This paper is concerned with a new technique of curve fitting. The technique has various phases including extracting outlines of images, detecting corner points from the detected outline, addition of extra knot points if needed. The last phase makes a significant contribution by making the technique automated. It uses the idea of stochastic evolution to optimize the shape parameters in the description of the generalized cubic spline. It ultimately produces optimal results for the approximate vectorization of the digital contour obtained from the planar images.

The Xuan-paper modeling, the most basic problem in Chinese painting simulating, is explored in this paper. An effective thickness Xuan-paper model is presented. The important influence of paper thickness to water holding and water transmitting is considered; also the complexity of mathematic solving caused by 3D paper model is avoided. The experimental results demonstrate that the model is simple and effective, and the model can simulate the different quality Xuan-papers by controlling the corresponding parameters. The effective Xuan-paper model establishes the foundation for simulating of water and ink moving in future.

Traditional subspace methods for face recognition, from the original eigenfaces technique to the recently introduced Laplacian faces method, measure the similarity between images after projecting them onto a face subspace. In this paper, we present a robust face recognition system that uses a neural classifier and Laplacian faces method. computer simulation shows that the proposed algorithm has better noise immunity and yields higher recognition rate compared with several conventional face recognition algorithms.

Despite intensive research, 3D representation is still an open research issue in computer graphics. In this paper, we propose a novel B-spline surface modelling technique. Unlike previous work, our approach deals with unstructured point cloud data. By representing objects in a common parameter space, one of the most challenging problems, i.e. automatic dense correspondence between objects, is solved with little effort. Supporting level of detail (LOD) control, our approach is particularly efficient for 3D object rendering. Furthermore, the representation is compact - over 90% compression rate is achieved. It also allows efficient 3D objects comparison and metamorphosis.

At present the most important things on scene rendering in computer graphics are fidelity and efficiency. In order to achieve these goals, a considerable number of applications require a data structure like a tree to manage the entire scene. Searching the scene means to traversal the tree and moving objects in the scene means to recreate the tree, which are very costly but unavoidable process. In this paper, we establish an octree for managing the whole scene and encode the nodes in the tree. Through a simple process of calculation from one node's code, we can get this node's adjacent nodes' code. With the orderly structure of the octree, we have obtained the target that is searching the nodes in the octree and recreating part of the octree efficiently.

This paper describes a three-dimensional extension of a enclosure+connection layout technique, called EncCon tree. The three-dimensional visualization includes layout and navigation. The layout algorithm directly generalizes the two-dimensional EncCon tree layout algorithm to three-dimensional space in which nodes at the same level of the hierarchy are placed onto the same plane. The interactive navigation uses standard three-dimensional viewing techniques which include view transformation, rotation and zoom.

In virtual world, it is always a challenge research issue for an animated human face model to appear natural. In this paper, we present a novel facial animation method for the technique of expression cloning which can directly maps an expression of the source model onto the surface of the target model. Using litter time, our method reuses the 3D motion vectors of the vertices of the source model to create similar animations on a new target model having the same mesh structure.

The construction of a range restricted bivariate C 2 interpolant to scattered data is considered in which the interpolant is positive everywhere if the original data are positive. Sufficient conditions are derived on Bezier points in order to ensure that surfaces comprising quintic Bezier triangular patches are always positive and satisfy C 2 continuity conditions. The first and second derivatives at the data sites are then calculated (and modified if necessary) to ensure that these conditions are satisfied. Its construction is local and easily extended to include as upper and lower constraints to the interpolating surfaces of the form z = C(x,y) where C is a polynomial of degree less or equal to 5. A number of examples are presented.

Underwater optical effect simulation is an important part of simulating natural scene. However, computing these effects is difficult and time-consuming, since light refracts when passing through waves. To address the problem, this paper proposes a simple and quick method for rendering underwater scenes, including the shafts of light refracted by the dynamic water surface, caustics caused by the effects of light and shadows beneath the creatures in the water. The method simplifies the Iwasaki's method to save the computation-time by an eye-irrelative method calculating the intensities of the illumination volumes with parts of intersection points of Iwasaki's. As the experiment results show that our method got a high frame rate with an acceptable quality for real-time applications.

This paper presents an AAW (adaptive attention window)-based microscopic cell image segmentation method. For semantic AAW detection, a luminance map is used to create an initial attention window, which is then reduced close to the size of the real ROI (region of interest) using a quad-tree. The purpose of the AAW is to facilitate background removal and reduce the ROI segmentation processing time. Region segmentation is performed within the AAW, followed by region clustering and removal to produce segmentation of only ROIs. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can efficiently segment one or more ROIs and produce similar segmentation results to human perception.
