We propose a new method for synthesizing free-viewpoint images from multiple view videos in soccer stadium. The previous method can synthesize virtual viewpoint images at only intermediate viewpoint between real cameras. The previous method estimates only pixel-wise correspondences between input images for synthesizing virtual viewpoint images without a 3D reconstruction. In this paper, we propose a new method that can synthesize virtual viewpoint images at free-viewpoints which are not limited at intermediate viewpoint by reconstructing simple 3D models. To reconstruct the object soccer scene, we perform camera calibration without marker objects because we can save labor to put such objects on the soccer ground. For reconstructing of dynamic regions, we employ a billboard representation of dynamic regions. The position of the billboard is determined by tracking the players. The billboard representation can realize a simple 3D reconstruction and transform textures into the appropriate appearance of the aspect of dynamic regions at virtual viewpoint. We also introduce the choice of optimal cameras for rendering on the billboard. We choose the optimal camera that has the most similar texture at virtual viewpoint. By applying our method to a soccer scene, we can synthesize free-viewpoint images by employing only pixel values of real images

This paper describes a new technique for recognizing speech using visual speech information. The video data of the speaker's mouth is represented using grayscale images named as motion history image (MHI). MHI is generated by applying accumulative image differencing on the frames of the video to implicitly represent the temporal information of the mouth movement. The MHIs are decomposed into wavelet sub images using discrete stationary wavelet transform (SWT). Three moment-based features (geometric moments, Zernike moments and Hu moments) are extracted from the SWT approximate sub images. Multilayer perceptron (MLP) type artificial neural network (ANN) with back propagation learning algorithm is used to classify the moments features. This paper evaluates and compares the image representation ability of the different moments. The initial experiments show that this method can classify English consonants with an error rate less than 5%

Image compression has many applications. For example, it is an important step for distributed and network based pattern recognition. For real time object recognition or reconstruction, image compression can greatly reduce the image size, and hence increase the processing speed and enhance performance. Fractal image compression is a relatively recent image compression method. Its basic idea is to represent images as a fixed point of a contractive iterated function system (IFS). Spiral architecture (SA) is a novel image structure on which images are displayed as a collection of hexagonal pixels. The efficiency and accuracy of image processing on SA have been demonstrated in many recently published papers. We have shown the existence of contractive IFS's through the construction of a complete metric space on SA. The selection of range and domain blocks for fractal image compression is highly related to the uniform image separation specific to SA. In this paper, we review the current research work on fractal image compression based on SA. We compare the results obtained on SA and the traditional square structure in terms of compression ratio and PSNR

In implicit surfaces, implicit blends are important because they can be used to construct a complex surface from primitive surfaces. Among existing blends, blends with a blending range control are applied very wide because they can deform blended primitives locally after blending. However, this kind of blends usually behaves like a pure union blend Min(f 1 ,...,f k ) on non-blending regions. Hence, when they are used as a new primitive in other blends, their primitives always have similar subsequent blending surfaces with the primitives in their subsequent blends. To solve this problem, this paper proposes new implicit blends that can provide parameters to individually adjust their primitives' subsequent blending surfaces, without deforming the original blending surfaces. The proposed blends can provide parameters m 1 ,...,m k to enable their primitives f 1 ,...,f k to behave like Min(f 1 /m 1 ,...,f k /m k ) on non-blending regions and its original blending surface does not change whatever positive values m 1 ,...,m k are set. As a result, in sequential blends, the subsequent blending surfaces of f 1 ,...,f k can be adjusted respectively by varying parameters m 1 ,...,m k . Furthermore, this paper also proposes a generalized method that can transform some of existing blends into a new blend with the ability stated above

This paper proposes a refined Gaussian weighted histogram intersection for content-based image matching and applies the method for number plate categorization. Number plate images are classified into two groups based on their colour similarities with the model image of each group. The similarities of images are measured by the matching rates between their colour histograms. Histogram intersection (HI) is used to calculate the matching rates of histograms. Since the conventional histogram intersection algorithm is strictly based on the matching between bins of identical colours, the final matching rate could easily be affected by colour variation caused by various environment changes. In our recent paper, a Gaussian weighted histogram intersection (GWHI) algorithm has been proposed to facilitate the histogram matching via taking into account matching of both identical colours and similar colours. The weight is determined by the distance between two colours. When applied to number plate categorization, the GWHI algorithm demonstrates to be more robust to colour variations and produces a classification with much lower intra-class distance and much higher inter-class distance than previous HI algorithms. However, the processing speed of this GWHI method is still not satisfying. In this paper, the GWHI method is further refined, where a colour quantization method is utilized to reduce the number of colours without introducing apparent perceptual colour distortion. New experimental results demonstrate that using the refined GWHI method, image categorization can be done more efficiently

Nowadays, as biology has been taught at schools for years, the teachers have been facing a problem on how to get the students to fully understand the human biology. Of course a student can explain what a skull is, based on the books that he or she has read, but does he or she truly know what a skull looks like. Has he or she touched one? Examine it closely. And not only that, the current method of teaching biology is too static and boring. The teachers teach, and the students listen to it. There has to be some way to change this. The learning tool that has been developed is called ''interactive 3D multimedia learning tool in biology - skeleton", took the advantages from the full-grown potential of multimedia and 3D animations. The main goal of this CD-ROM platform product is as a tool that is able to teach the users what skeleton system is, its functions and know exactly how the bones look like in a very dynamic and interactive method. This courseware effectively communicates the subject for teachers as well as students to understand and stimulate their interest in the teaching and learning process. The MLTB-Skeleton contains a lot of multimedia elements, such as text, image, video and audio. But most importantly, MLTB-skeleton also contains interactive 3D models that the users can interact with. From the point of system architecture, this system is design with a user friendly interface that is interesting and easy to understand. Its main function is to teach the users about the human skeleton system in an interesting and interactive way

Computed tomography angiography (CTA) is an established tool for vascular imaging. However, high-intense structures in the contrast image can seriously hamper luminal visualisation. This can be solved by subtraction CTA, where a native image is subtracted from the contrast image. However, patient and organ motion limit the application of this technique. Within this paper, a fully automated intensity-based nonrigid 3D registration algorithm for subtraction CT angiography is presented, using a penalty term to avoid volume change during registration. Visual and automated validation on four clinical datasets clearly show that the algorithm strongly reduces motion artifacts in subtraction CTA. Most artifacts disappear, also artifacts caused by minimal displacement of stents or calcified plaques, allowing a 2D and 3D artifact-free visualisation of the vessel lumen. This enables a quick overview of the whole vascular structure and opens the possibility to the visualisation of smaller vessels

This paper describes the visualisation components associated with a new environment,for the pre-operative planning of total hip replacement. The system has a multisensorial immersive interface (stereoscopic display, several six-degrees-of-freedom tracking technologies, speech recognition and control, and haptic feedback) and includes advanced software visualisation and evaluation modules for both planning the operation and evaluating the likely outcomes.

In this article, we present a novel fast algorithm dedicated to the visualization of scalar and vectorial information lying on elliptical surfaces. As the geometry of the data is simple and not relevant, and inside structures are meaningless, standard visualization methods appear to be not well adapted to our context. Our algorithm is based on map projections, good candidates to unroll elliptical surface around a region of interest, without being computationally prohibitive. It has the merit to project, on a 2D cartographic reference, different views of scalar, as well as, vectorial 3D information lying on the surface. We display results for synthetic and cell wall simulations data.
