Micro system has some restrictions, when optical system have been structured in a multiple style. These affect their applications. In order to solve the problems of multiple structures in the system, new sensors and components are adding in, which is developing the design method and system configuration. Results show that geometrical optics and optical aberration theory as a foundation, the degree of freedom in design is increased without changing the lens weight, size and structure obviously.

We present a homodyne detection system implemented for a page-wise holographic memory architecture. Homodyne detection by holographic memory systems enables phase quadrature multiplexing (doubling address space), and lower exposure times (increasing read transfer rates). It also enables phase modulation, which improves signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to further increase data capacity. We believe this is the first experimental demonstration of homodyne detection for a page-wise holographic memory system suitable for a commercial design.

We report using Inverse Electromagnetic design to computationally optimize the geometric shapes of metallic optical antennas or near-field transducers (NFTs) and dielectric waveguide structures that comprise a sub-wavelength optical focusing system for practical use in Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR). This magnetic data-recording scheme relies on focusing optical energy to locally heat the area of a single bit, several hundred square nanometers on a hard disk, to the Curie temperature of the magnetic storage layer. There are three specifications of the optical system that must be met to enable HAMR as a commercial technology. First, to heat the media at scan rates upward of 10 m/s, similar to 1 mW of light (> 1% of typical laser diode output power) must be focused to a 30nmx30nm spot on the media. Second, the required lifetime of many years necessitates that the nano-scale NFT must not over-heat from optical absorption. Third, to avoid undesired erasing or interference of adjacent tracks on the media, there must be minimal stray optical radiation away from the hotspot on the hard disk. One cannot design the light delivery system by tackling each of these challenges independently, because they are governed by coupled electromagnetic phenomena. Instead, we propose multiobjective optimization using Inverse Electromagnetic design in conjunction with a commercial 3D FDTD Maxwell's equations solver. We computationally generated designs of a metallic NFT and a high-index waveguide grating that meet the HAMR specifications simultaneously. Compared to a mock industry design, our proposed design has a similar optical coupling efficiency, similar to 3x improved suppression of stray optical radiation, and a 60% (280 degrees C) reduction in NFT temperature rise. We also distributed the Inverse Electromagnetic design software online so that industry partners can use it as a repeatable design process.

We present novel immersed grating (IG) based spectrometer designs that can be used in space instrumentation. They are based on the design approach that aims to optimize the optical design using the expanded parameter space that the IG technology offers. In principle the wavefront error (WFE) of any optical system the most conveniently can be corrected in the pupil, where in the case of the IG based spectrometer, the IG itself is positioned. By modifying existing three-mirror based optical systems, which can form the main part of double pass spectrometer designs, a large portion of the WFE of the optical system can be transferred to the pupil and to the IG. In these cases the IG can compensate simple low order aberrations of the system and consequently the main benefit is that the mirrors that tend to be off-axis conical sections can be substituted by spherical mirrors. The WFE budget of such designs has only a minor contribution from the very high quality spherical mirrors and the majority of the WFE can be then allocated to the most complex part of the system, the IG. The latter can be designed so that the errors are compensated by a special grating pattern that in turn can be manufactured using the expertise and experience of the semiconductor industry.

To show flames in the visible and low infrared regions of radiation in the wavelength range from 400 nm to 2000 nm a design of optical systems technical borescope is presented. The proposed glass and technical parameters of the optical system correspond to the diameters of the lens elements and their distance of the borescope for VIS only. The correction lengths and distances of images are approximately the same and also correspond to the mechanical construction of the existing borescope for visible light. To record images in the wavelength range from 800 nm to 1000 nm it is possible to use the classic black-and-white cameras, e.g. OSCAR OS-458. Recording wavelengths in the range of 900 nm to 1700 nm allows, for example, InGaAs camera Bobcat 1.7-320.

3D structured light systems based upon phase shifting analysis are well described in the literature. One of the challenges to obtaining high quality data is the noise often associated with the mechanism to shift the projected pattern accurately. The common methods of realizing a phase shift is to either mechanically move a grating pattern that is then projected to the part, or to move the pattern electronically in a programmable projector such as an LCD, LCOS or other projector. These projectors, often made for office use, are limited by the pixel resolution and the stability of the projectors. Mechanical shifts can be very precise, but require time and the maintenance of a mechanical movement. Other systems using projected interference patterns that use piezo shifters are faster and more reliable, but then can suffer from coherent speckle noise. This paper will discuss a unique optical design using a lens made telecentric in image space and an electro-optical image shifting approach that provides very fast image shifts in a very repeatable and controlled manner.

Aero-thermal simulations are an integral part of the design process for the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). These simulations utilize computational Solid-Fluid Dynamics (CSFD) to estimate wind jitter and blur, dome and mirror seeing, telescope pointing error due to thermal drift, and to predict thermal effects on performance of components such as the primary mirror segments. design guidance obtained from these simulations is provided to the Telescope, Enclosure, Facilities and Adaptive optics groups. computational advances allow for model enhancements and inclusion of phenomena not previously resolved, such as transient effects on wind loading and thermal seeing due to vent operation while observing or long exposure effects, with potentially different flow patterns corresponding to the beginning and end of observation. Accurate knowledge of the Observatory aero-thermal environment will result in developing reliable look-up tables for effective open loop correction of key active optics system elements, and cost efficient operation of the Observatory.

Qualification testing of fiber based laser transmitters is required for NASA's Deep Space optical Communications program to mature the technology for space applications. In the absence of fully space qualified systems, commercial systems have been investigated in order to demonstrate the robustness of the technology. To this end, a 2.5 W fiber based laser source was developed as the transmitter for an optical communications experiment flown aboard the ISS as a part of a technology demonstration mission. The low cost system leveraged Mil Standard design principles and Telcordia certified components to the extent possible and was operated in a pressure vessel with active cooling. The laser was capable of high rate modulation but was limited by the mission requirements to 50 Mbps for downlinking stored video from the OPALS payload, externally mounted on the ISS. Environmental testing and space qualification of this unit will be discussed along with plans for a fully space qualified laser transmitter.

HORIBA Jobin Yvon S.A.S. (part of HORIBA Group) is in the forefront of such gratings development for more than 40 years. During the past decades, HORIBA Jobin Yvon (HJY) has developed a unique expertise in diffraction grating design and manufacturing processes for holographic, ruled or etched gratings.

We will present in this paper an overview of diffraction grating technologies especially designed for space and astronomy applications. We will firstly review the heritage of the company in this field with the space qualification of different grating types. Then, we will describe several key grating technologies developed for specific space or astronomy projects: ruled blazed low groove density plane reflection grating, high-groove density holographic toroidal and spherical grating, and finally transmission Fused Silica Etched (FSE) grism-assembled grating. We will not present the Volume Phase Holographic (VPHG) grating type which is used in Astronomy.

Due to recent advances in electronics, lighting and communication technologies, SMART Televisions (TV) have become more affordable, and are rapidly replacing old-fashioned LCD (liquid crystal display) TV technologies. These TVs are nearly ten times thinner;they include much brighter displays, true-color qualities, at least two times faster refresh rates and smart communication features. While providing such advanced features, lighting has become a critical part of technology advancement. While the backlight unit consumes over 50% of total energy in TVs, light emitting diodes (LEDs) have rapidly replaced the conventional CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) based LCD backlight units due to their low energy consumption. The present study identifies the impact of optical solutions with high-power LEDs located at the corner of the backlight unit on the optical efficiency for an advanced TV system. Various optical designs are created and impacting metrics for novel LED backlight units are determined. A computational and experimental study has been performed to identify the optical-thermal interactions in a tight-space LED packaging for a slim TV. optical modeling has been performed via Light Tools optical simulation software, while thermal modeling was performed via Icepak CFD software. Smart optical packaging resulted in an effective light distribution of minimum 75% brightness uniformity, with no MURA effect problem on the panel The thermal challenge was found to be immense;so a smart thermal packaging was vital. An experimental validation of computational models was also performed. While the target is obtaining a uniform light distribution generated by HB (high brightness) LEDs and reduction of cost by having fewer LEDs, optical structure is found to be very critical in terms of both optical efficiency and pattern design of the light guide plate (LGP), which is an essential part of slim LED TVs.
