We have developed a new method other than traditional technique based on ray tracing and optimization algorithm to design arbitrary aspherics. Analytic definition of the aspheric surfaces is done away with and numerical solution of nonlinear difference equations called Aspheric Intrinsic Equations (AIE) is implemented instead. Simulation results compared with traditional opticaldesign software are presented, which prove that this new method is more effective and reliable in designing aspheric surfaces.

The integration of diffractive optical elements (DOE) into an opticaldesign opens up new possibilities for applications in sensing and illumination. If the resulting optics is used in a larger spectral range we must correct not only the chromatic error of the conventional, refractive, part of the design but also of the DOE. We present a simple but effective strategy to select substrates which allow the minimum etch depths for the DOEs. The selection depends on both the refractive index and the dispersion.

We present a purely mechanical means of producing highly concentric spherical lenses at the endfaces of optical fibers. The production process has two stages. First, conical lenses are produced in a grinding process that ensures excellent concentricity. Then, the conical lenses are transformed to spherical lenses using a novel process called loose abrasive blasting. The cone grinding is carried out on a microgrinding machine, which has a sophisticated control system that enables the production of precision conical lenses. The blasting is carried out on a diamond blasting machine. Plots showing automatic centering performance of the microgrinding machine and scanning electron microscopy images of the conical and spherical lenses are presented. Studies on adaptive lenses, which are formed of two transparent elastic surfaces and have a transparent liquid medium between them, have focused mostly on the characterization, analysis and optical performance of the proposed lenses. No attention, however, has been given to the mechanical design that would allow the conception of a user-friendly functional mounting that is adaptable to conventional optical systems. This work, therefore, presents the design and manufacturing processes of the mounting for a 20 mm diameter biconvex adaptive lens. It also presents an analysis of the membranes used as elastic surfaces and the images formation of the proposed lens.

New CCD chips with on-chip micro lens arrays, however, have some characteristics that limit design choices where precise illumination uniformity is required The micro lenses cause vignetting and limit the angular aperture of each pixel. This paper measures vignetting and consequent shading for a typical micro lensed CCD chip. Nevertheless, when properly designed, camera systems employing these advanced CCD chips can be precisely calibrated with respect to face plate irradiance.

This paper presents the results given by the nominal design and tolerance analysis of a narrow-field-of-view camera lens equipped with a rotating prism scanning system. The first aspects taken into consideration have been the compensation of the chromatic aberration, distortion reduction, and the correlation between depth-of-field and lens resolution. Then, a rigorous approach to determine the relationship between the field-of-regard direction and the prism orientations is discussed. Finally, the tolerance analysis results give the predictable pointing direction precision as function of the system tolerances.

This lens with 0.2 numerical aperture and high field of view is a good candidate to be used in multi-aperture super resolution imagers. Point spread function and the telecentricity of the lens is extracted numerically and measured experimentally.
