This paper presents a type of visibility data structure for accelerated ray tracing. The visibility field is constructed by choosing a regular point subdivision over a hemisphere to obtain a set of directions. Corresponding to each direction there is then a rectangular grid of parallel beams, with each beam referencing a set of identifiers corresponding to objects that intersect it. Objects lying along a beam are sorted using a 1D BSP along the beam direction. The beam corresponding to any ray can be looked up in small constant time and the set of objects corresponding to the beam can then be searched for intersection with the ray using an optimised traversal strategy. This approach trades off rendering speed for memory usage and pre-processing time. The data structure is also very suitable for hemisphere integration tasks due to its spherical nature and results for one such task - ambient occlusion - are also presented. Results for several scenes with various rendering methods are presented and compare favourably with a well established approach, the single-ray coherent ray tracing approach of Wald and Slusallek et al.

Graph layout techniques have been developed for many years, there is a few applying to real world applications. This paper presents an application of applying graph layout techniques in Web information visualization and navigation. Most Web browsers, including Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer, cannot give users a visual "map" to guide their Web journey. An approach of using a graph for Web navigation has been proposed. That is to look at the whole of cyberspace as one huge graph. To explore this huge graph, it is critical to find an effective method of tracking a sequence of subsets (Web sub-graphs) of the huge graph based on the user's focus. Any on-line Web sub-graph should fit in the display window. To enhance the display of a Web sub-graph, there should not be any overlaps between node images in the Web sub-graph.

As Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) are becoming more and more popular, there is an increasing demand for new web services and developments. In particular, there is a need of new technologies (often referred to as Web3D) to create and manipulate interactive three-dimensional (3D) environments on the Web. A major problem in this subject is the lack of specialized 3D graphics libraries for Internet, with similar functionalities to those of OpenGL for standalone applications. Although several APIs (Java3D, GJ4JAVA, JOGL, LWJGL, jGL) have been proposed to tackle this issue, none of them has become an official part of core Java package so far. Consequently, it is still hard to build reliable Internet-oriented 3D graphics programs providing the web users with the same realism and interactivity usually found on standalone applications. This paper proposes a based-on-Java framework to develop interactive 3D graphics applications embedded in web pages. Our approach is not based on the development of new programming tools, the emphasis being placed upon the careful selection of already existing technologies (also described in this paper) that provide the best results for our goals along with the optimized design of the workflow. Some applications aimed at showing the potential of our approach are also briefly reported.

The immaturity of semantic search engines has initiated researchers to apply various novel postprocessing techniques on traditional search engine results among which clustering routines are most conspicuous. While many of these routines are focused on hierarchical clustering, little has been done toward an effective visualization of such data. Due to the richness of information observed in 3D in comparison with 2D (because of its abundant visual cues), we have proposed an intuitive 3D metaphor for the visualization of hierarchical clustered results. Our metaphor is based on fractal trees which are usually constructed by linear recursive algorithms traversing node-link hierarchies. The search results of different hierarchical clustering algorithms shall be visualized as either single-tree or forest metaphors which are user's customizable alternatives in our implemented prototype. In the forest depiction, our approach is even applicable to flat clustered results.

A Web graph refers to the graph that models the hyperlink relations between Web pages in the WWW, where a node represents a URL and an edge indicates a link between two URLs. A Web graph is normally a very huge graph. In the course of users' Web exploration, only part of the Web graph is displayed on the screen each time according to a user's current navigation focus. In this paper, we make use of a fast kernel-based algorithm that is able to cluster large graphs. The algorithm is implemented in an online visualization system of Web graphs. In the system, a Web crawler first generates the Web graph of web sites. The clustering algorithm then reduces the visual complexities of the large graph. In particular, it groups a set of highly connected nodes and their edges into a clustered graph with abstract nodes and edges. The experiments have demonstrated that the employed algorithm is able to cluster graphs.

We present a context-preserving visualisation method for segmented volumetric medical images. A segmented volumetric image contains a number of anatomical objects which are important features to be visualised. Our context-preserving rendering utilises the curvature at the surfaces of the segmentation objects to modulate the opacity contribution during rendering. This results in the areas of high curvature, typically the most important features, being opaque and visible while everything else being transparent.

Employment of robots in manufacturing has been a value-added entity in a manufacturing industry. Robotic simulation is used to visualize entire robotic application system, to simulate the movement of robot arm incorporated with components consist in its environment and to detect collision between the robot and components. This paper presents result of a project in implementing a computer based model to simulate Okura A1600 palletizer robot. The application uses Okura A1600 robot for palletizing bags at the end of the production line and focuses on pick-and-place application. The project objective is to generate a computer simulated model to represent the actual robot model and its environment. The project simulates the robot's first four joints, namely as the waist, shoulder, elbow and waist and focuses on the position of the robot's end effector, regardless its orientation. Development of the model is using Workspace5 as a simulation tool. Two types of methodology are used, which are the methodology for developing the robotic workcell simulation model and the methodology for executing the robotic simulation. The output of the project will be a three-dimensional view of robot arm movement based on series of predefined geometry points, layout checking and robot's reachability by generating working envelope, collision and near miss detection, and monitoring on the cycle time upon completing a task. The project is an offline programming and no robot language is generated.

Since the middle of 1990s, Malaysia has already showed its commitment and emphasis on the idea of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Malaysia's Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) is being developed in order to satisfy the country's ambition to achieve the fully developed status by the year 2020. Recent studies showed that online learning for secondary students had become more established and accepted as a standard way of learning nowadays. Educators are always being encouraged to incorporate technology into their classroom teaching. 3D interactions with multimedia elements relatively allow the learners to learn and grasp the lessons being taught much faster than in a normal classroom. The use of computer training tools where the student can interact with a computer model can give good feedbacks. 3D analytical approach is especially useful in determining the fundamental molecular events using a Web-based, visually-oriented system that allows efficient querying of gene expression. The implementation of VRML is perceivably efficient and effective method for conveying molecular models over the net. In molecular science, 3D impressions and conceptions are elementary in order to transfer and understand further complex structural information. A prototype of an interactive 3D multimedia learning tool in Biology was created in order to provide users with a 3D element multimedia study environment in Biology subject. The prototype contains three main divisions which are the 3DiC, animations and tutorials. It allows users to learn and study about the biological cells and animations in an interactive and interesting 3D environment.

This paper presents a new quaternion-based method to estimate the camera parameters in a single video stream to interpolate 3D trajectory of the moving camera with camera parameters. We assume that the camera looks at three fixed points while translating and rotating in 3D space. To estimate the camera parameters, we get a set of nonlinear equations derived from a geometric perspective camera model. We have a large number of image frames to find each camera parameters while the number of unknown camera model parameters cannot be determined from a single frame. In order to solve this problem, we used interpolation to approximate camera movement in both translation and rotation. This was done using the concept of control node set at the specific frame in the video stream. The camera movement is based on acceleration level control while satisfying physical constraints. The control node is the set of variables used to determine acceleration-based interpolated equation used for data fitting. In this process, we used quaternion to interpolate orientation of the camera. The acceleration-based data fitting problem is solved using nonlinear parameter optimization solver, GRG2. Our experimental results show that this approach to estimate camera parameters and 3D trajectory of the camera moment is robust enough to handle image sequences of a common scene without sudden change in camera moment.
