As Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) are becoming more and more popular, there is an increasing demand for new web services and developments. In particular, there is a need of new technologies (often referred to as Web3D) to create and manipulate interactive three-dimensional (3D) environments on the Web. A major problem in this subject is the lack of specialized 3D graphics libraries for Internet, with similar functionalities to those of OpenGL for standalone applications. Although several APIs (Java3D, GJ4JAVA, JOGL, LWJGL, jGL) have been proposed to tackle this issue, none of them has become an official part of core Java package so far. Consequently, it is still hard to build reliable Internet-oriented 3D graphics programs providing the web users with the same realism and interactivity usually found on standalone applications. This paper proposes a based-on-Java framework to develop interactive 3D graphics applications embedded in web pages. Our approach is not based on the development of new programming tools, the emphasis being placed upon the careful selection of already existing technologies (also described in this paper) that provide the best results for our goals along with the optimized design of the workflow. Some applications aimed at showing the potential of our approach are also briefly reported.

CoViCAD:: Comprehensive visualization of coronary artery disease

We present novel, comprehensive visualization techniques for the diagnosis of patients with Coronary Artery Disease using segmented cardiac MRI data. We extent an accepted medical visualization technique called the bull's eye plot by removing discontinuities, preserving the volumetric nature of the left ventricular wall and adding anatomical context. The resulting volumetric bull's eye plot can be used for the assessment of transmurality. We link these visualizations to a 3D view that presents viability information in a detailed anatomical context. We combine multiple MRI scans (whole heart anatomical data, late enhancement data) and multiple segmentations (polygonal heart model, late enhancement contours, coronary artery tree). By selectively combining different rendering techniques we obtain comprehensive yet intuitive visualizations of the various data sources.

In this paper, we introduce our project for "hypothetical virtual butterfly", of which flight simulation of butterflies with hypothetical aesthetic morphologies, and field work which we have done with that simulation process. Furthermore we describe making process of sculptures as an application of real form from drawing sketches. The process to integrate aesthetic hypothetical design materials with physical simulation will be useful for not only butterflies but also any other hypothetical things.

The idea is to perform interpolations with quaternions or quaternionic functions each one of whom represents a movement. We present several antecedents of different methods to perform interpolations with quaternions and other antecedents of the its use considering the fact that they represent movements for example to define surfaces in different ways. The paper is however focused on the quaternionic version of Sibson interpolant on the surface of the sphere where the scattered data are moving vortices of some fluid.

This paper describes an ongoing project to build a computer application that presents Einstein's theory of relativity in an interactive game environment. With the current interest in the use and study of how computer games can help teach and educate, so-called 'serious games', the resulting game is expected to have value for educators in communicating the concepts of relativity to high school students as well as introducing the topic to a wider audience. The focus of this paper is on the initial design and building of an asteroids-styled game and describes features of the physics, graphics and animations, and play mechanics. Directions for future development and studies are discussed.

In this paper, a thresholding technique suitable for noisy background images is proposed. The proposed algorithm uses an improved co-occurrence matrix as feature spaces. The threshold value is obtained by maximizing the relative entropy. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms other thresholding techniques especially on the presences of noise in the background of the input image.

The PDE-based image restoration has drawn much attention in the recent years. In this paper, we first propose two novel improved models based on the Perona-Malik anisotropic diffusion model and the fourth-order PDE model. Then, we use multi-grid numerical solutions to solve our PDE models. Numerical experiments show that our improved algorithms are efficient and fast convergent.

In this paper, an effective method for shape recovery using HDRI (high dynamic range images) is proposed. Firstly, an accurate reflectance map for a reference sphere relating its radiance values and corresponding normals is established, then the set of candidate normals of each target point comprising the same material are found by comparing its radiance to that of each reference sphere point. At last, a smoothness operation is applied to the normals to obtain a reasonable result, and the height values can be recovered. The experiment results show the performance of our approach.
