This paper focuses on virtual reality application utilising a design approach to produce an interactive prototype for the usage of visualization and reconstruction of forensic research. This involves different levels of 3D simulation and animation resulting in variations of outputs. This proposed interactive prototype would serve as a guide to research the process of developing predefined outcomes of forensic training and archiving particularly in Malaysia. The research looks into developing a virtual forensic lab that serves as an online community of forensic researchers, and has potential to grow over time. The virtual lab also serves as a database library of existing forensic cases that are translated to a digital form. The application also generates new object-oriented environments enabling new conditions and situations that are not based on existing archive cases. This paper focuses on the methodology of the prototype creation.

We present a method to compute friction in a particle-based simulation of granular materials on GPUs and its data structure. We use Distinct Element Method to compute the force between particles. There has been a method to accelerate Distinct Element Method using GPUs, but the method does not compute friction. We implemented friction into the DEM simulation on GPUs and this leads to the real-time simulation of granular materials.

This work deals with a visual-auditory visualisation of dynamic heterogeneous objects represented by continuous scalar fields obtained from quantum chemistry. The research concentrates on complex phenomena modelling and rendering aspects and takes advantage of GPU implementation. The approach uses the constructive HyperVolume for the multi-scale representation of the molecular phenomena. To propose an approach to the visual-auditory rendering, we adapt the real-time interactive volume ray-casting to compute the optical and auditory properties. We demonstrate the approach application for the visual-auditory rendering of dynamic molecular structures.

Three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions of evidence offer great potential in the field of forensic science. They can help in the presentation of complex spatial and temporal data to a non-technical audience. In addition to these 3D technologies, the digital age has brought a plethora of new evidence forms, evidence detection methods, and means of evidence presentation. This position paper describes the previous use of 3D reconstruction evidence in courtrooms. It then outlines the forensic process in terms of tasks and phases involved, and describes the state of the art in terms of digital technology usage. The paper then presents a taxonomy of these phases in terms of a technology continuum. It goes on to highlight areas where new applications of 3D digital technologies could be used to enhance particular phases of the forensic process. This paper does not deal with security issues relevant to the devices discussed.
Heightfields are two-dimensional arrays of height values, commonly used to store terrain or water surface data, and are also commonly used for calculating bump maps. It is necessary to calculate normal vectors for hei...

computergraphics matured over many years and played an important role in the development of engineering products like automotive and aircraft components. The current CAx (CAD/CAM/ CAE) tools use computergraphics extensively, while helping in conceiving better designs with improved quality. Nowadays, engineering product development is being done concurrently and collaboratively, due to the advances in computergraphics. This paper presents a brief overview on evolution of computergraphics over the years. It also attempts to present, how advances in computergraphics, have revolutionized the current engineering product development and what future technologies will offer.

The pairing of a commercial organisation with an academic institution is a typical example of a symbiotic relationship. Commercial organisations dedicate money, time, and often data into a university project with the ultimate goal of a financial return on their prudent investments. Academic institutions welcome these relationships as it supports their research in a field where obtaining funding is extremely competitive. Specifically in the field of visualisation, the culture, visions, and goals of both academia and industry differ in unique ways. In this position paper we explore the dichotomy of interests between the two groups, based on first hand experience and interviews, deriving recommendations for any organisation considering entering into a working relationship with either party.
In this paper, we introduce second order and mixed order partial differential equations (PDEs) for surface blending and present an approximate algorithm for the resolution of the PDEs. We investigate how different ord...

Nowadays, it is possible to characterise, visualise, and analyse urban mobility using digital footprints, in particular, cellphones. However, movement patterns from vast heterogeneous datasets must be parsed, filtered, and aggregated using dynamic and scalable methods. ANTENNA, is a visual analytic tool that depicts trajectories of movement gathered from mobile cellphone data, enabling the discovery and analysis of its patterns. The data is processed in real time, transforming raw records of cellphone connections into trajectories, that can be used to infer mass movements of crowds. The proposed visualisation tool is prepared to deal with different analytical scenarios, presenting distinct visualisation strategies for various ranges of tasks. We conducted user testing with experts from many fields to validate ANTENNA. According to the results, ANTENNA proved to be beneficial for each one of the tested scenarios.

With the advancement of instrument precision, research facilities are generating data at an unprecedented rate. These experimental results are stored in a digital library platform which the contents are later accessible from within the facility or the public. However, the sheer volume of collected data is overwhelming the capacity of researchers and impedes the process of browsing for the desired data. In this paper, we present a concept of Digital Visual Exploration Library (DVEL) based on the confluence of two major research domains-digital library and visualisation-that enables efficient browsing of the growing data within a digital library. We complement the current state-of-the-art textual metadata description by integrating visual exploration to address big complex data, i.e., data of large size, multimodal data and multivariate data. We describe our concept based on use cases from three unique domains: climate research with Doppler wind lidar, X-ray-imaging for entomology research, and medical imaging with ultrasound computer tomography.
