Towards the goal of fast, vision-based autonomous flight, localization, and map building to support local planning and control in unstructured outdoor environments, we present a method for incrementally building a map of salient tree trunks while simultaneously estimating the trajectory of a quadrotor flying through a forest. We make significant progress in a class of visual perception methods that produce low-dimensional, geometric information that is ideal for planning and navigation on aerial robots, while directing computational resources using motion saliency, which selects objects that are important to navigation and planning. By low-dimensional geometric information, we mean coarse geometric primitives, which for the purposes of motion planning and navigation are suitable proxies for real-world objects. Additionally, we develop a method for summarizing past image measurements that avoids expensive computations on a history of images while maintaining the key non-linearities that make full map and trajectory smoothing possible. We demonstrate results with data from a small, commercially-available quad-rotor flying in a challenging, forested environment.

The Image Perception & Performance conference has not been a track in the spie Medical Imaging Meeting for 40 years, but has been an integral part of the meeting since its inception in 1994 in a variety of ways. Everything discussed at the spie Medical Imaging meeting, whether overtly discussed or implied, relates back to one fundamental idea - developing better tools for radiologists and other clinicians to render more effective and efficient diagnostic decisions. Thus image perception and observer performance issues are fundamental to the medical imaging field. This poster highlights some of the trends observed since 1994 years at the spie Medical Imaging meeting as they relate specifically to the Image Perception & Performance conference. The Image Perception track has covered a wide variety of areas, including Methods for Assessing Performance, Mathematical Observer Modeling, Human-Computer Interface & Ergonomics, Eye-Tracking & Visual Search, and Clinical Decision Making. Investigation of the perceptual and cognitive factors underlying medical image interpretation is an important and valuable endeavor that contributes significantly to our continuing efforts to improve the detection, diagnosis and treatment of diseases to improve patient care and wellbeing. Collaborations between medical physicists, workstation design engineers, image processing and image analysis scientists, and vision and cognitive psychologists should be encouraged to facilitate and promote further research in medical image perception so that patient care can be improved. © 2012 spie. We present a new strategy to calculate an optimized refractive freeform surface for illumination purposes with a LED source. The goal of this paper is to present a new iterative flux based strategy to design plastic lens for LED lighting solutions. The new strategy considers the energy emission pattern of the LED and adjusts a plastic refractive surface to accomplish the target intensity distribution. This paper is divided in four parts, a brief introduction to LED systems and reviewing optical design strategies, the method of calculus is exposed in the second part, third part presents the results for a particular refractive optical design developed by new presented algorithm and finally, a set of conclusions about strategy is showed in fourth part.

Free form surfaces allow elegant solutions in illumination optics. A complex function of the system can be achieved by a single optical element. Free form elements are usually manufactured by reproduction techniques, such as injection moulding of plastic. Manufacturing tolerances are crucial to maintain the required function while at the same time yielding the lowest possible price. We implemented a Monte Carlo tolerancing method for illumination systems. Tolerances include shape deviations of optical elements and assembly tolerances. In the absence of standards for free form tolerances and illumination optics tolerancing, communication between optics design, manufacturing and testing is often inefficient. In order to enable a highly automated evaluation of part measurement data to assess compliance with tolerances, we developed an approach to combine information from optics design, mechanical construction, manufacturing and testing into one continuous data chain. The research project is granted by the German Ministry of Education and Research.

We did a research as follows. First of all, selected optimum LEDs and mixed it for higher CRI, target CCT and illuminance. The following step is optical module design. Light directional characteristics of dental lighting must be concentrated to illuminate a part. Because This part is oral cavity, The feature of illumination pattern is rectangular. For uniformity of illuminance and clearer pattern boundary at reference distance, we designed it as direct type ( no use reflector) by imaging optic technique. First, Image is rectangular feature, so object must be the same feature with magnification in general imaging optics. But the emitting surface feature of LED (1W grade) is square or circular generally. For that reason, made object as rectangular source with rectangular lightguide. This optical component was designed for higher efficiency by illumination optic technique. Next, we designed optical lenses based on imaging optic technique for image object feature using Code V. set to high NA for light efficiency in this design.. Fundamentally, Finally, This product is luminaire so illumination simulation and result analysis were executed by LightTools as illumination design software.

Students at the school level from grade 7 to 12 are taught various concepts of geometrical optics but with little hands-on activities. Light propagation through different media, image formation using lenses and mirrors under different conditions and application of basic principles to characterization of lenses, mirrors and other instruments has been a subject which although fascinates students but due to lack of suitable demonstrating setups, students find difficulty in understanding these concepts and hence unable to appreciate the importance of such concepts in various useful scientific apparatus, day to day life, instruments and devices. Therefore, students tend to cram various concepts related to geometrical optics instead of understanding them. As part of the extension activity in the University Grants Commission major research project "Investigating science hands-on to promote innovation and research at undergraduate level" and University of Delhi at Acharya Narendra Dev College spie student chapter, students working under this optics outreach programme have demonstrated various experiments on geometrical optics using a five beam laser ray box and various optical components like different types of mirrors, lenses, prisms, optical fibers etc. The various hands-on activities includes demonstrations on laws of reflection, image formation using plane, concave and convex mirrors, mirror formula, total internal reflection, light propagation in an optical fiber, laws of refraction, image formation using concave and convex lenses and combination of these lenses, lens formula, light propagation through prisms, dispersion in prism, defects in eye-Myopia and hypermetropia. Subjects have been evaluated through pre and post tests in order to measure the improvement in their level of understanding.

Enhanced strategies in optical broadband monitoring allow for thin film deposition under rapid production conditions with very high process stability. Recent developments in the field include simulation techniques with virtual deposition systems, to enable a pre-selection of different multilayer designs, and hybrid process control strategies which combine optical monitoring with quartz crystal monitoring. In particular, automated online error re-calculation and design re-optimization are presently in the focus of research to improve the efficiency of deposition plants. In this contribution a developed re-optimization module is presented, and the resulting increase in production yield of complicated multilayer designs is demonstrated by deposition examples. Besides automated design changes directly initiated by the recalculation software, the presented approach also considers supervising functions that stop the deposition run when critical errors are detected.

A wide range of applications in diffractive optics (DO) have benefited from the use of liquid crystal (LC) panels, ranging from imaging applications, both in mono and in polychromatic illumination, in optical signal processing or in digital holography to name a few. These are fields where we have dedicated a large research effort in recent years and here we will describe part of our results. We have studied the design and implementation of apodizing filters in imaging systems, which can be e. g. applied to compensate the longitudinal secondary axial color (LSAC). We have also analyzed the design of diffractive lenses by the generation of phase elements resulting from the multiplexing of diffractive lenses to control de polychromatic point-spread function (PSF). We analyze the use of transmission liquid crystal displays and liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) displays that work in reflection. The later tend to exhibit temporal fluctuations in the phase modulation, which we have analyzed in order to produce more efficient diffractive optical elements (DOEs).

We present the conceptual design of a dispersive X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) beamline for MIRRORCLE, a new compact laboratory X-ray source. This machine accelerates electrons up to 1,4,6 or 20MeV (depending upon the model) in a ring and produces X-rays when the electrons collide onto a thin target. The radiation emitted has a white spectrum due to both synchrotron and bremsstrahlung emission. A substantial part of the electrons are recovered after collisions, and the emitted light has high flux, wide energy spectrum and a large angular dispersion. We have opted for a simple beamline design using a collimator, slits, a curved crystal, the sample environment and a CCD. The beamline parameters (position of the mirror, ray of curvature, slit aperture, reflecting angle, etc.) have been optimized by defining and improving a figure of merit. This optimization allows for room constraints (distances among elements), mechanical constraints (minimum curvature radii available) and optical constraints. Further ray tracing simulations using SHADOW3 have been performed to check all the theoretical results, refine the final parameters, quantitative flux calculations and for simulating the image on the CCD camera.

Almost every aspect concerning the design of modern panoramic lenses brings new challenges to optical designers. Examples of these include ray tracing programs having problems finding the entrance pupil which is moving through the field of view, production particularities due to the shape of the front lenses, ways of tolerancing these systems having strong distortion, particular setups required for their characterization and calibration, and algorithms to properly analyze and make use of the obtained images. To better understand these modern panoramic lenses, the optical Engineering Research Laboratory at Laval University has been doing research on them during the past few years. The most significant results are being presented in this paper. Controlled distortion, as in commercial panomorph lenses (Immervision), is used to image a specific part of the object with more pixels than in a normal fisheye lens. This idea is even more useful when a zone of interest vary in time with dynamically adjustable distortion as in a panoramic locally magnifying imager. Another axis of research is the use of modern computational techniques such as wavefront coding in wide-angle imaging systems. The particularities of such techniques when the field of view is large or with anamorphic imagers are considered. Presentation of a novel circular test bench in our laboratories, required to calibrate and check the image quality of wide-angle imaging system, follows. Another presented setup uses a laser and diffractive optical elements to compactly calibrate wide-angle lenses. Then, a discussion of the uniqueness in tolerancing these lenses, especially the front elements due to the large ratio between lens diameter and entrance pupil diameter, is included. Lastly, particularities with polarization imaging and experiments of triangle orientation detection tests before and after unwrapping the distorted images are briefly discussed.
