Traversal algorithm on the multiresolution hierarchy is critical for the view-dependent level of detail system. In this paper, we study multire solution hierarchy traversal for a DAG hierarchy of vertex-split/edge-collapse operations, in the context of a client-server based system. We present a general traversal management strategy that is beneficial for interactive frame rate and triangle-budget control, and is also favorable for the client-server based system. We adapt two commonly used traversal algorithms, linear traversal and priority-oriented traversal, to work under the management strategy. And we also propose a constant-time traversal algorithm. Extensive experiments on these three traversal algorithms are done and the comparison results can be used as a guide to choose the most appropriate traversal algorithm for different system requirements

In this paper, we make the assumption that a shape modelling process can rely on the application of a set of morpho-semantic operators to initial shapes. In this paper, we refer to several researches which have attempted to identify such operators. We will attempt to validate this concept through the analysis of some ''innovative" buildings. Thus, in different projects of contemporary architects, we can find the trace of some transformations (e.g. "twist", "merge", "overlay", etc.) recorded in the final geometry. These transformations have a symbolic representation. A design system based on the combination of these operators could enable the designer to quickly explore a great number of spatial solutions

This paper presents a segmentation method that outlines fractured bones in an X-ray image of a patient's arm within casting materials, and displays the alignment between the fractured bones. This segmentation task is often difficult because the casting materials cause a low contrast and high noise ratio in the X-ray images. A geodesic active contour model with global constraints is applied to this task. A prior shape is collected and used as a global constraint of our model. A maximum-likelihood function is derived to provide feedback for each evolving process. Experimental results show that the method produces the outlines of the fractured bones on the low contrast X-ray images robustly and accurately

Image based reconstruction from multiple views is an interesting challenge. Recently methods of optimisation based voxel colouring have appeared which make use of incremental visibility updates. We present an alternative incremental voxel colouring algorithm in the mould of GVC-LDI, which directly associates each visible voxel with the set of rays in it's visible projection, using ray-voxel traversal as a mechanism for updates. We make some time comparisons using calibrated photographs and synthetic images, as well looking at optimisation based voxel colouring and level of detail. Results show that our method compares favourably to GVC-LDI

In this paper, a new face recognition algorithm based on a single frontal-view image for each face subject is proposed, which considers the effect of the face manifold structure. A human face is considered a combination of a sequence of local image blocks. Then an elastic local reconstruction (ELR) method is proposed to measure the similarities between the image block pairs in order to measure the difference between the two face images. Our algorithm not only benefits from the face manifold structure, in terms of being robust to various image variations, but also is computationally simple because there is no need to build the face manifold. We evaluate the performance of our proposed face recognition algorithm with the use of different databases and consistent and promising experimental results were obtained

In many image analysis and computer vision applications, object recognition is the ultimate goal. This work presents study and experimentation for object recognition when isolated objects are under discussion. The circumstances of similarity transformations, presence of noise, and occlusion have been included as the part of the study. For simplicity, instead of objects, outline of the objects have been used for the whole process of the recognition. Fourier descriptors have been used as features of the objects. Various similarity measures have been used and compared for recognition. The test objects are matched with the model objects in database and the object with the least similarity measure is taken as the recognized object. A detailed experimental study has been made under different conditions and circumstances

Smooth skinning is still the most popular method for the animation of deformable human and creature characters. It has became almost an industry standard because of its intuitiveness to use and efficiency to compute. However it suffers from a number of problems, such as the collapsing elbow and candy-wrapper effect. In this paper, we present a new method, which is able to solve these defects with very little extra stretching computations. The advantage of this method is its compatibility with the current animation workflow. The animator can change the skin weight any way they like and therefore it favours creativity. The aim of our method is trying to retain the realism and computational efficiency at the same time. It is suitable for situations, where real time response is necessary, like computer games. A practical implementation in the form of a Maya plug-in is created to demonstrate the viability of the method

A method is described to reproduce reflection properties at the surface of real objects using spectral images, which are often saturated because of the limited dynamic range of image detectors. Reflection components are separated into diffuse and specular reflection components based on the dichromatic model at 5-nm wavelength intervals between 380 nm and 780 nm for each pixel of the spectral images, and diffuse reflectance parameters are estimated during the separation. To estimate specular reflectance parameters, the Gaussian distribution function of the Torrance-Sparrow reflection model is transformed logarithmically to a linear form, and the unsaturated values of the specular reflection components are subjected to the least squares method. Experimental results with a real object demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method

Arabic manuscripts represent a rich source of knowledge that has been highly underutilized. Huge repositories of historical artifacts are yet to be typeset and published in book-form. Given vast content of these manuscripts, it is important to develop indexing systems that support content-based retrieval from historical manuscripts. In this paper, we propose a computer aided retrieval and indexing system for Arabic historical manuscripts. The proposed system extracts meaningful information (features) that is used in indexing. Some preprocessing steps are also implemented in order to enhance the quality of document images. More than one form of a similarity measure has been tested. The developed prototype system has shown encouraging results with respect to the word matching rates achieved

Tracing the contour of an object in an image is an important problem in computer vision. This paper presents a new contour detection algorithm using an adaptive vision framework. The proposed method is different from conventional algorithms in several ways. First, we introduce a new adaptive tracking algorithm called LR-traversing. LR-traversing is unique as it progressively adapts to the thickness of an edge while tracking the contour of an object with variable sharpness. Secondly, the method employs adaptive selection process that can optimally extract features based on an error metric. By utilizing this flexible run-time technique our method can detect and track object contours in real-time. Experiments demonstrate that the method is significantly faster than other algorithms that can achieve similar result
