An architecture that allows stereoscopic scientific visualisation to be distributed across the grid is presented. As the quantity of data generated by scientists increases so does the need for tools to analyse and interpret that data: visualisation is one such tool. The architecture presented allows resources distributed across the grid to be brought together and allows scientists to build effective stereoscopic visualisations that can provide insight and help in the understanding of the data being analysed.

This paper describes the visualisation components associated with a new environment, for the pre-operative planning of total hip replacement. The system has a multisensorial immersive interface (stereoscopic display, several six-degrees-of-freedom tracking technologies, speech recognition and control, and haptic feedback) and includes advanced software visualisation and evaluation modules for both planning the operation and evaluating the likely outcomes.

The ability to interactively visualize the complex products of three-dimensional simulations is a key aspect in the validation and verification process of numerical algorithms and frameworks. Computational astrophysics, which benefits from the rapidly increasing computing resources offered by the use of massively parallel mainframes, is a challenging playground to scientific visualization. In this paper, we describe a graphical package developed in the framework of IDL Object graphics. The requirements governing its design are defined in the context of the COAST software project which aims at providing an ensemble of enabling tools and techniques for the development and the validation of major simulation codes. This covers a wide range of applications, including cosmological formation of large-scale structures, turbulences in the interstellar medium, stellar magnetohydrodynamics, and formation of proto-planetary systems. The use of IDL Object graphics provides an interactive and immersive visualization of complex scenes where various fields of different nature are entangled. Three-dimensional scalar and vector fields distributed over regular mesh grids or more complex structures such as Adaptive Mesh Refinement data, as well as N-body systems, can be visualized in a number of different, complementary ways.

In the paper, we bring forward an image encryption algorithm during the process of JPEG compression. According to the chaotic theory of dynamic systems and modern cryptography, we solved the following technique, First, how to generate chaotic sequence having good randomness according to the characteristic that Logistic chaotic systems are extremely sensitive to the initial condition? Secondly, how to create a series of one-way hash being as block key from the chaotic sequences? Thirdly, during the process of JPEG compression coding, how to implement the image compression and encryption by using the block cipher? In the analysis of the algorithm, we discuss the randomness of the chaotic sequence in detail. We also analyze the security and anti-collision of the chaotic hash sequence by several variant methods. The results indicate that our algorithm completely satisfied the security requirement in the sense of cryptography.

The immaturity of semantic search engines has initiated researchers to apply various novel post-processing techniques on traditional search engine results among which clustering routines are most conspicuous. While many of these routines are focused on hierarchical clustering, little has been done toward an effective visualization of such data. Due to the richness of information observed in 3D in comparison with 2D (because of its abundant visual cues), we have proposed an intuitive 3D metaphor for the visualization of hierarchical clustered results. Our metaphor is based on fractal trees which are usually constructed by linear recursive algorithms traversing node-link hierarchies. The search results of different hierarchical clustering algorithms shall be visualized as either single-tree or forest metaphors which are user's customizable alternatives in our implemented prototype. In the forest depiction, our approach is even applicable to flat clustered results.
We present a novel approach to the problem of hairstyle construction from raw surface data such as the ones obtained from surface scans. Our approach is based on a shape matching algorithm that fits individual hair fi...

A general purpose, easy-to-use graphical visualisation tool has been developed to facilitate the display of experiment data. It supports simultaneous or selective rendering of surfaces, graphs and animated traces in a virtual 3D environment. It can accept as many as 100,000 objects for animated replay, and allows for interactive control of viewing position, lighting and other display parameters. The viewer is thus well suited to scoping experiment results, visually debugging data processing algorithms, and presenting complex data. Its principal application is in the visualisation of surfaces and graphs in the entropy analysis of medical and industrial related time-series.
During progressive transmission of 3D geometry models, the transmission order of details at different region has great effects on the quality of reconstructed models at low bit-rate. This work presents a rate-distorti...

In medical training therapy (MTT), the precise execution of the training exercises is of decisive importance for the success of the therapy. Currently, a therapist has to treat up to 15 patients simultaneously on an outpatient basis. Recently an assistance system that can assess both the quantity and the quality of movement was developed. A feedback system models target-oriented recommendations for actions and communicates them directly to the patient. A hardware accelerated visualisation system using OpenGL and GLSL shaders was realised to animate a real-time rendered 3D mesh connected to an extracted motion skeleton. An avatar visualises the error by colouring the body regions with traffic light trenches. The individualisation of the underlying three-dimensional avatar increases the willingness of the patients to participate in the exercises which they perform autonomously without the supervision of therapists.
