Provided that suitable materials are available, novel structuring methods, such as two-photon-3D-lithography (2P3DL) and nano-imprint-lithography (NIL) are promising approaches for the fabrication of organic complex 2D and 3D structures. optical materials based on photopolymerizable resins combined with novel efficient multi-photon photoinitiators can be used for a fast and simple fabrication of p-optical components for MOEMS. The true 3D capabilities and the high spatial resolution of the 2P3DL permit the fabrication of nearly any optical designs from CAD. With supplementary feedback controlled positioning of the laser focus, a material ran be processed at an explicit target position, e.g. on an organic LED or photo cell. The position of fabricated p-optics relative to such devices is determined by 3D sample registration prior to the structuring process. Therefore, the alignment of laser written structures to existing sample features becomes a part of the fabrication process and no further assembly is required. We demonstrate the design and the fabrication of various p-optical structures such as waveguides and mu-lenses for photonic mu-systems by means of 2P3DL. Furthermore, mu-lens masters prototyped by means of two-photon-3D-lithography and their replication via a PDIVIS stamp by means of NIL are presented. In addition, it can be shown that such mu-optical systems can be fabricated in situ on organic LEDs or organic photo cells enabling powerful building blocks for p-optical systems.

The ever-increasing of the large geospatial datasets and the widely application of the complex geocomputation make the parallel processing of GIS an important component of high-performance computing. The paper introduces a two-phase load-balancing scheme for the parallel GIS operations in distributed environment. The paper focus on the parallel framework design and parallel strategy implement of the spatial operations in GIS. Two major aspects of the spatial data partitioning and dynamic load schedule are discussed in detail, declustering the massive data sets into two parts hierarchically: the dynamic share data and the static local data. In the experimental test, we build up the analytical cost model and evaluate the utilize rate of computational power and I/O resource, and analyze the efficiency of the proposed parallel prototype. © 2008 spie.

FTTH networks require implementing a diplexer at each user termination. According to most of the standards, this diplexer detects a download signal beam at 1.49μm and emits an upload signal beam at 1.31μm on the same single mode fibre. Both signals exhibit datarate speed below 2.5Gbps. Today, most of the diplexers are obtained by actively aligning a set of individual optoelectronic components and micro-optics. However, new manufacturing solutions satisfying very low cost and mass production capability requirements of this market would help to speed the massive spreading of this technology. In this paper, we present an original packaging design to manufacture Diplexer optical Sub-Assembly for FTTH application. A dual photodiode is stacked over a VCSEL and detects both the download signal beam at 1.49μm passing through the laser and one part of the upload signal beam at 1.31μm for monitoring. To satisfy this approach, an innovative VCSEL has been designed to have a very high transmission at 1.49μm. All these components are mounted on a very small circuit board on glass including also integrated circuits such as transimpedance amplifier. So, the device combines advanced optoelectronic components and highly integrated Multi-Chip-Module on glass approach using collective wafer-level assembling technologies. For the single mode fibre optical coupling, active and passive alignment solutions are considered.

In order to measure three-axis force, two four-part tactile sensing systems based on piezoelectricity and optics were designed and fabricated. The feasibility and reliability of the two systems were evaluated both numerically and experimentally. A general formula between the applied three-axis force and the four-part tactile sensing signals was developed. It is expected that this formula should benefit the design and fabrication of new tactile sensing systems.

MIRI ('Mid Infrared Instrument') is the combined imager and integral field spectrometer for the 5-29 micron wavelength range under development for the JWST. In March 2007 the qualification and verification phase of the Spectrometer Main optics (SMO), part of the MIRI spectrometer came to an end. In this phase it is shown that the SMO subsystem can provide the necessary performance and withstand the harsh environments of a launch and outer space. In this phase different models of the SMO have been inspected with respect to performance parameters like alignment and image quality and have been exposed to vibration tests and successive cryogenic cool downs. This paper will describe the philosophy behind the verification plan, the chosen test strategy and reports the results of these tests. In addition the paper covers the design of the optical test setup, focusing on the simulation of the optical interfaces of the SMO.

In 1839 Louis Daguerre published his process for permanently fixing optical images, and created an instant need for a high-aperture, relatively wide-field and well-corrected lens. Within a year, an optical design meeting all of these requirements was provided by Professor Joseph Petzval, a mathematician with no previous background in optics. This optical design was revolutionary in that it was well corrected for aberration over a wide-field at the unprecedented speed of f/3.5. As Petzval never published explicit details of his method for designing lenses, the credit for the invention of an aberration theory applicable to lens design has gone in the first place to Seidel, and later to those who developed high-order coefficients such as Schwarzschild, T Smith and Buchdahl. It is the contention of this paper that this has been an historical injustice, and that sufficient evidence exists, and indeed has existed in part since well before Seidel published his derivation of third-order aberration coefficients, to establish Petzval as the original pioneer of third-and-higher-order aberration theory as a tool for lens design.

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) and Durham University's Centre for Advanced Instrumentation (CfAI) have progressed the 'Standard Platform for Adaptive optics Real-Time Applications' (SpartA) to a preliminary design which successfully passed review in July 07. SpartA's Real-Time Control box contains a mixture of processors, Digital Signal Processors and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA). The card selected in the design to host SpartA's FPGA based Wavefront Processing Unit (WPU) is the VMETRO dual processor, dual FPGA VPF1 board. CfAl benchmarked this card along with the VMETRO Zero Latency Switch Card to assess their suitability for the SpartA design. The VPF1 benchmark tests summarised in this paper includes: transfering data between FPGAs, between the FPGAs and PPCs (with and without the TransComm controller), from PPC to an external host via Ethernet and finally from the FPGA optical transceiver using CfAI's Serial Front Panel Data Port (sFPDP) core. Results show that the VPF1 is suitable to use as a WPU host card as the measured 280 MB/s FGPA to PPC TransComm data rates easily cope with SpartA's maximum requirement of 30 MB/s. Using the VPFl as a "back-end" controller introduces a latency of 17 mu s, which is greater than the original requirements of 12 mu s but still acceptable. The conclusion of the benchmarking tests and the design review is that the VPF1 and Zero Latency Switch have been selected for use in SpartA.

A new tactical airborne multicolor missile warning testbed was developed and fielded as part of an Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) initiative focusing on clutter and missile signature measurements for algorithm development. Multicolor discrimination is one of the most effective ways of improving the performance of infrared missile warning sensors, particularly for heavy clutter situations. Its utility has been demonstrated in multiple fielded sensors. Traditionally, multicolor discrimination has been performed in the mid-infrared, 3-5 mu m band, where the molecular emission of CO and CO2 characteristic of a combustion process is readily distinguished from the continuum of a black body radiator. Current infrared warning sensor development is focused on near infrared (NIR) staring mosaic detector arrays that provide similar spectral discrimination in different bands to provide a cost effective and mechanically simpler system. This, in turn, has required that multicolor clutter data be collected for both analysis and algorithm development. The developed sensor test bed is a multi-camera system 1004x1004 FPA coupled with optimized filters integrated with the optics. The collection portion includes a ruggedized field-programmable gate array processor coupled with with an integrated controller/tracker and fast disk array capable of real-time processing and collection of up to 60 full frames per second. This configuration allowed the collection and real-time processing of temporally correlated, radiometrically calibrated data in multiple spectral bands that was then compared to background and target imagery taken previously.

As the shortcoming and insufficiency of CNC systems applied in optics manufacturing, a design and application based on Windows DNA-OM is presented. After introducing the prime principles and logic structures of Windows DNA-OM, a specific solution of optics integrated manufacture based on this framework is discussed in detail. In this solution, the OPC(OLE for Process Control) technology based on COM(Component Object Model) of Microsoft company is used for CNC equipment in the workshop, and this could provide a general interface for communication of hetero-structure CNC equipment of workshop and so all hetero-structure CNC can be accessed in a simple way. The experience and knowledge of optic manufacturing is stored and integrated in Windows DNA-OM Data part, this data part can guide optics manufacture. By completing this data part, an optics manufacture expert system can be realized. Then the prime characteristics of the integrated manufacture system are given. Finally this system is proved to has a good flexibility and opening, ease realizing, low cost and high feasibility.

optical multiplexers/demultiplexers developed for the telecommunication industry, at the level of the basic principles, perform essentially the same functions as general-use optical spectrometers. The spectrometer design inspired by the telecom devices would represent an extremely compact device compatible with the manufacturing procedures in integrated optoelectronics and micro-optics. In this paper we summarize our recent results on development of a miniature optical spectrometer. The spectrometer uses a diffractive optical element integrated with a planar optical waveguide. It is designed to provide spectral resolution of at least 2nm in the entire visible spectral range from 400nm-700nm, and simultaneously resolve spectra from up to 35 independent optical inputs. The optical part of the spectrometer fits volume below 10mm(3). The spectrometer is designed for on-chip diagnostic systems, in particular for fluorescence detection of hazardous materials. A device prototype with diffractive optical element fabricated using electron beam lithography is manufactured and tested.
