Visibility-driven PET-CT visualisation with region of interest (ROI) segmentation

Multi-modality (MM) positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) visualises biological and physiological functions (from PET) as region of interests (ROIs) within a higher resolution anatomical reference frame (from CT). The need to efficiently assess and assimilate the information from these co-aligned volumes simultaneously has stimulated new visualisation techniques that combine 3D volume rendering with interactive transfer functions to enable efficient manipulation of these volumes. However, in typical MM volume rendering visualisation, the transfer functions for the volumes are manipulated in isolation with the resulting volumes being fused, thus failing to exploit the spatial correlation that exists between the aligned volumes. Such lack of feedback makes MM transfer function manipulation complex and time consuming. Further, transfer function alone is often insufficient to select the ROIs when they have similar voxel properties to those of non-relevant regions. In this study, we propose a new ROI-based MM visibility-driven transfer function (m (2)-vtf) for PET-CT visualisation. We present a novel 'visibility' metric, a fundamental optical property that represents how much of the ROIs are visible to the users, and use it to measure the visibility of the ROIs in PET in relation to how it is affected by transfer function manipulations to its counterpart CT. To overcome the difficulty in ROI selection, we provide an intuitive ROI selection tool based on automated PET segmentation. We further present a MM transfer function automation where the visibility metrics from the PET ROIs are used to automate its CT's transfer function. Our GPU implementation achieved an interactive visualisation of PET-CT with efficient and intuitive transfer function manipulations.

Glossopticon is a Virtual Reality (VR)-based information visualisation system that presents heritage audio recordings in the archival linguistic data of the Pacific and Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures (PARADISEC) collection. This paper will outline the project, the way it has used VR to visualise information and how it has been used on multiple levels from public exhibition piece, to research tool and in doing so provides an exemplar of the notion of the collaborative, interdisciplinary project as a basic unit of scholarly investigation within the digital humanities.

Tables of values rarely provide enough information to make deep understandings about the underlying data. For millennia, charts, graphs, illustrations and diagrams have been used to visualise the underlying structure of correlated data. This paper demonstrates in brief how diagrams can be used to visualise complex interrelationships using Structural Equation Modeling of IQ.

This paper takes an information visualization perspective to visual representations in the general SOM paradigm. This involves viewing SOM-based visualizations through the eyes of Bertin's and Tufte's theories on data graphics. The regular grid shape of the Self-Organizing Map (SOM), while being a virtue for linking visualizations to it, restricts representation of cluster structures. From the viewpoint of information visualization, this paper provides a general, yet simple, solution to projection-based coloring of the SOM that reveals structures. First, the proposed color space is easy to construct and customize to the purpose of use, while aiming at being perceptually correct and informative through two separable dimensions. Second, the coloring method is not dependent on any specific method of projection, but is rather modular to fit any objective function suitable for the task at hand. The cluster coloring is illustrated on two datasets: the iris data, and welfare and poverty indicators. © 2013 IEEE.

Image compression has many applications. For example, it is an important step for distributed and network based pattern recognition. For real time object recognition or reconstruction, image compression can greatly reduce the image size, and hence increase the processing speed and enhance performance. Fractal image compression is a relatively recent image compression method. Its basic idea is to represent images as a fixed point of a contractive Iterated Function System (IFS). Spiral Architecture (SA) is a novel image structure on which images are displayed as a collection of hexagonal pixels. The efficiency and accuracy of image processing on SA have been demonstrated in many recently published papers. We have shown the existence of contractive IFS's through the construction of a Complete Metric Space on SA. The selection of range and domain blocks for fractal image compression is highly related to the uniform image separation specific to SA. In this paper, we will review the current research work on fractal image compression based on SA. We will compare the results obtained on SA and the traditional square structure in terms of compression ratio and PSNR. © 2006 IEEE.

Traditional maps are one of the oldest way to express relevant information on a locality base, as synthetic representations of reality. The traditional visualization theory of maps and the related principles used to structure spatial information can inspire the modelling of new solutions in the field of information management in web application. But, the fast and generalized spreading of digital maps, and the related production of geo-localized social media is not followed by a deep integration of map in web applications, preventing the effectiveness of digital maps in solving pressing issues like aggregation, retrieval, recommendation and presentation of spatial media. Through the analysis of key concepts of maps, this contribution addresses the foundations of map-based applications, discussing the limits of current approaches and introducing new opportunities based on deep integration between maps and applications.

By offering more detail and precision, large data sets can provide greater insights to researchers than small data sets. However, these data sets require greater computing resources to view and manage. Remote visualization techniques allow the use of computers that cannot be operated locally. The Semotus Visum framework applies a high-performance client-server paradigm to the problem. The framework utilizes both client and server resources via multiple rendering methods. Experimental results show the framework delivers high framerates and low latency across a wide range of data sets.

Animations of horses are commonly used for entertainment purposes. A realistic animated model must move with a gait appropriate to its velocity. We present a kinematic animation system in which a horse model moves using gaits and transitions based on predictions from Dynamic Similarity theory. A Genetic Programming technique is used to evolve gait motion with dynamically adjustable limb extent. The system is controlled in real-time using a MIDI controller system based around the model's Froude number. We were successful in producing high quality animations of the horse's natural gaits and transitions. © The Eurographics Association 2010.

This paper presents a complete procedural 3D modelling solution for mobile devices, called Virtual City Maker, based on scripting algorithms allowing for both the automatic and also semi-automatic creation of photorealistic quality virtual urban content. The input data used include the combination of aerial images, GIS data, 2D ground maps and terrestrial photographs grouped with a user-friendly customized interface which permits for the automatic and interactive generation of large-scale, accurate, georeferenced and fullytextured 3D virtual city content. This content can be specially optimized for use with mobile devices but also with navigational tasks in mind. Moreover, a user-centred mobile virtual reality (VR) visualisation and interaction tool operating on PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) for pedestrian navigation is also discussed. This engine supports the import and display of various navigational file formats (2D and 3D) and also includes a comprehensive front-end user-friendly graphical user interface providing immersive virtual 3D navigation to a wide range of users.
