An auto lidar design will start with a corner case such as a small child stepping out from between parked cars at a range. The size, and range, of the object to be detected determine required angular resolution. The range depends on the speed of the auto, which determines stopping distance.. An auto lidar should be designed to have a range longer than the required stopping distance by some distance margin. A lidar designer concerned about urban driving will not require as long a range as a designer concerned about the autobahn. Some auto lidars will scan in elevation, but others will use an array of detectors to cover the full elevation, and just scan in azimuth. A long range lidar is more likely to only cover a frontal azimuth region, such as 120 degrees, whereas a shorter range lidar is likely to cover 360 degrees in elevation. It is more likely longer range lidars will be at eye safer wavelengths, such as 1550 nm. To keep cost down many designers prefer diode lasers instead of fibers, but diode lasers cannot be Q switched, so have low peak power. Most auto lidars today are pulsed, so if the designer uses diode lasers there will usually be one laser per detector, whereas with a fiber laser there may only be a single laser illuminating a line that is viewed by a detector array.

Nanophotonic devices, such as CMOS image sensor (CIS) pixels, are formed by stacking multiple layers of semiconductor materials. The complex refractive indices of these materials vary with the wavelength of light. Currently, industrial development of photonic devices includes a design step where light propagation is simulated using numerical methods, such as finite-difference time-domain (FDTD). Such simulations require that the refractive indices of the constituent materials be known accurately. Most commonly employed methods for computing the real and imaginary parts of the dispersive refractive indices are based either on the evaluation of the Kramers-Kronig (K-K) integral, or on the use of theoretical models of permittivity. These methods rely on the experimentally measured reflectivity or transmissivity spectra of thin films of a material to determine its refractive indices. In the first part of this paper, we describe the computation of the dispersive refractive indices of certain materials using an optimization routine based on a genetic algorithm and the coherent reflectivity and transmissivity spectra of thin-films. This approach finds the global optimum unlike earlier methods based on local optimization techniques. In the second part of the paper, we evaluated the K-K integral and used the Lorentz model of permittivity to compute the real part of the refractive index of Rhodamine B from its imaginary part. The imaginary part was determined from the transmission spectrum of a thin film of Rhodamine B. Recently, we used a similar strategy to compute the dispersive refractive index of an on-chip color filter commonly used for CIS pixel.

Lensless light-field imaging with Fresnel zone aperture (FZA) is a technology that enables lensless cameras with beneficial features such as light calculation load in the image reconstruction processing, and refocusing, i.e. post-capturing focus adjustment. The ability to refocus indicates that the lensless camera s 3D information of the scene and the depth information can be extracted through comparison of contrasts among reconstructed images at different focus distances. This feature is promising since monocular 3D sensing can be achieved without using special light sources. However, since exhaustive search is needed to extract depth information, application of the contrast method is unsuitable for purposes that require real-time depth sensing. To overcome this limitation, we aimed to establish a new fast 3D sensing algorithm for lensless cameras with FZA. The proposed algorithm is based on our findings that reconstructed images of the lensless camera are complex images that have values in real and imaginary parts, and the sign of the imaginary part is reversed when the focus position of the lensless camera crosses the in-focus position. Since this "zero-crossing point" can be calculated through simple interpolations, 3D sensing can be achieved without exhaustively searching over numbers of reconstructed images with various focus positions. We have verified the effectiveness of the algorithm through simulation and experiments with developed prototypes. The algorithm enables real-time compact 3D sensors suitable for various applications, e.g. smartphones, robots, and vehicles.

We investigated several curved vane baffle designs coated with specular black paint as an inexpensive manufacturing alternative to traditional diffuse baffles vanes to reduce stray light and heat due to absorption in a standard Cassegrain telescope design configuration. The heat absorption is a very large problem in infrared systems and the specular designs solve this part of the problem. Our study involved simulating two different types of baffle systems, diffuse and specular painted vanes on the main barrel baffle. The first type of baffle consisted of evenly and non-evenly spaced diffusely black coated straight planar vanes on the main barrel baffle and a second type using specular black paint on curved vanes. TracePro, a stray light simulation software from Lambda Research Corporation, was used to simulate and compare each of the nine baffle systems for stray light rejection. The diffuse black painted straight vane baffle design was used as the baseline design to compare results to the other eight designs. In all designs except for the baseline design, TracePro's local downhill simplex optimization method was used to optimize each vane curvature and spacing in the main barrel baffle to reject incoming stray light. These curved vanes were designed to reject stray light back out of the main barrel baffle rather than to be absorbed by diffuse black paint.

This research deals with an approach of holistic optimization for optical systems in one open software environment. Studying the available methods of optical design and optimization packages, we understand that all existing approaches have drawbacks and/or missing elements. Hence, we chose to focus on: (i) develop an open optical design software from scratch, (ii) a multi-objective approach that considers not only the image quality, but also the post image processing, (iii) broad exploration of the holistic design space to find the best possible trade-off solutions. In any optical design software process flow, we first need the lens data from the user. Next we trace the rays along the optical system to calculate the OPD map at the exit pupil. Notably, the efficiency and precision of any optical design software depends on the number of rays traced. Here we improved the performance of the design software by using interpolation schemes. We implemented bilinear, cubic, spline interpolation schemes and compared the results. Based on the OPD analysis we estimate the performance of the optical system by calculating the FFT and Huygens PSF, MTF, spot diagram, OPD diagram and Zernike coefficients. Here we also address the sampling problems of the FFT PSF and study the relationship between the sampling of OPD and PSF. In contrast to commercial design software we disclose and extend the underlying algorithms and show the impact on the results. As a main feature we employ image processing libraries to enhance the image inside the optimization iteration. Hence, we build an end to end optical design software in which we allow tolerances to certain optical imaging aberrations and still retrieve the same processed image *** final software is an open source and is available to all and anyone can contribute to improve it in future. OptiPro systems, LLC has been recognized as a U.S. leader in computer-controlled equipment for manufacturing high precision optical components found in medical, military, aerospace, night vision and many other industrial and commercial applications. OptiPro's success in winning several Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) grants through the Navy, NASA and the Army have led to the commercialization of new machines, software and processes for grinding, polishing and measuring complex optics such as windows and domes. OptiSonic machines incorporate the latest in ultrasonic machining technology by adding 20-40 kHz of adaptive oscillation to the grinding tool, which reduces force on the tool and part during processing. OptiSonic machines have proven to increase processing speed and precision when grinding various hard optical materials that are ideal for hypersonic applications. UltraForm Finishing (UFF) machines are capable of deterministically finishing windows, domes, and other complex optical elements through a patented sub-aperture polishing technique. This method involves a moving belt of polishing material wrapped around a precision compressive wheel. UltraSurf machines deliver ultra-precision non-contact metrology though the utilization of high-quality machine components and the latest non-contact probe technologies. The measuring probe is scanned over the optical surface while maintaining perpendicularity and a constant focal offset. Finally, our PROSurf freeform computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software is used to develop advanced toolpaths for each of these platforms. We will present an overview of each of these technologies and discuss how they are advancing the precision optics manufacturing world.

Probability Density Functions (PDFs) describing intensity fluctuations of a propagated beam are necessary to reliably predict operation of Free-Space-optical (FSO) systems. This becomes especially important when considering the tails of the distribution. For example, accuracy in the low-intensity tail is necessary in the design of FSO communication systems as it determines the probability of fade. Accuracy in the high-intensity portion of the tail is necessary for eye-safety calculations and to prevent equipment damage. In this work, we evaluate PDF models considering the statistics of the fit to empirical data for point and distributed apertures for several values of Rytov variance. Based on p-values and level of significance, we compare the quality of the fit of common PDF models to empirical data. As part of this, we evaluate the transition of the best fit PDF as the aperture area is increased. Both simulated and measured data will be included in this analysis.

We introduce the powerful Deep Learning (DL) strategy to evaluate the security strength of computational-ghost-imaging-based cryptosystems. It's well known that the computational Ghost Imaging (CGI) technique has an excellent advantage of anti-noise ability, hence the CGI-based cryptosystems are much easier to be optically implemented, compared with previous various kinds of optical cryptosystems. However, an objective and comprehensive security analysis still must be carried out before any a cryptosystem is claimed to be safe or reliable. Unfortunately, we find out that the current CGI-based cryptosystems and even its security-enhanced ones both have security flaws. If an opponent gets a set of chosen plaintexts and their corresponding ciphertexts, an "equivalent key" or "equivalent decryption network" could be find out by training the pairs of "plaintext-ciphertext" with DL method, in which we select the Deep Neural Network (DNN) as the fundamental structure. Furthermore, we also carried out some simulations to demonstrate the performance of our proposed method under two severe conditions: down-sampling and Gaussian noise. We believe our methodology is suitable for a major part of existing optical cryptosystems including the CGI-based ones. © optics & Photonics International Congress 2019.

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is one of the most mature quantum technologies and can provide quantum-safe security in future communication networks. Since QKD in fiber is limited to a range of few hundred kilometers, one approach to bridge continental scale distances may be the use of high altitude pseudo satellites (HAPS) as mobile trusted nodes in the stratosphere. In parallel, free-space laser communication for high rate data transmission has been a subject of research and development for several decades and its commercialization is progressing rapidly. Important synergies exist between classical free-space communication and QKD systems since the quantum states are often implemented using the same degrees of freedom such as polarization or field amplitude and phase. These synergies can be used to benefit from the progress in classical free-space laser communication in QKD applications. In this paper, the use case of QKD in a stratospheric environment is described wherein HAPS may serve as relay station of secret keys and encrypted data. The mission scenario and HAPS capabilities are analyzed to derive special requirements on the stratospheric laser terminal, the link geometry and the ground segment with respect to a feasibility demonstration. To obtain a flexible and compatible system, discrete variable and continuous variable QKD protocols are considered to be implemented side by side in the HAPS payload. Depending on the system parameters, it can be beneficial to use the one or the other kind of protocol. Thus, a direct comparison of both in one and the same system is of scientific interest. Each of the protocols has particular requirements on coupling efficiency and implementation. Link budget calculations are performed to analyze possible distances, key rates and data transmission rates for the different schemes. The system of AR became very popular for educational, military, entertainment and other areas. There are many possible variants of organization the optical part of such schemes. The very important part of the system is a combiner, that is an element which imposes augmented image over the surrounding environment. The power combiner helps to increase the eye relief, but in the case of the tilted power combiner, it adds a rather large amount of off-axis aberrations. These aberrations should be corrected by the following part of the system. Many ways of composing the system with tilted power combiner have been considered and can be found in modern literature. We consider special types of aberrations added by the curved combiner and discuss the ways of the correction. We also analyze possible layouts and their properties for using together with FLCOS and AMOLED microdisplays.
