This paper introduces a physically-intuitive notion of inter-area dynamics in systems comprising multiple interconnected energy conversion modules. The idea builds on an earlier general approach of setting their structural properties by modeling internal dynamics in stand-alone modules (components, areas) using the fundamental conservation laws between energy stored and generated, and then constraining explicitly their Tellegen’s quantities (power and rate of change of power). In this paper we derive, by following the same principles, a transformed state-space model for a general nonlinear system. Using this model we show the existence of an area-level interaction variable, intVar, whose rate of change depends solely on the area internal power imbalance and is independent of the model complexity used for representing individual module dynamics in the area. Given these structural properties of stand-alone modules, we define in this paper for the first time an inter-area variable as the difference of power wave incident to tie-line from Area I and the power reflected into tie-lie from Area II. Notably, these power waves represent the interaction variables associated with the two respective interconnected areas. We illustrate these notions using a linearized case of two lossless inter-connected areas, and show the existence of a new inter-area mode when the areas get connected. We suggest that lessons learned in this paper open possibilities for computationally-efficient modeling and control of inter-area oscillations, and offer further the basis for modeling and control of dynamics in changing systems comprising faster energy conversion processes.

Leveraging the negative differential resistance of a NbOx volatile threshold switch, manufactured at NaMLab, we recently presented the simplest ever-reported physical system, undergoing the same counterintuitive silence-to-regular beating transition, which Smale observed in a higher-order biological reaction-diffusion network back in 1974. This paper gains a deeper insight into the nonlinear dynamics of the proposed memristor cellular neural network, revealing how the destabilization of the homogeneous solution, possible if and only if each of the identical cells is poised on the Edge of Chaos when let decoupled from the other ones, results in the bistability of the inhomogeneous.

This study proposes an optimal cooperative control framework for heterogeneous vehicle platoons using a neural network (NN)-based reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm in an identifier-critic-actor framework. Typically, determining the optimal control policy requires solving the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation, but the presence of nonlinear terms within the HJB equation makes deriving analytical solutions challenging. While RL algorithms can overcome this issue, existing NN-based RL approaches are inherently complex as their update rules are derived from gradient descent optimization of the squared approximation of the HJB equation. This complexity makes their implementation challenging for nonlinear multi-vehicle systems with unknown dynamics. The proposed control strategy for platooning leverages an NN-based RL algorithm, where the update rules are directly derived from the negative gradient of a positive function that is mathematically equivalent to the HJB equation. Additionally, an NN-based identifier is incorporated into the platooning control design to dynamically estimate unknown vehicle dynamics in real time. The methodology is experimentally validated using the high-fidelity Mixed Traffic Simulator (MiTaS) co-simulation platform, which combines the Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) microscopic traffic simulator with MATLAB environment. Simulations results demonstrate the efficacy of the learned strategy in achieving optimal leader-tracking performance.

Model selection methods are used in different scientific contexts to represent a characteristic data set in terms of a reduced number of parameters. Apparently, these methods have not found their way in the multibody systems dynamics literature. Multibody models can be considered parametric models in terms of their dynamic parameters and model selection techniques can then be used to express these models in terms of a reduced number of parameters. These parameter-reduced models are expected to have a computational complexity smaller than the original one, and still preserve the desired level of accuracy. They are also known to be good candidates for parameter estimation purposes. In this work, simulations of the actual model are used to define a data set representative of the standard working conditions of the system. A parameter-reduced model is chosen and its parameter values estimated so that they minimize a prediction error on these data. To that end, model selection heuristics as well as normalized error measures are proposed. Using this methodology two multibody systems with very different characteristic mobility are analyzed. Very important reductions in the number of parameters and in the computational cost are obtained without compromising too much on the reduced model accuracy. As an aside result, a generalization of the base parameter concept to the context of parameter-reduced models is proposed.

In this paper, we study the adaptive fuzzy decentralized control problem for the fractional-order nonlinear large-scale systems in strict-feedback form. The controlled systems contain unknown nonlinearities. In the process of recursive design, the global approximation ability of fuzzy logic systems (FLSs) are utilized to cope with the unknown nonlinear continuous functions of the considered systems. In addition, in order to avoid the issue of "explosion of complexity" inherent in the traditional backstepping control design technique, the dynamic surface control (DSC) technique is introduced into the control design. Under the frameworks of the backstepping control design technique, DSC technique and adaptive fuzzy decentralized control theory, an adaptive fuzzy decentralized DSC scheme is put forward. On the basis of the fractional-order Lyapunov stability theory, it is confirmed that all the signals in the controlled systems are bounded and the tracking errors are able to converge to a small neighborhood of the origin. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

This paper presents an algorithm to apply nonlinear control design approaches to the case of stochastic systems with partial state observation. Deterministic nonlinear control approaches are formulated under the assumption of full state access and, often, relative degree one. We propose a control design approach that initially generates a control policy for nonlinear deterministic models with full state observation. The resulting control policy is then employed to construct an importance-like probability distribution over the space of control sequences which are to be evaluated for the true stochastic and state-uncertain dynamics. In the sampling step of a random search control optimization procedure, this distribution serves to focus the exploration effort on certain regions of the control space. The sampled control sequences are assigned costs determined by a prescribed finite-horizon performance and safety measure that considers stochastic dynamics. This sampling algorithm is parallelizable, exhibits computational complexity indifferent to the state dimension, and probabilistically guarantees safety over the prescribed prediction horizon. A numerical simulation is provided to compare the presented approach to the certainty equivalence controller.

Neural models are equivalent to dynamic systems from a physics-inspired view, implying that computation on neural networks can be interpreted as the dynamical interactions between neurons. However, existing work models neuronal interaction as a weight-based linear transformation, and the nonlinearity comes from the nonlinear activation functions, which leads to limited nonlinearity and data-fitting ability of the whole neural model. Inspired by Riemannian geometry, we interpret neural structures by projecting neurons onto the Riemannian neuronal state space and model neuronal interaction with Riemannian metric (RieM), which provides a neural representation framework with higher parameter efficiency. With RieM, we further design a novel data-free neural compression mechanism that does not require additional fine-tuning with real data. Using backbones like ResNet and Vision Transformer, we conduct extensive experiments on datasets such as MNIST, CIFAR-100, ImageNet-1k, and COCO object detection. Empirical results show that, under equal compression rates and computational complexity, models compressed with RieM achieve superior inference accuracy compared to existing data-free compression methods. The stability and safety of uncertain nonlinear systems have always been an essential and hard task in the automation field. For the forward invariance of the safety set of the system under unmodeled dynamics, a new concept of data-driven high-order iterative control barrier function (DHICBF) is presented. To overcome the structural complexity and dependence on dynamic models of traditional robot controllers, an iterative learning mechanism is introduced and a modelfree iterative predictive controller (MFIPC) is designed. The controller can be progressively optimized by predicting future information so that it can cope with dynamic changes and uncertainties in the environment. On this basis, quadratic programming (QP) that unifies the DHI-CBF with the MFIPC is established, which is able to prioritize the safety of the system in case of conflict between the desired output and the security boundary. Finally, the application for Franka-Panda robot demonstrates the superiority of the presented algorithm.

Anomalies detection plays a vital role in ensuring the stability and smoothness of the blast furnace ironmaking process. Due to its complexity, data-driven fault detection has become a hot topic for the blast furnace ironmaking process. To monitor the process of the blast furnace, this paper proposes a fault detection method based on Canonical Variate Analysis and Support Vector Data Description (CVA-SVDD). CVA is a state space-based monitoring tool that is effective in dealing with process dynamics. SVDD is a data domain description method, also known as a one-classification method, which can be used for outlier detection and has the advantage of solving the problem of describing nonlinear and non-Gaussian distributed data. Specifically, a CVA model is first constructed for the process variables to generate a series of feature vectors, and then the features are further monitored using SVDD, which is used to fit the data into a hypersphere so that its radius can be used as a health indicator in fault detection. A real blast furnace ironmaking process is employed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The Koopman operator theory provides an alternative to studying nonlinear networked dynamical systems (NDS) by mapping the state space to an abstract higher dimensional space where the system evolution is linear. The recent works show the application of graph neural networks (GNNs) to learn state to object-centric embedding and achieve centralized block-wise computation of the Koopman operator (KO) under additional assumptions on the underlying node properties and constraints on the KO structure. However, the computational complexity of learning the Koopman operator increases for large NDS. Moreover, the computational complexity increases in a combinatorial fashion with the increase in number of nodes. The learning challenge is further amplified for sparse networks by two factors: 1) sample sparsity for learning the Koopman operator in the non-linear space, and 2) the dissimilarity in the dynamics of individual nodes or from one subgraph to another. Our work aims to address these challenges by formulating the representation learning of NDS into a multi-agent paradigm and learning the Koopman operator in a distributive manner. Our theoretical results show that the proposed distributed computation of the geometric Koopman operator is beneficial for sparse NDS, whereas for the fully connected systems this approach coincides with the centralized one. The empirical study on a rope system, a network of oscillators, and a power grid show comparable and superior performance along with computational benefits with the state-of-the-art methods.
