These items are provided to the Interface data processing Segment (IDPS) for conversion and integration into the operational system. This paper addresses elements of the process being used to convert, test, and maintain the maturing and changing science grade code to the initial operational source code for the OMPS. The operational OMPS SDRs and EDRs will be generated by the IDPS, that is, ozone output items will include the sensor and environmental data records, associated metadata and product validation;e.g. ancillary data, calibration information and quality flags.

The Geosynchronous Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer (GIFTS) and the Hyperspectral environmental Suite (HES) instruments are geostationary infrared spectrometers. Geostationary orbit provides observations with very good time resolution, but also increases the effect of diffraction. There can be significant differences in emitted radiances due to clouds and changes in surface characteristics. High, thick clouds in particular are much cooler than clear areas. Diffraction causes radiation that originates from cloudy areas outside of the detector field of view to contaminate the clear pixels. GIFTS will also have two detector arrays on different focal planes, which may not be perfectly aligned. This can cause spatial misalignment between the data for the two spectral regions. High spatial resolution numerical models run at the University of Wisconsin - Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (UW-CIMSS) provide data for examining the diffraction and misalignment effects. The model data represents a variable cloud case during the IHOP field experiment at 1.3-km resolution. This paper outlines the production of high spatial resolution simulated data, characterization of the far field diffraction effects on radiances, and analysis of misalignment effects on temperature and moisture profile retrievals.

NOAA/NESDIS/Center for Satellite Applications and Research has been reprocessing and recalibrating the Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU) observations to generate atmospheric temperature dataset with climate quality. So far, observations from the MSU channels 2, 3, and 4 for NOAA 10, 11, 12, and 14 have been recalibrated using a recently-developed SNO (simultaneously nadir overpasses) sequential nonlinear calibration technique and a 20-year long deep-layer atmospheric temperature dataset from 1987 to 2006 has been generated. However, when using the SNO nonlinear technique to intercalibrate the MSU instrument for satellites before NOAA 10, one has to deal with the short overlap issue for satellites between NOAA 9 and NOAA 10. In this study, by extending the spatial distance criterion for the SNO matchups, we generate more SNO samplings for the short-overlapping satellites. We analyze the error characteristics of the SNO matchups when the spatial distance is extended to as large as 650km. We also generate calibration coefficients using the SNO nonlinear sequential intercalibration technique and then analyze how the intercalibration affects the SNO biases with different separation distances. These analyses will be helpful in determining the final calibration coefficients used for generating consistent MSU long-term temperature time series that will include all available satellites.

Geostationary Simultaneous Nadir Observations (GSNOs) are collected for Earth Observing System (EOS) atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) onboard Aqua and a global array of geostationary imagers. The imagers compared in this study are GOES-12 and METEOSAT-8. A single polar-orbiting satellite can be used to intercalibrate any number of geostationary imagers. Using a high spectral resolution sensor, in this case AIRS, with absolute calibration to within 0.1K in most bands brings this method closer to an absolute reckoning of Imager calibration accuracy based on laboratory measurements of the instrument's spectral response. The gap-filling method presented is an adequate method of compensating for AIRS spectral gaps in nearly all geostationary bands for comparisons done at or near the equator. The US Standard Atmosphere is adequate for the most part, but an atmosphere either calculated from an AIRS retrieval or one more suited to the environment in which comparisons are being made, could produce even better results.

In this study, remote-sensing technology was applied to investigate the air pollution concentration distributions in the area of Shajiao Power Station in Guangdong Province, China. Based on the analysis of satellite physical mechanism of remote-sensing information, a model for remote-sensing identification and processing of emitted gas was established in order to extract information about pollution diffusion. It is the first time in China that the accumulative concentration information was retrieved from TM Satellite data. The image shows pollutant distribution and impact area clearly. The method is useful in area atmospheric environmental quality survey.

The EUMETSAT Satellite Application Facility in support to Hydrology (H-SAF) focuses on development of new geophysical products on precipitation, soil moisture and snow parameters and the utilisation of these parameters in hydrological models, NWP models and water management. The development phase of the H-SAF started in September 2005 under the leadership of Italian Meteorological Service. The "Centro Nazionale di Meteorologia e Climatologia Aeronautica (C.N.M.C.A.)", the Italian National Weather Centre, that physically hosts the generation chain of precipitation products, carried on activities to reach the final target: development of algorithms, validation of results, implementation of operative procedure to supply the service and to monitor the service performances. The paper shows the architectural status of the H-SAF precipitation group and stress the component of operations. It is shown the full correspondence with the EUMETSAT approved H-SAF documents, in particular the Algorithm Theoretical Design Document (ATDD), where products characteristics are referenced. Are also reported the first results, produced during the first H-SAF Workshop, held in Rome in October 2007, of validation activities performed on version 1 products, and last results of products distribution to beta-users in preparation of distributing version 2.
