The first light instrument on the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) project will be the InfraRed Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). The IRIS On-Instrument Wavefront Sensor (OIWFS) provides diffraction limited wavefront sensing - in both tip/tilt and tip/tilt/focus modes - to NFIRAOS (Narrow Field InfraRed Adaptive optics System). As part of the final design phase, we have further developed the optical and mechanical designs. We present recent changes to the optical design and the resulting performance and tolerance analysis. Changes include decreasing the field of view to 1.5x1.5 arcseconds (square) and moving the field lens to reduce vignetting of the science image. The mechanical design is being updated with more detail for the optical mounts. We present here example mounts and associated analyses and our plans for future prototyping.

High-resolution vehicle headlamps represent a future-oriented technology that can be used to increase traffic safety and driving comfort. As a further development to the current Matrix Beam headlamps, LED-based pixel light systems enable ideal lighting functions (e.g. projection of navigation information onto the road) to be activated in any given driving scenario. Moreover, compared to other light-modulating elements such as DMDs and LCDs, instantaneous LED on-off toggling provides a decisive advantage in efficiency. To generate highly individualized light distributions for automotive applications, a number of approaches using an LED array may be pursued. One approach is to vary the LED density in the array so as to output the desired light distribution. Another notable approach makes use of an equidistant arrangement of the individual LEDs together with distortion optics to formulate the desired light distribution. The optical system adjusts the light distribution in a manner that improves resolution and increases luminous intensity of the desired area. An efficient setup for pixel generation calls for one lens per LED. Taking into consideration the limited space requirements of the system, this implies that the luminous flux, efficiency and resolution image parameters are primarily controlled by the lens dimensions. In this paper a concept for an equidistant LED array arrangement utilizing distortion optics is presented. The paper is divided into two parts. The first part discusses the influence of lens geometry on the system efficiency whereas the second part investigates the correlation between resolution and luminous flux based on the lens dimensions.

To show flames in the visible and low infrared regions of radiation in the wavelength range from 400 nm to 2000 nm a design of optical systems technical borescope is presented. The proposed glass and technical parameters of the optical system correspond to the diameters of the lens elements and their distance of the borescope for VIS only. The correction lengths and distances of images are approximately the same and also correspond to the mechanical construction of the existing borescope for visible light. To record images in the wavelength range from 800 nm to 1000 nm it is possible to use the classic black-and-white cameras, e.g. OSCAR OS-458. Recording wavelengths in the range of 900 nm to 1700 nm allows, for example, InGaAs camera Bobcat 1.7-320.

The system of AR became very popular for educational, military, entertainment and other areas. There are many possible variants of organization the optical part of such schemes. The very important part of the system is a combiner, that is an element which imposes augmented image over the surrounding environment. The power combiner helps to increase the eye relief, but in the case of the tilted power combiner, it adds a rather large amount of off-axis aberrations. These aberrations should be corrected by the following part of the system. Many ways of composing the system with tilted power combiner have been considered and can be found in modern literature. We consider special types of aberrations added by the curved combiner and discuss the ways of the correction. We also analyze possible layouts and their properties for using together with FLCOS and AMOLED microdisplays.

The Observational Cosmology Laboratory at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), in collaboration with the University of Maryland, is building the Rapid Infrared Imager/Spectrometer (RIMAS) for the new 4.3 meter Discovery Channel Telescope (DCT). The instrument is designed to observe gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows following their initial detection by the Swift satellite. RIMAS will operate in the near infrared (0.9 - 2.4 microns) with all of its optics cooled to similar to 60 K. The primary optical design includes a collimator lens assembly, a dichroic dividing the wavelength coverage into the "YJ band" and "HK band" optical arms, and camera lens assemblies for each arm. Additionally, filters and dispersive elements are attached to wheels positioned prior to each arm's camera, allowing the instrument to quickly change from its imaging modes to spectroscopic modes. optics have also been designed to image the sky surrounding spectroscopic slits to help observers pass light from target sources through these slits. Because the optical systems are entirely cryogenic, it was necessary to account for changing refractive indices and model the effects of thermal contraction. One result of this work is a lens mount design that keeps lenses centered on the optical axis as the system is cooled. Efforts to design, tolerance and assemble these cryogenic optical systems are presented.

In this paper we present the design approach and measurements of an optical receiver suited for IM-DD systems operating up to 2.5 Gbit/s bit-rate. The receiver is composed by a Ga-As MMIC transimpedance amplifier and a commercially available pin photodiode. The MMIC amplifier has been fabricated and it has been measured on wafer, showing a -3 dB cut- off frequency of 2.6 GHz, stability and low sensitivity to bias variations.

Classical triangulation sensors exhibit a orientation depend signal if the scattering properties of the work-piece are not symmetrical like at curved surface locations. This problem is avoided by rotational symmetric triangulation sensors. Due to this attractive property in a lot of applications such a sensor was introduced very recently on the market. This sensor is based on refractive optics and a special PSD detector, both custom made resulting in high costs. Additionally, the existing optical design approach does not offer an optical layout to start with, thus a good amount of trial and error is required and non-optimal solutions are probable. Therefore, there is great interest for a clear optical design strategy that results in layouts that are suitable also to use low cost commercial available detectors, such as CCD or CMOS image detectors. In this paper such a design procedure is presented for optical designs that use reflecting optical surfaces. Several solutions are depicted and discussed. The designs are not only attractive from the optical point of view and from detector considerations, but also from opto-mechanical design issues. For example designs with only one opto-mechanical part are possible. The resulting optical designs consist of aspherical surfaces which are obtained directly by using only some new relations of first order optics for off-axis objects. The designs are validated by exact ray tracing. These ray tracing results show already very good performance. Nevertheless, it was possible to further optimize the optical designs very efficiently using ray tracing software, thus yielding improved optical properties.

Compared to conventional optics like singlet lenses or even microscope objectives advanced optical designs help to develop properties specifically useful for efficient optical tweezers. We present an optical setup providing a customized intensity distribution optimized with respect to large trapping forces. The optical design concept combines a refractive double axicon with a reflective parabolic focusing mirror. The axicon arrangement creates an annular field distribution and thus clears space for additional integrated observation optics in the center of the system. Finally the beam is focused to the desired intensity distribution by a parabolic ring mirror. The compact realization of the system potentially opens new fields of applications for optical tweezers such as in production industries and micro-nano assembly.

The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) instrument was designed, built, and tested in-house at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and launched to the International Space Station (ISS) on December 5, 2018. GEDI is a multibeam waveform LiDAR (light detection and ranging) designed to measure the Earth's global tree height and canopy density using 8 laser beam ground tracks separated by roughly 600 meters. Given the ground coverage required and the 2 year mission duration, a unique optical design solution was developed. GEDI generates 8 ground sampling tracks from 3 transmitter systems viewed by a single receiver telescope, all while maximizing system optical efficiency and transmitter to receiver boresight alignment margin. The GEDI optical design, key optical components, and system level integration and testing are presented here. GEDI began 2 years of science operations in March 2019 and so far, it is meeting all of its key optical performance requirements and is returning outstanding science.

Infrared scene projector is essential and standard equipment for training and testing IR threat detection systems including missile warning systems and hostile fire indicators. DMD as one of the scene generator used in IRSP has performed several attractive features including high spatial resolution, high framerates, no dead pixel and excellent uniformity. In this paper we proposed a new structure of DMD based IRSP. We use a field lens and a mirror as separator to achieve a wide field-of-view optical system design. Since the field lens is a part of the illumination path as well as projection path, it brings several challenges to the optical system design. In this approach we detailed analyze the design method and perform test equipment and facilities we developed.
