We have designed an optical component to collect sunlight for indoor illumination. We use a CPC structure utilizing the edge-ray principle to design the collecting part to gather sunlight at many different angles, without a sun tracking system. The CPC structure was designed with the sun condition in Taipei each season. For the maximum efficiency, we define two conditions to evaluate the static concentrator is total energy saving in the visible range.

We report using Inverse Electromagnetic design to computationally optimize the geometric shapes of metallic optical antennas or near-field transducers (NFTs) and dielectric waveguide structures that comprise a sub-wavelength optical focusing system for practical use in Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR). This magnetic data-recording scheme relies on focusing optical energy to locally heat the area of a single bit, several hundred square nanometers on a hard disk, to the Curie temperature of the magnetic storage layer. There are three specifications of the optical system that must be met to enable HAMR as a commercial technology. First, to heat the media at scan rates upward of 10 m/s, similar to 1 mW of light (> 1% of typical laser diode output power) must be focused to a 30nmx30nm spot on the media. Second, the required lifetime of many years necessitates that the nano-scale NFT must not over-heat from optical absorption. Third, to avoid undesired erasing or interference of adjacent tracks on the media, there must be minimal stray optical radiation away from the hotspot on the hard disk. One cannot design the light delivery system by tackling each of these challenges independently, because they are governed by coupled electromagnetic phenomena. Instead, we propose multiobjective optimization using Inverse Electromagnetic design in conjunction with a commercial 3D FDTD Maxwell's equations solver. We computationally generated designs of a metallic NFT and a high-index waveguide grating that meet the HAMR specifications simultaneously. Compared to a mock industry design, our proposed design has a similar optical coupling efficiency, similar to 3x improved suppression of stray optical radiation, and a 60% (280 degrees C) reduction in NFT temperature rise. We also distributed the Inverse Electromagnetic design software online so that industry partners can use it as a repeatable design process.

The Gemini(b) Multi-Object Spectrographs (GMOS)(1) will exploit the excellent delivered image quality of the Gemini 8-metre telescopes. An integral part of the GMOS optical design is the On-Instrument Wavefront Sensor (OIWFS). The OIWFS measures image tip-tilt and focus (TTF) information and feeds this back to the telescope's active and adaptive optics systems. Since GMOS is Cassegrain mounted, the OIWFS was designed to be insensitive to the varying gravity vector as the telescope tracks. The OIWFS utilizes a two-rotational-axis robotic platform to position the pickoff optics within the telescope field. The mechanical design, optics, kinematics and an analysis of the optical measurement error due to mechanical flexure of the OIWFS are presented.

SIGHT (Sharpening Images using Guidestars on the Hale Telescope) is an innovative concept for an integrated image sharpening system for the 200" (5.08m) diameter Hale Telescope at Palomar Observatory. When commissioned in 2023, SIGHT will be available for use with any single-object (< 30 arcsec field of view) Cassegrain instrument, for the first-time providing AO compensation spanning the wavelength range 360 nm - 1000 nm with 100% sky coverage. SIGHT is unique in several aspects including that it uses open-loop wavefront correction, UV Rayleigh laser guide star (RLGS) on a 5m aperture, and a novel laser generalized-optical Differentiation Wavefront Sensor (LODWFS). The LODWFS provides a large, lineary dynamic range of wavefront phase measurement. Our wavefront sensor design uses five lenses, a KDP Pockels Cell as a fast optical shutter, two Wollaston prisms, and a custom liquid crystal polarization rotation mask. Simulation results of its performance show promising characteristics including little to no aliasing noise. In this proceeding, we show the design of the LODWFS, and the results of its laboratory component characterization.

As lighting has diversified across many applications, optical designers have been challenged to produce application-specific optical systems. For an instance where multiple beam distributions are required in an application, instead of making individual lenses catering to different beam shapes, it would be beneficial to create a single optic that can be used with different LED source positioning. Hence, this study proposes a method of positioning LEDs in a fixture to achieve multiple beam patterns using a fixed lens design. Through ray-tracing analysis, we showed that different beam distributions could be obtained by changing the LED position in a refractive lens array. The experimental study was conducted with a 3D-printed lens to validate the model. The results confirm the possibility of creating a single fixed lens to achieve multiple beam distributions via different LED positioning. The proposed novel method can replace the expensive and cumbersome process of developing separate lenses for each beam distribution. Further, our experimental results can guide fixture manufacturers on the use of 3D-printed optics for lighting applications.

In 2018 the Gemini Observatory was awarded by the NSF a large grant for the Gemini in the Era of Multi Messenger Astronomy (GEMMA) project to build the next generation laser AO system from Gemini North. This new system is tentatively called Gemini North Adaptive optics (GNAO) and will be a flexible AO system that can run multiple types of AO correction and serve as a facility capable of feeding multiple science cameras. As part of this new system the Laser Guide Star Facility (LGSF) of Gemini North is being completely redesigned from a single laser single Laser Guide Star (LGS) beacon facility into a multi-laser multi LGS beacon facility. It will be able to generate from 0-4 LGS on sky to feed not only GNAO but potential future systems as well. The LGSF consists of 3 main components, 589 nm sodium lasers, a set of free space beam transfer optics, and Laser Launch Telescopes (LLT). The sodium lasers and the LLT are contracted out to external vendors while the beam transfer optics are being designed and built in house. The new beam transfer optics are called the Beam Expander and Control Node (BEaCoN) and function as the link between the two contracted products. Within the BEaCoN the laser beam is split, expanded, and steered before being injected into the LLT. This report covers the design and analysis of the BEaCoN optical bench.

Free form surfaces allow elegant solutions in illumination optics. A complex function of the system can be achieved by a single optical element. Free form elements are usually manufactured by reproduction techniques, such as injection moulding of plastic. Manufacturing tolerances are crucial to maintain the required function while at the same time yielding the lowest possible price. We implemented a Monte Carlo tolerancing method for illumination systems. Tolerances include shape deviations of optical elements and assembly tolerances. In the absence of standards for free form tolerances and illumination optics tolerancing, communication between optics design, manufacturing and testing is often inefficient. In order to enable a highly automated evaluation of part measurement data to assess compliance with tolerances, we developed an approach to combine information from optics design, mechanical construction, manufacturing and testing into one continuous data chain. The research project is granted by the German Ministry of Education and Research.

Since the attempted shoot down of an Israeli airliner departing from Mombasa, Kenya in November of 2002, there has been heightened concern that Al Qaeda, or other terrorist factions, will use shoulder-fired heat seeking missiles as part of their tactics. These weapons, known more formally as man-portable air defense systems, or MANPADS, have been widely proliferated, are easy to conceal and deploy, and can be purchased on the black market for as little as $10,000. Recognizing that MANPADS pose a potential threat to commercial airplanes throughout the world, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is executing a system design and development (SDD) program to evaluate the viability of missile countermeasures that would be installed on commercial airplanes. This paper provides an overview of the MANPADS threat, a discussion of associated countermeasure requirements for systems installed on commercial airplanes, and a description of a laser countermeasure system that is being prototyped and demonstrated as part of the DHS Counter-MANPADS program.

In this article, we describe the current status of the development of TROIA* a pyramid wavefront sensor based adaptive optics system designed for DAG, a new 4 m telescope located in Eastern Anatolia, Turkey. The wavefront uses a no-noise electron-multiplied CCD camera, and the deformable mirror has a large actuators density, allowing coronagraphic science in one hand, but also system optimization for low light level or bad seeing conditions thanks to the versatility of the P-WFS. We describe the optical design, the mounting and alignment procedure and our loop control concept. Closed loop results are described, showing that while there are still many issues to fix before the sky version, the system behaves as expected.
