The long overdue clinical need for haptic-enabled surgical robotic systems has been poorly addressed in the past two decades. Haptic systems have shown high agility and precision, which can translate into less risk to patients. However, regulatory requirements, such as validating haptic systems as "human-in-the-loop" components have impeded their commercialization. The complexity of regulatory validation arises from the "human-in-the-loop" design of the system that complicates the validation of inter-subject dynamics variations. In this study, we have implemented an Impedance Matching Approach (IMA) for force feedback estimation and rendering that does not include the "human" in the loop as a component. In other words, the amount of force feedback rendered at the haptic device does not essentially rely on the human to adequately "resist" the motion of the haptic device. This feature makes our proposed method intrinsically safe against the haptic "kick" which commonly happens if the surgeon releases the handle of the haptic interface while rendering non-zero forces. We have previously shown the accuracy and stability of the linear IMA method for single-force components [1]. In addition, we have implemented a general Non-linear IMA (NIMA) framework that accounts for the impedance parameters when the instrument-tissue interaction is not linear. We now present successful test results on the accuracy of the NIMA method with 3D contact forces and motion commands in a robot-assisted laparoscopy environment.

Real-world practical systems inherently exhibit non-linearities in their dynamics. Also, it is known that a time-varying delay exists in the system state or input-output. Combined, it affects the stability of the closed-loop system. It also increases the complexity of the controller design. In-depth controller design research on the class of nonlinear Systems with Time-Varying Delay (NSTVD) has been the focus of the control community for many years. However, there is a lack of Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and classifications of the papers on this topic. This paper aims to review controller design utilizing a neural network model for the class of NSTVD systems. The study employs Kitchenham's SLR method to gather, analyze and synthesize published papers from reliable databases between 2017 and 2021. The bibliometric analysis for the selected 38 papers reveals the prolific authors, countries, affiliations, publishers, co-authorship network, co-occurrences of keywords, and ten most-cited papers. Finally, this paper developed a conceptual map outlining six multi-layered findings: the addressed problem, control design method, nonlinear system properties, time-varying delay properties, system constraint properties, and actuator limit properties. A brief qualitative analysis of the ten most-cited papers is performed based on the map. The findings highlighted that the proposed methods have shown encouraging results in the simulation domain and can be used as a source of inspiration for future studies and implementation of the neural controller design of the NSTVD system. © 2023 IEEE.

Increasing attention has recently been devoted to the multidisciplinary investigation of functional brain-heart interplay (BHI), which has provided meaningful insights in neuroscience and clinical domains including cardiology, neurology, clinical psychology, and psychiatry. While neural (brain) and heartbeat series show high nonlinear and complex dynamics, a complexity analysis on BHI series has not been performed yet. To this end, in this preliminary study, we investigate BHI complexity modulation in 17 healthy subjects undergoing a 3-minute resting state and emotional elicitation through standardized image slideshow. Electroencephalographic and heart rate variability series were the inputs of an ad-hoc BHI model, which provides directional (from-heart-to-brain and from-brain-to-heart) estimates at different frequency bands. A Fuzzy entropy analysis was performed channel-wise on the model output for the two experimental conditions. Results suggest that BHI complexity increases in the emotional elicitation phase with respect to a resting state, especially in the functional direction from the heart to the brain. We conclude that BHI complexity may be a viable computational tool to characterize neurophysiological and pathological states under different experimental conditions.

Recent advances in autonomous vehicles have encouraged researchers to provide accurate and efficient safety verification tools. Reachability analysis is one way to provide these safety and stability certificates for any dynamical systems. In this paper, we are proposing a model-based reachability approach for the performance analysis of vehicle dynamics. Reachable sets demonstrate all the possible solutions of a dynamical system that can be reached starting from a set of initial conditions. This analysis particularly has importance in both on-road and off-road vehicles, where the driver can lose control of the vehicle for some uncertain initial conditions, resulting in an unwanted path, leading to collision or missing the target. The computation of reachable sets becomes challenging for the vehicle due to the nonlinearity present in the model. In this paper, we are proposing a Koopman theory-based approach using principal eigenfunctions and the Koopman spectrum. The principal eigenfunction reduces the computational complexity and provides a formal approximation of reachable sets. We demonstrate the proposed approach's usefulness in computing the reachable sets for the nonlinear quarter-car dynamics. On comparing the results with the time-domain simulations, we found our approach to be quicker. ©2023 IEEE.

This paper introduces an efficient first-order optimization approach for optimal control of nonlinear dynamical systems. The primary challenges in these systems include nonlinearity in dynamics and nonconvexity in the constraints on state and control variables. Traditional sequential convex programming (SCP) methods, while commonly employed to address these challenges, are computationally demanding and rely heavily on initial conditions. Our proposed method reformulates nonlinear optimal control problems into linear control problems with nonconvex constraints, utilizing a first-order approach that projects onto nonconvex sets. This approach significantly reduces computational complexity, aligning it with that of solving a single convex problem. Numerical experiments on spacecraft orbit transfer with complex constraints validate the effectiveness of our algorithm in managing nonlinear optimal control problems with non-convex constraints.

The access of massive heterogeneous devices to the power grid has been dramatically increasing the complexity of power system dynamics. In this situation, traditional power system stability analytics in a centralized manner may fail due to the curse of dimensionality. The model-based aggregation methods can reduce the scale of the system model, but may encounter obstacles when dealing with heterogeneous dynamical devices. This paper proposes an aggregation method for reducing the complexity of stability analysis. In contrast to conventional model-based aggregation methods, our method is based on the newly-proposed distributed stability index (DSI). To this end, we first explain how to decide the aggregation areas in terms of DSI. Then, the aggregated DSI of a cluster of devices is derived. Afterward, a correction method is established to compensate for the loss effect caused by transmission impedance. Combining the proposed aggregation and correction methods, the practical procedure for stability assessment is presented. Finally, the results are verified by simulations on the IEEE-33 distribution system. © 2023 Technical Committee on Control Theory, Chinese Association of Automation.

Estimating fluid dynamics is classically done through the simulation and integration of numerical models solving the Navier-Stokes equations, which is computationally complex and time-consuming even on high-end hardware. This is a notoriously hard problem to solve, which has recently been addressed with machine learning, in particular graph neural networks (GNN) and variants trained and evaluated on datasets of static objects in static scenes with fixed geometry. We attempt to go beyond existing work in complexity and introduce a new model, method and benchmark. We propose EAGLE, a large-scale dataset of ∼1.1 million 2D meshes resulting from simulations of unsteady fluid dynamics caused by a moving flow source interacting with nonlinear scene structure, comprised of 600 different scenes of three different types. To perform future forecasting of pressure and velocity on the challenging EAGLE dataset, we introduce a new mesh transformer. It leverages node clustering, graph pooling and global attention to learn long-range dependencies between spatially distant data points without needing a large number of iterations, as existing GNN methods do. We show that our transformer outperforms state-of-the-art performance on, both, existing synthetic and real datasets and on EAGLE. Finally, we highlight that our approach learns to attend to airflow, integrating complex information in a single iteration. © 2023 11th International conference on Learning Representations, ICLR 2023. Understanding the neural dynamics of cognitive tasks is fundamental to neuroscience. This study investigated neural responses during cognitive loading in arithmetic tasks using both linear and nonlinear characterizations of electroencephalography (EEG) signals. We extracted spectral features (alpha, beta, delta, theta, and gamma band powers) and nonlinear features (Higuchi’s Fractal Dimension, sample entropy, and spectral entropy) to analyze neural dynamics under cognitive load. The EEG signals were initially denoised using Discrete Wavelet Transform, followed by feature extraction and channel-wise analysis. The results indicate that cognitive loading significantly shifts power across all frequency bands. nonlinear features provide deeper insights into the adaptability of the brain to cognitive demands. Importantly, changes in neural dynamics are not uniform across brain regions, with frontal and temporal areas being more involved. The features studied effectively characterized neural changes during cognitive loading, and hold potential for future research in various contexts, including educational settings.

This paper introduces a distributed control strategy for constraint-coupled networked systems with nonlinear dynamics. Problems of this type are often too complicated to be solved in a centralized way, such that efficient distributed solution is required. The proposed method first casts the global problem into a mixed-integer programming (MIP) problem, and then solves the MIP problem by use of recently developed distributed solution schemes for this problem class. A reduction of the computational complexity compared to the centralized solution as well as the satisfaction of all constraints are guaranteed, and its efficiency is illustrated for a numeric example.
