The mobile computing domain presents major new challenges for middleware to overcome. In particular the mobile environment is characterised by frequent changes and often poor network QoS. Therefore, a number of middleware platforms and paradigms have been put forward to solve these issues. This in turn though has generated a problem i.e. middleware heterogeneity exists within this domain. As a consequence, mobile client applications developed upon one type of middleware are unable to interoperate and utilise services implemented on an alternative. In this paper, we examine the issue of middleware heterogeneity and propose a configurable and dynamically reconfigurable middleware platform, named ReMMoC (Reflective Middleware for Mobile computing), which allows mobile client applications to be developed independently of the underlying middleware technology.

A novel distributed speech recognition (DSR) development platform, configurable DSR (C-DSR), is proposed for various kinds of wireless devices to remotely configure and employ sophisticated recognizers on the server over wireless networks. Many portable speech recognition applications, such as voice-controlled toys, TV remotes, vehicle navigator and mobile inquiry systems were efficiently deployed using C-DSR platform over WLAN/GPRS by simply configuring their configuration files from client side.

For many years mobile visitor information systems for museums or exhibitions are a topic of research. Research prototypes aim to provide the user with powerful means for organizing his visit and for navigation within the event's surroundings. But today, in real-world applications, we mostly find rather simple tools - mobile guides for fairs, conferences and similar events. In the area of these electronic catalogues, the Fraunhofer IGD Rostock has developed quite successfully a line of such systems. Our experiences with these events have shown that the true challenge of mobile information systems for real-world use is not to provide a large set of features, but to provide an effective and efficient production environment and a suitable and configurable browser application on the mobile platform. We need the integration of the diverse technology fields involved in such applications into a manageable and convenient production tool. With the XyberScout platform, we try to develop such an integrated environment for the efficient creation of such mobile information systems. It aims to provide a suite of technologies for the efficient delivery of mobile information applications that support intelligent and context-aware assistance for real use. In this paper, we outline motivation and concepts of the components of the XyberScout platform and describe some of the new possibilities and advantages for both types of customers of such a system - the organizer and the visitor of an event. Beside the construction platform itself the focus is directed to the user interface concept on the mobile client side.

Bluetooth was designed to replace cables between electronic devices, but it can also be used to build ad hoc networks. In the cable replacement scenario nodes can discover each other using the inquiry procedure. This has been designed to satisfy the requirements of cable replacement applications so that it discovers all neighbours in a fixed amount of time. On the other hand, the inquiry procedure is not well suited for nodes in a Bluetooth ad hoc network, where we found three main weaknesses. First, inquiry takes a lot of time and therefore it requires too much overhead if used regularly. Second, it is very inefficient to transmit data simultaneously with the inquiry. Third, the inquiry assumes asymmetric roles, which is not well suited to an ad hoc network of peer nodes. To resolve these problems we propose the simple neighbour discovery (SND) procedure. We evaluate it using analytical and simulation methods and show that it is configurable in the trade-off between discovery time and overhead. The results show that the SND procedure is more efficient in an ad hoc network of peer Bluetooth nodes than the inquiry procedure.

LavaCORE is a configurable Java processor core designed to support a variety of embedded Java applications. The technology will allow for greater flexibility and security for all space missions. The core technology behind LavaCORE will increase performance, security and flexibility due to its reconfigurable capability. It is ideally suited for embedded applications and to polymorphous computing architecture initiatives. This technology can be a building block for a new class of computing architectures and processing systems that will result in a revolutionary approach to implementing embedded computing systems to support reactive multimission, multi-sensor, and in-mission retargetable applications. LavaCORE will have the ability to morph to match changing mission and scenario demands. This will enable software implementation and malleable hardware optimization to be pursued in a cooperative constraint sensitive environment instead of in a limiting hardware first and software last paradigm. The resulting embedded computing system will enable optimization across a broad range of applications and the ability to react to dynamic mission requirements. © 2002 IEEE.

In this paper, the configurable microcontroller array based on the i8051 processor unit (PU) architecture is proposed. The use of the well-known PU architecture simplifies the application programming. The designed microcontroller PU core has in 6 times higher instruction implementation speed, and in more than 2.5 times clock frequency than the original microcontroller. The proposed technique of mapping the program into configurable hardware showed the 1.5-2-fold hardware minimization. It shows an effective way to speedup the implementation of both computing and control intensive algorithms. Proposed/array is very useful in such applications, where logic intensive calculations, or high speed byte handling computations are of demand. For example, such applications are homomorphic image processing, pattern recognition, genetic algorithms, neural nets, etc. © 2002 IEEE.

Software radio systems are potentially the next main improvement in mobile and wireless communications. The software radio techniques in handset design are facilitated thanks to technology evolution. The capability of such systems to support re-configuration in response to operator requirements is essential if the true potential of mobile communications has to be perceived. Moreover, customer expectations for new applications can be economically fulfilled by terminal and service reconfiguration. This paper will investigate a way to provide a flexible mobile computing and communication environment, where a user can choose between a WLAN network and a GPRS or a UMTS network, according to his current preference. Recently, a lot of IT industries and customers increased their demand for an "always on" elaboration system (computer, cellular, and even household appliances connected to a communication network). UMTS is a standard conceived for satisfying such demand with a proper trade-off. The delay that UMTS has accumulated clearly advantages the standards currently present in the market, such as IEEE802.11/b, Bluetooth and GPRS. An integration of these standards into a single terminal is necessary to avoid the multiplication of appliances predestinated to a short market lifetime and to a limited and uncertain success. This paper also concerns some issues about the reconfigurable terminal for these standards and will provide a possible hardware solution that uses the software radio technology.

The RaPiD project at the University of Washington has been studying configurable computing architectures optimized for coarse-grained data and computation units and deep computation pipelines. This research targets applications in the signal and image-processing domain since they make the greatest demand for computation and power in embedded and mobile computing applications, and these demands are increasing faster than Moore’s law. This paper describes the RaPiD Emulator, a system that will allow the exploration of alternative configurable architectures in the context of benchmark applications running in real-time. The RaPiD emulator provides enough FPGA gates to implement large RaPiD arrays, along with a high performance streaming memory architecture and high-bandwidth data interfaces to a host processor and external devices. Running at 50 MHz, the emulator is able to achieve over 1 GMACs/second. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.
