In this paper we will report on the status of the instrumentation project for the European Southern Observatory's Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). Three instruments are in the construction phase: HARMONI, MICADO and METIS. The multi-conjugate adaptive optics system for MICADO, MAORY, is also under development. Preliminary design Reviews of all of these systems are planned to be completed by mid-2019. The construction of a laser tomographic module for HARMONI is part of "Phase 2" of the ELT: the design has been advanced to Preliminary design level in order to define the interface to the HARMONI spectrograph. Preparations for the next instruments have also been proceeding in parallel with the development of these instruments. Conceptual design studies for the multi-object spectrograph MOSAIC, and for the high resolution spectrograph HIRES have been completed and reviewed. We present the current design of each of these instruments and will summarise the work ongoing at ESO related to their development.

The Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) is currently planned for construction at Las Campanas Peak in northern Chile. part of the next generation of extremely large telescopes, GMT will be one of the most powerful ground-based telescopes in operation in the world. Due to the larger aperture envisioned for GMT, characterization and control of the air flow entering and circulating within the enclosure will be required to maintain the highest possible image quality. Aero-thermal interactions between the site topography, enclosure, internal systems, and optics are complex. A key parameter for image quality is the thermal gradient between the terrain and the air mass entering the enclosure, and how quickly that gradient can be dissipated to equilibrium. Because the thermal gradients are highest near the ground, an important function of the GMT enclosure is to minimize the flow of ground-layer air entering the enclosure. By doing so, a more uniform air density above the telescope will enable higher image quality. The design of the GMT lower enclosure is driven by equipment storage and access requirements but also directly impacts the origin and quality of the air entering the enclosure aperture. To ensure the highest quality GMT optical performance, computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models and specialized analyses are utilized to evaluate several lower enclosure designs for their ability to limit the amount of ground-layer air entering the enclosure aperture. Lower enclosure designs with traditional solid outer walls promote the formation of "necklace" vortices, which tend to direct near-surface air, containing steep thermal gradients, into the enclosure aperture, potentially reducing image quality. Modifications to the lower enclosure, such as perforating the outer walls, are shown to suppress these necklace vortices at the expense of added structural complexity and/or reduced internal storage space. optical Wireless Communication (OWC) systems rapidly increase their importance in very long-distance deep space communication scenarios. However, the high performance requirements of deep space OWC systems demand preliminary experiments which are unmanageable in real conditions. Regarding this issue, an innovative approach for testing deep space optical communication links in controlled laboratory environment is developed. The proposed testbed is based on fibre optics technology and combines various modules which represent a real deep space OWC link. Similar to already demonstrated deep space missions, the implemented optical receiver is Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon Detector (SNSPD) characterized with single photon sensitivity and high detection efficiency. Consequently, in this paper an authentic deep space Poisson channel is emulated and examined. The given theoretical description of the Poisson process is supported by real SNSPD measurements in terms of high efficient single photon detection. The provided measured graphs clearly show the operation of SNSPD. In addition, a variable optical attenuator (VOA) is applied as a main device emulating the tropospheric part of a deep space optical Poisson channel characterized predominantly by Mie scattering (fog and clouds) and turbulence effects. This OWC channel emulator also contains self-developed software and attenuator control unit based on external Digital Analog Converter (DAC). Moreover, the response time parameter of channel emulator is examined in detail. Two different times in terms of reaching the lowest and the highest allowed attenuation are measured and shown. Finally, the developed channel emulator is tested and evaluated under real attenuation data. The experimental results show that the proposed method can evaluate various deep space optical scenarios.

The success of ground-based, high contrast imaging for the detection of exoplanets in part depends on the ability to differentiate between quasi-static speckles caused by aberrations not corrected by adaptive optics (AO) systems, known as non-common path aberrations (NCPAs), and the planet intensity signal. Frazin (ApJ, 2013) introduced a post-processing algorithm demonstrating that simultaneous millisecond exposures in the science camera and wavefront sensor (WFS) can be used with a statistical inference procedure to determine both the series expanded NCPA coefficients and the planetary signal. We demonstrate, via simulation, that using this algorithm in a closed-loop AO system, real-time estimation and correction of the quasi-static NCPA is possible without separate deformable mirror (DM) probes. Thus the use of this technique allows for the removal of the quasi-static speckles that can be mistaken for planetary signals without the need for new optical hardware, improving the efficiency of ground-based exoplanet detection. In our simulations, we explore the behavior of the Frazin Algorithm (FA) and the dependence of its convergence to an accurate estimate on factors such as Strehl ratio, NCPA strength, and number of algorithm search basis functions. We then apply this knowledge to simulate running the algorithm in real-time in a nearly ideal setting. We then discuss adaptations that can be made to the algorithm to improve its real-time performance, and show their efficacy in simulation. A final simulation tests the technique's resilience against imperfect knowledge of the AO residual phase, motivating an analysis of the feasibility of using this technique in a real closed-loop Extreme AO system such as SCExAO or MagAO-X, in terms of computational complexity and the accuracy of the estimated quasi-static NCPA correction.

The Optimal optical Coronagraph Workshop at the Lorentz Center in September 2017 in Leiden, the Netherlands gathered a diverse group of 30 researchers working on exoplanet instrumentation to stimulate the emergence and sharing of new ideas. This contribution is the final part of a series of three papers summarizing the outcomes of the workshop, and presents an overview of novel optical technologies and systems that are implemented or considered for high-contrast imaging instruments on both ground-based and space telescopes. The overall objective of high contrast instruments is to provide direct observations and characterizations of exoplanets at contrast levels as extreme as 10(-)(10). We list shortcomings of current technologies, and identify opportunities and development paths for new technologies that enable quantum leaps in performance. Specifically, we discuss the design and manufacturing of key components like advanced deformable mirrors and coronagraphic optics, and their amalgamation in "adaptive coronagraph" systems. Moreover, we discuss highly integrated system designs that combine contrast-enhancing techniques and characterization techniques (like high-resolution spectroscopy) while minimizing the overall complexity. Finally, we explore extreme implementations using all-photonics solutions for ground-based telescopes and dedicated huge apertures for space telescopes.

optical Engineering + Application conference in 2016 had only few reports dedicated to high-accuracy position control systems for optical complexes. However, at spie optics + Photonics Exhibition 2016 dozens of companies offered such projects. In that respect, this report may be of interest for academic community. The main method for assessment of performance of automatic control systems is assessment of stability of a system as it allows the evaluation of dynamics and accuracy as well as the method for additional adjustment and technological capacity of the whole complex comprising the system. As a rule, complex systems do not reduce to linear systems or other known variants, so their analysis is normally based on modeling or simplified calculation. In the suggested paper the known criterion of stability for non-linear systems by Popov involves not frequency locus of linear part, but logarithmic frequency characteristics of the system, including non-linear frequency characteristics. It allows the development of conditions of stability and methods of adjustment for such complex systems as servo drives with non-rigid mechanics and alternating-current systems which cannot be analyzed with the help of known methods. In the systems where the stated methods are used accuracy and speed performance are increased fivefold at an average. All theoretical calculations are confirmed by experiments and modeling.

Infrared scene projector is essential and standard equipment for training and testing IR threat detection systems including missile warning systems and hostile fire indicators. DMD as one of the scene generator used in IRSP has performed several attractive features including high spatial resolution, high framerates, no dead pixel and excellent uniformity. In this paper we proposed a new structure of DMD based IRSP. We use a field lens and a mirror as separator to achieve a wide field-of-view optical system design. Since the field lens is a part of the illumination path as well as projection path, it brings several challenges to the optical system design. In this approach we detailed analyze the design method and perform test equipment and facilities we developed.

Recently, optical materials have been developed by Schott and NRL to improve material selection in the SWIR, MWIR, and LWIR wavelength regions. In addition, new multiband detectors are reaching maturity, leading to a natural push for common aperture lens systems. Detectors that can span the SWIR/MWIR, MWIR/LWIR or SWIR/MWIR/LWIR wavelengths regions will require complex optical systems to effectively utilize their full potential. designing common aperture wide-band systems that are both achromatized and passively athermal, especially while maintaining SWAP-c (size, weight, power and cost), poses significant challenges. Through use of the updated gamma v-v diagram, which provides guidance on material combinations that both achromatize and athermalize, part of that challenge is reduced. This updated gamma v-v diagram uses instantaneous Abbe number and peak wavelength. The instantaneous Abbe number is a function of wavelength and is the scaled reciprocal of the instantaneous dispersion. The instantaneous Abbe number is defined at the peak wavelength, which occurs when the second derivative of the index of refraction goes to zero. Three examples will be presented using this updated athermal/achromatic glass map to demonstrate its effectiveness. These design examples will include a SWIR/MWIR design, a MWIR/LWIR design and, a SWIR/MWIR/LWIR design.

Development of laser systems requires optical components with high performance, and a high-precision double-beam laser photometer was designed and established to measure the optical performance at 1064nm. Double beam design and lock-in technique was applied to decrease the impact of light energy instability and electric noise. Pairs of samples were placed symmetrically to eliminate beam displacement, and laser scattering imaging technique was applied to determine the influence of surface defect on the optical performance. Based on the above techniques, transmittance and reflection of pairs of optics were obtained, and the measurement precision was improved to 0.06%. Different types of optical loss, such as total loss, volume loss, residual reflection and surface scattering loss, were obtained from the transmittance and reflection measurement of samples with different thickness. Comparison of optical performance of the test points with and without surface defects, the influence of surface defects on optical performance was determined. The optical performance of Nd-glass at 1064nm were measured as an example. Different types of optical loss and the influence of surface defects on the optical loss was determined.

High-resolution vehicle headlamps represent a future-oriented technology that can be used to increase traffic safety and driving comfort. As a further development to the current Matrix Beam headlamps, LED-based pixel light systems enable ideal lighting functions (e.g. projection of navigation information onto the road) to be activated in any given driving scenario. Moreover, compared to other light-modulating elements such as DMDs and LCDs, instantaneous LED on-off toggling provides a decisive advantage in efficiency. To generate highly individualized light distributions for automotive applications, a number of approaches using an LED array may be pursued. One approach is to vary the LED density in the array so as to output the desired light distribution. Another notable approach makes use of an equidistant arrangement of the individual LEDs together with distortion optics to formulate the desired light distribution. The optical system adjusts the light distribution in a manner that improves resolution and increases luminous intensity of the desired area. An efficient setup for pixel generation calls for one lens per LED. Taking into consideration the limited space requirements of the system, this implies that the luminous flux, efficiency and resolution image parameters are primarily controlled by the lens dimensions. In this paper a concept for an equidistant LED array arrangement utilizing distortion optics is presented. The paper is divided into two parts. The first part discusses the influence of lens geometry on the system efficiency whereas the second part investigates the correlation between resolution and luminous flux based on the lens dimensions.
