We report on the fabrication of high-quality microlens arrays on 4 ", 6 " and 8 " -fused silica wafers. Refractive, planoconvex microlenses are fabricated by using photolithography;a reflow or melting resist technique and reactive ion etching. A diffraction-limited optical performance (p-v wave aberrations < /8, Strehl ratio > 0.97) is achieved. Aspherical lens profiles are obtained by varying the etch parameters during the reactive ion etching transfer. The microlens arrays are used for Microlens Projection Lithography (MPL) and within UV-light illumination systems. Microlens Projection Lithography is an innovative technique using KARL SUSS Mask Aligners equipped with an ultra-flat microlens-based projection system. The projection system consists of 500,000 identical micro-objectives side-by-side. Each micro-objective consists of 3 to 4 microlenses. A fully symmetrical optical design eliminates coma, distortion and lateral color. The lens system is frontal- and backside telecentric to provide a unit magnification (+1) over the whole depth of focus. Each micro-objective images a small part of the photomask pattern onto the wafer. The partial images from different channels overlap consistently and form a complete aerial image of the photomask. Microlens Projection Lithography provides an increased depth of focus (> 50 microns) at a larger working distance (> 1 mm) than standard proximity printing. Microlens Projection Lithography allows photolithography on curved or non-planar substrates, in V-grooves, holes, etc. using a KARL SUSS Mask Aligner.

As part of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) First Servicing Mission (SM1), two unique transportation containers were developed to transport two categories of Orbital Replacement Units (ORUs). Both containers were developed to house and protect several ORUs from environmental effects caused by Orbiter ascent and on-orbit events. Both boxes, aptly named the Small ORU Protective Enclosure (SOPE) and the Large ORU Protective Enclosure (LOPE), utilize a unique foam design in which the ORUs are seated. The concept for the SOPE provided for six ORUs's to be transported to the HST during SM1.

An amplitude modulated laser radar has been developed by ENEA (Italian Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Environment) for periodic in-vessel inspection in large fusion machines. Its overall optical design has been developed taking into account the extremely high radiation levels and operating temperatures foreseen in large European fusion machines such as JET (Joint European Torus) and ITER (International Thermo-nuclear Experimental Reactor). The viewing system is based on a transceiving optical radar using a RF modulated single mode 840 nm wavelength laser beam. The sounding beam is transmitted through a coherent optical fiber acid a focusing optic to the inner part of the nuclear reactor vessel by a stainless steel probe on the tip of which a suitable scanning silica prism steers the laser beam along a linear raster spanning a -90 degrees to +60 degrees in elevation and 360 degrees in azimuth for a complete mapping of the vessel itself. All the electronics, including the laser source, avalanche photodiode and all the active components are located outside the bioshield, while passive components (receiving optics, transmitting collimator, fiber optics), located in the torus hall, are made of fused silica so that the overall laser radar is radiation resistant. The signal is acquired, the raster lines being synchronized with the aid of optical encoders linked to the scanning prism, thus yielding a TV like image. Preliminary results have been obtained scanning large sceneries including several real targets having different backscattering properties, colors and surface reflectivity ranging over several decades to simulate the expected dynamic range of the video signals incoming from the vessel.

The MEMS Technology Group is part of the Microdevices Laboratory (MDL) at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). The group pursues the development of a wide range of advanced MEMS technologies that are primarily applicable to NASA's robotic as well as manned exploration missions. Thus these technologies are ideally suited for the demanding requirements of space missions namely, low mass, low power consumption and high reliability, without significant loss of capability. End-to-end development of these technologies is conducted at the MDL, a 38,000 sq. ft. facility with approximately 5500 sq. ft each of cleanroom (class 10 - 100,000) and characterization laboratory space. MDL facilities include computer design and simulation tools, optical and electron-beam lithography, thin film deposition equipment, dry and wet etching facilities including Deep Reactive Ion Etching, device assembly and testing facilities. Following the fabrication of the device prototypes, reliability testing of these devices is conducted at the state-of-the-art Failure Analysis Laboratory at JPL. The MEMS Group is also actively pursuing the rapid, low-cost, space-testing of its devices via a proposed DARPA/NASA/Air Force PICOSAT platform. The space-based tests are expected to provide "space-truth" for critical operational parameters of the MEMS devices that can be correlated to the ground-based reliability assurance testing. Some of the key MEMS technologies being developed currently by the group include a vibratory microgyroscope, LIGA-based devices, micro-propulsion devices, micro-valves, adaptive optics, micro-actuators, biomedical devices, system-on-a-chip, micro-instruments and packaging. Future growth areas for the MEMS group are expected to be in the areas of nano-technology and bio-technology.

A new 3D finite-element gun and collector modeling code, MICHELLE, is under development at SAIC in collaboration with industrial partners and national laboratories. This development program has been designed specifically to address the shortcomings of current beam optics simulation and modeling tools for vacuum electron devices. The program specifically targets problem classes including gridded-guns, sheet-beam guns, multi-beam devices, and anisotropic collectors. In particular, although there are 3D gun codes that exist today, their ability to address fine scale features is somewhat limited in 3D due to disparate length scales found in certain classes of devices. Additionally, features like advanced emission models, including thermionic Child's law and comprehensive secondary emission models also need attention for detailed modeling, and are included in the code. As part of this new effort, an algorithmic representation of a comprehensive model of secondary emission is being developed for this computational tool in order to achieve an accurate beam collection design capability. The basic physics model in the code is based on the equilibrium steady state application of the electrostatic PIC approximation employing both hexahedral and tetrahedral grid systems.

Correlation between computational models and corresponding experimental data of stray light produced by unwanted diffraction orders of diffractive lenses is described. It is shown that the attractive scaler model under Fresnel approximation does not agree with experimental data. The validity of Fresnel approximation for multi-order focusing optics is derived to explain the limitation of the scaler approach. Geometrical models with both coherent and incoherent summation of each diffractive orders coupled with efficiency estimation is used with success. The model takes into account the local diffraction efficiency and also of the number of diffractive orders supported locally by the structure. This geometrical optics model can be used in standard optical design software. Therefore it may be recommended as an additional tool for stray light analysis at the design stage of hybrid refractive/diffractive optical systems. In a second part, the impact of unwanted diffraction orders when diffractive optics is used in visible imaging systems is discussed. Several experimental observations about the use of plastic refractive/diffractive lens in relation to different fabrication process used to build the lens are also discussed. From those observations, we recommend an approach to reduce the stray light produced by the diffractive lens. In conclusion, a serious stray light analysis is mandatory in the design of visible imaging systems using diffractive lenses.

Development of hybrid MEMS devices has demonstrated a need for automatic microassembly strategies. Visual servoing techniques have shown great promise as a control strategy capable of sub-micron precision while compensating for many of the problem that exist in the micro domain, including thermal expansion of assembly devices and imprecisely modeled and calibrated sensors and actuators. This project develops rules for micropart design to aid in device assemblability with visual servoing techniques by ensuring that the microparts can be easily tracked and controlled using vision feedback. A criterion is presented that estimates part trackability based on the visual appearance of the part. This criterion is then used to microfabricate features to improve part trackability and hence, the assemblability of the device. The criterion considers the feature appearance when the part lies out of the optical system's depth-of-field. A Fourier optics based approach is used to simulate the visual appearance of microparts represented by CAD models using high resolution optical systems. This simulation is used to automatically design microfabricated features on microparts. These features are used to estimate the tracking accuracy of the MEMS parts to subpixel levels using interpolation techniques in optical now based tracking. This allows MEMS parts to be assembled with sub-micron precisions using visual servoing strategies. Results demonstrating the capabilities of our design-for-microasembly rules using visual servoing microassembly strategies are presented.

The optical Monitoring Camera (OMC) is a part of the scientific payload being developed for the ESA INTEGRAL mission, scheduled to be launched in 2001. The OMC is an imager that will monitor star variations in the V-band in a 5 x 5 degrees field of view. This paper describes the acceptance tests for 3 sub-systems of OMC: the optical system, the baffle and the cover system. The optical system is based on a 6-lens objective mounted in a Titanium alloy barrel. It has been manufactured by Delft Sensor System (DSS-OIP). The optical performances are verified (spectral range, PSF, MTF) and compared to predictions. The mechanical and thermal behaviours in space environment are then tested in CSL premises. Specific set-ups to measure the wavefront error at 633 nm and the PSF in the V-band have been developed to detect any degradation resulting from environmental constraints. The baffle consists in a 600 mm length Aluminium alloy cylinder surrounding the optical system and including internal vanes. The mechanical stiffness is verified at instrument level. The cover system basically consists of a door mechanism and a forebaffle. The door is closed during integration and launch to prevent the optics from contamination. The mechanism will be operated only once in flight but shall be intensively tested on ground. Specific environmental tests, such as vibration and thermal tests are performed to verify the correct functioning of the mechanism in extreme conditions. The test results are discussed in terms of performances in severe conditions.

MHS is an atmospheric humidity sounder providing humidity profile sounding capability in the 89-190 GHz range. It is a five channels self-calibrating microwave radiometer. Together with the complementary instrument AMSU-A, MHS provides the operational microwave sounding capability for the European METOP series and American NOAA-N onwards-meteorological satellites. The MHS instrument is being developed under contract to EUMETSAT. The present paper focuses on the electromagnetic design and development of the 22-cm diameter rotating antenna of the MHS instrument operating at 89, 157, 183 and 190 GHz. The primary feed network so-called Quasi-optical Network (QON) is an essential part of the overall antenna. It has to provide not only the low-loss frequency separation of the four bands but also the proper antenna illumination in amplitude and phase in order to satisfy the required resolution and high beam efficiency. This equipment has been undertaken by the MHS Receiver Team in Toulouse (Matra Marconi Space France) using state of the art technologies. After a presentation of the antenna concept, the Quasi-optical Network design is detailed and the electrical measurements results are presented. The antenna radiation pattern measurements at instrument level are used to derive the overall antenna electrical performance.
