Accurate prediction of the arrival of solar wind phenomena, in particular coronal mass ejections (CMEs), at Earth, and possibly elsewhere in the heliosphere, is becoming increasingly important given our ever-increasing reliance on technology. The potentially severe impact on human technological systems of such phenomena is termed space weather. A coronagraph is arguably the instrument that provides the earliest definitive evidence of CME eruption;from a vantage point on or near the Sun-Earth line, a coronagraph can provide near-definitive identification of an Earth-bound CME. Currently, prediction of CME arrival is critically dependent on ageing science coronagraphs whose design and operation were not optimized for space weather services. We describe the early stages of the conceptual design of SCOPE (the Solar Coronagraph for OPErations), optimized to support operational space weather services. © 2017 spie.

Deployable optics have the potential of revolutionizing the field of high resolution Earth Observation. By offering the same resolutions as a conventional telescope, while using a much smaller launch volume and mass, the costs of high resolution image data can be brought down drastically. In addition, the technology will ultimately enable resolutions that are currently unattainable due to limitations imposed by the size of launcher fairings. To explore the possibilities and system complexities of a deployable telescope, a concept study was done to design a competitive deployable imager. A deployable telescope was designed for a ground sampling distance of 25 cm from an orbital altitude of 550 km. It offers an angular field of view of 0.6° and has a panchromatic channel as well as four multispectral bands in the visible and near infrared spectrum. The optical design of the telescope is based on an off-axis Korsch Three Mirror Anastigmat. A freeform tertiary mirror is used to ensure a diffraction limited image quality for all channels, while maintaining a compact design. The segmented primary mirror consists of four tapered aperture segments, which can be folded down during launch, while the secondary mirror is mounted on a deployable boom. In its stowed configuration, the telescope fits within a quarter of the volume of a conventional telescope reaching the same resolution. To reach a diffraction limited performance while operating in orbit, the relative position of each individual mirror segment must be controlled to a fraction of a wavelength. Reaching such tolerances with deployable telescope challenging, due to inherent uncertainties in the deployment mechanisms. Adding to the complexity is the fact that the telescope will be operating in a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) where it will be exposed to very dynamic thermal conditions. As part of its contribution to Earth observation from space, ALCATEL SPACE designed, built and tested the High Resolution cameras for the European intelligence satellites HELIOS I and II. Through these programmes, ALCATEL SPACE enjoys an international reputation. Its capability and experience in High Resolution instrumentation is recognised by the most customers. Coming after the SPOT program, it was decided to go ahead with the PLEIADES HR program. PLEIADES HR is the optical high resolution component of a larger optical and radar multi-sensors system: ORFEO, which is developed in cooperation between France and Italy for dual Civilian and Defense use. ALCATEL SPACE has been entrusted by CNES with the development of the high resolution camera of the Earth observation satellites PLEIADES HR. The first optical satellite of the PLEIADES HR constellation will be launched in mid-2008, the second will follow in 2009. To minimize the development costs, a mini satellite approach has been selected, leading to a compact concept for the camera design. The paper describes the design and performance budgets of this novel high resolution and large field of view optical instrument with emphasis on the technological features. This new generation of camera represents a breakthrough in comparison with the previous SPOT cameras owing to a significant step in on-ground resolution, which approaches the capabilities of aerial photography. Recent advances in detector technology, optical fabrication and electronics make it possible for the PLEIADES HR camera to achieve their image quality performance goals while staying within weight and size restrictions normally considered suitable only for much lower performance systems. In the framework of the ESA-JAXA BepiColombo mission to Mercury, the global mapping of the planet will be performed by the on-board Stereo Camera (STC), part of the SIMBIO-SYS suite [1]. In this paper we propose a new technique for the validation of the 3D reconstruction of planetary surface from images acquired with a stereo camera. STC will provide a three-dimensional reconstruction of Mercury surface. The generation of a DTM of the observed features is based on the processing of the acquired images and on the knowledge of the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of the optical system. The new stereo concept developed for STC needs a pre-flight verification of the actual capabilities to obtain elevation information from stereo couples: for this, a stereo validation setup to get an indoor reproduction of the flight observing condition of the instrument would give a much greater confidence to the developed instrument design. STC is the first stereo satellite camera with two optical channels converging in a unique sensor. Its optical model is based on a brand new concept to minimize mass and volume and to allow push-frame imaging. This model imposed to define a new calibration pipeline to test the reconstruction method in a controlled ambient. An ad-hoc indoor set-up has been realized for validating the instrument designed to operate in deep space, i.e. in-flight STC will have to deal with source/target essentially placed at infinity. This auxiliary indoor setup permits on one side to rescale the stereo reconstruction problem from the operative distance in-flight of 400 km to almost 1 meter in lab;on the other side it allows to replicate different viewing angles for the considered targets. Neglecting for sake of simplicity the Mercury curvature, the STC observing geometry of the same portion of the planet surface at periherm corresponds to a rotation of the spacecraft (SC) around the observed target by twice the 20° separation of each channel with respect to nadir. The increased range of manufacturable freeform surfaces offered by the new fabrication techniques is giving opportunities to incorporate them in the optical systems. However, the success of these fabrication techniques depends on the capabilities of metrology procedures and a feedback mechanism to CNC machines for optimizing the manufacturing process. Therefore, a precise and in-situ metrology technique for freeform optics is in demand. Though all the techniques available for aspheres have been extended for the freeform surfaces by the researchers, but none of the techniques has yet been incorporated into the manufacturing machine for in-situ measurement. The most obvious reason is the complexity involved in the optical setups to be integrated in the manufacturing platforms. The Shack-Hartmann sensor offers the potential to be incorporated into the machine environment due to its vibration insensitivity, compactness and 3D shape measurement capability from slope data. In the present work, a measurement scheme is reported in which a scanning Shack-Hartmann Sensor has been employed and used as a metrology tool for measurement of freeform surface in reflection mode. Simulation studies are conducted for analyzing the stitching accuracy in presence of various misalignment errors. The proposed scheme is experimentally verified on a freeform surface of cubic phase profile.

Aspheric optical components are an indispensable part of modern optics systems. With the development of aspheric optical elements fabrication technique, high-precision figure error test method of aspheric surfaces is a quite urgent issue now. We proposed a digital Moire interferometer technique (DMIT) based on partial compensation principle for aspheric and freeform surface measurement. Different from traditional interferometer, DMIT consists of a real and a virtual interferometer. The virtual interferometer is simulated with Zemax software to perform phase-shifting and alignment. We can get the results by a series of calculation with the real interferogram and virtual interferograms generated by computer. DMIT requires a specific, reliable software system to ensure its normal work. Image acquisition and data processing are two important parts in this system. And it is also a challenge to realize the connection between the real and virtual interferometer. In this paper, we present a software system design for DMIT with friendly user interface and robust data processing features, enabling us to acquire the figure error of the measured asphere. We choose Visual C++ as the software development platform and control the ideal interferometer by using hybrid programming with Zemax. After image acquisition and data transmission, the system calls image processing algorithms written with Matlab to calculate the figure error of the measured asphere. We test the software system experimentally. In the experiment, we realize the measurement of an aspheric surface and prove the feasibility of the software system.

The E-ELT M4 adaptive unit is a fundamental part of the E-ELT: it provides the facility level adaptive optics correction that compensates the wavefront distortion induced by atmospheric turbulence and partially corrects the structural deformations caused by wind. The unit is based on the contactless, voice-coil technology already successfully deployed on several large adaptive mirrors, like the LBT, Magellan and VLT adaptive secondary mirrors. It features a 2.4m diameter flat mirror, controlled by 5316 actuators and divided in six segments. The reference structure is monolithic and the co phasing between the segments is guaranteed by the contactless embedded metrology. The mirror correction commands are usually transferred as modal amplitudes, that are checked by the M4 controller through a smart real-time algorithm that is capable to handle saturation effects. A large hexapod provides the fine positioning of the unit, while a rotational mechanism allows switching between the two Nasmyth foci. The unit has entered the final design and construction phase in July 2015, after an advanced preliminary design. The final design review is planned for fall 2017;thereafter, the unit will enter the construction and test phase. Acceptance in Europe after full optical calibration is planned for 2022, while the delivery to Cerro Armazones will occur in 2023. Even if the fundamental concept has remained unchanged with respect to the other contactless large deformable mirrors, the specific requirements of the E-ELT unit posed new design challenges that required very peculiar solutions. Therefore, a significant part of the design phase has been focused on the validation of the new aspects, based on analysis, numerical simulations and experimental tests. Typical results of the optic simulation are images generated on the virtual sensors of various kinds. As a rule, these images represent two-dimensional distribution of the light values in Cartesian coordinates (luminance, illuminance) or in polar coordinates (luminous intensity). Using the virtual sensors allows making the calculation and design of different kinds of illumination devices, providing stray light analysis, synthesizing of photorealistic images of three-dimensional scenes under the complex illumination generated with optical systems, etc. Based on rich experience in the development and practical using of computer systems of virtual prototyping and photorealistic visualization the authors formulated a number of basic requirements for the visualization and analysis of the results of light simulations represented as two-dimensional distribution of luminance, illuminance and luminous intensity values. The requirements include the tone mapping operators, pseudo color imaging, visualization of the spherical panorama, regression analysis, the analysis of the image sections and regions, analysis of pixel values, the image data export, etc. All those requirements were successfully satisfied in designed software component for visual analysis of the light simulation results. The module "LumiVue" is an integral part of "Lumicept" modeling system and the corresponding plug-in of computer-aided design and support for CATIA product. A number of visual examples of analysis of calculated two-dimensional distribution of luminous intensity, illuminance and luminance illustrate the article. The examples are results of simulation and design of lighting optical systems, secondary optics for LEDs, stray light analysis, virtual prototyping and photorealistic rendering.

The proliferation in the number of mobile devices and developments in cellular technology has led to an ever increasing demand for mobile data. The global bandwidth shortage facing wireless carriers today has motivated research for fifth generation (5G) cellular systems. In recent years, millimeter wave (mmW) frequencies between 30 and 300 GHz are being considered as a promising technology for 5G systems. Such systems can offer superior user experience by providing data rates that exceed one Gigabit per second and latencies lower than a millisecond. However, there is little research about cellular mmW propagation in densely populated urban environments. Understanding the radio channel is a primary requirement for optimal design of mmW systems. Radio propagation in mmW systems faces significant challenges due to rapidly varying channel conditions and intermittent connectivity. In this paper, we study the propagation of mmW spectrum in an urban environment. We use a statistical model to simulate an urban environment with diverse building distributions. We perform extensive simulations to analyze the path loss behavior for both line of sight (LOS) and non line of sight (NLOS) conditions for 28 GHZ and 73 GHZ mmW frequencies. We observe that the path loss approximates a logarithmic fit for both LOS and NLOS environments. Our simulations show that the omnidirectional free space path loss is approximately 30 dB higher for mmW systems compared to current 3G PP cellular systems. To address this challenge, we propose using highly directional horn antennas with beam forming for reducing the path loss.

3D printed freeform optical sensors are a different and new approach for optical metrology. Thereby the optical design is adapted to the fabrication characteristics of additive manufacturing. All needed optical elements like mirrors and lenses are reduced to one simple printed sample, which is capable to illuminate a complex shaped industrial part for shaped measurement based on light section technique. Additionally the laser line can be formed on the part in a way, so that no shadow appears - even in the case of kinks etc.. Due to the physical limitations of the printing process and different printing techniques each optical design would present some drawbacks that has to be considered prior a printing process in order to obtain the best results possible.
