This paper proposed a new approach for collecting, analyzing and visualizing co-authoring data of individuals. This approach can be used for understanding the academic collaboration and knowledge domain of individual researchers in a past period through repetitive co-published works. Particularly we extracted the co-authoring data from the DBLP which is one of the largest on-line computer science bibliographic databases available on the Internet. To help users to understand the academic collaboration and knowledge domain of individuals, we developed an InterRing visualizer which shows not only the weight of co-authorship of an individual with other researchers in particular academic year, but also the knowledge domain of the individual that was covered by his/her publications published in a past period

This paper presents a new method for generating non-photorealistic (NPR) facial expression animations. The method consists of two main processing parts. First, a particular NPR style portrait is created from a frontal facial photograph. Facial expressive details, like: expressive wrinkles, fine, creases, even freckles, can be included in the synthesized portrait, which makes it more expressive. Second, with two different facial expression portraits, a metamorphing algorithm using distance transform is utilized to produce the 2D animation. Our morphing process is fully automated, no control point or any manual work is required. Finally, a continuous facial expression animation is produced. The resulted animation is useful in a number of potential applications, ranging from entertainment and education to teleconferencing and psychology research

Recent 3D graphics hardware technologies have made it possible to create visually realistic 3D characters and 3D scenes in real time. And then, the video game has become one of the main applications of 3D graphics technologies. However, behaviors of non player characters (NPCs) in video games are not satisfactory because they are still predefined and then very simple. To attract game players, NPCs should have more complicated behaviors like the human. Facial expression is one of the most important factors for such a humanlike NPC. In this paper, the authors propose an NPC which interacts with the human. The NPC changes its facial expression according to its emotion during the interaction. For realizing such an NPC, the authors implemented a neural network based emotional model unit. By some experiments, this paper also shows that the NPC can change its facial expression according to its emotion like the human

Technology based driver training is still in its infancy. There is a strong need for improved and integrated computer-based screening tools in order to facilitate objective and reliable driver training assessments. This paper describes a system that analyses videos of driving sessions collected by on-board Web-cameras. The system detects and tracks lane markings in order to estimate the relative position of the vehicle with respect to its lane. The system is computationally efficient as it exploits fully the off-line nature of the data. The analysis of the video recording is performed in reverse temporal order. The benefits of this approach compared to the forward analysis traditionally used are an improved robustness and a lower computational cost

As auto-stereoscopic displays offer more and more different possible views, the problem of the size of the data to display is becoming more and more urging. If many 3D images compression algorithms already exist, using various methods, many are not lossless and lead to zones where data are not well displayed. This article details our lossless 3D compression algorithm based on 3D reconstruction of the initial 3D scene and presents some results. We will insist on the description of the coding and decoding process of a number of particular effects, especially the reflection and refraction reconstitution. We will also show an encountered problem called discontinuity of the facets and the way to solve it

Environment maps are extensively used as natural light sources in realistic rendering. We propose a stratified sampling scheme for environment maps by first stratifying the maps into a set of rectangular regions with median cut method, then estimating the contribution of the regions with Monte Carlo integration techniques. In this way, illumination, surface reflectance and spatial distribution are all taken into consideration for the generation of the light samples. Compared with the existing biased lighting techniques, the presented scheme produces unbiased rendering results with less noise and better shadow boundaries, particularly at low sampling rates. The proposed spatial distribution of the samples also helps to overcome the sample-clumping problem in traditional illumination-based importance sampling method. Experimental results indicate that the scheme is fast, simple to implement and effective

Hexagonal structure is different from the traditional square structure for image representation. The geometrical arrangement of pixels on hexagonal structure can be described in terms of a hexagonal grid. Hexagonal structure provides an easy way for image translation and rotation transformations. However, all the existing hardware for capturing image and for displaying image are produced based on square architecture. It has become a serious problem affecting the advanced research based on hexagonal structure. In this paper, we introduce a new virtual hexagonal structure. Based on this virtual structure, a more flexible and powerful image translation and rotation are performed. The virtual hexagonal structure retains image resolution during the process of image transformations, and does not introduce distortion. Furthermore, images can be smoothly and easily transferred between the traditional square structure and the hexagonal structure

Frequency-domain algorithms are studied to provide the composition of each nucleic acid base simultaneously across numerous frequencies and along the base-positions, through Fourier transformation and color mapping of the bases. And also, composite colored scalograms are constructed by continuous wavelet transformation to provide their individual localized time and periodic energy content in a single figure. The visualization of three-dimensional information in the forms of bases, frequencies and base-positions allows visual analysis of correlated structural and genomic information, which can hardly be obtained from the conventional character string analysis. In this paper, a development of automatic signature classification system is proposed. We have presented offline and online signature verification system, based on the signature invariants and its dynamic features. The proposed system segments each signature based on its perceptually important points and then, for each segment, computes a number of features that are scale, rotation and displacement invariant. The normalized moments and the normalized Fourier descriptors are used for this invariancy, while the speed of pen is used as a dynamic feature of the signature. In both cases the data acquisition, pre-processing, feature extraction and comparison steps are analyzed and discussed. Both static and dynamic features were used as an input to a neural network. The neural network used for classification is a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) with one input layer, one hidden layer and one output layer. The performance of the proposed system is presented through simulation examples

The evaluation and comparison of 2D and 3D workspace environments is a hot topic. Much has been said concerning the promise of 3D workspaces but much less has been realised. Part of the problem appears to be the difficulty of developing 3D GUIs with high usabilities and effective navigation mechanisms. Many early environments simulated a 3D office but all suffered from a range of problems, from poor navigation to issues of spatial cognition. Indeed, most researchers now consider an office to be an inappropriate metaphor for an effective 3D computer environment. This paper describes the development of a 3D workspace based directly on the WIMP metaphor as opposed to a desktop or office metaphor. The environment uses rotating transparent 2D windows in a 3D world and presents icons as billboards
