Now that LEDs have massively invaded the illumination market, a clear trend has emerged for more efficient and targeted lighting. The project described here is at the leading edge of the trend and aims at developing an evaluation board to test smart lighting applications. This is made possible thanks to a new liquid crystal light modulator recently developed for broadening LED light beams. The modulator is controlled by electrical signals and is characterized by a linear working zone. This feature allows the implementation of a closed loop control with a sensor feedback. This project shows that the use of computer vision is a promising opportunity for cheap closed loop control. The developed evaluation board integrates the liquid crystal modulator, a webcam, a LED light source and all the required electronics to implement a closed loop control with a computer vision algorithm.

As an application of the PV technology, building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) technologies have attracted an increasing interest in the past decade. One of these BIPV elements is the luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs). The LSC consists of a transparent plate embedded with luminescent dyes or inorganic particles, and the solar cells are attached on one or more sides. The incoming sunlight absorbed by the luminescent dyes or inorganic particles re-emits at a longer wavelength, and part of the re-emitting light trapped in the transparent plate reaches the PV cell attached on the LSC and convert it to electricity. However, the efficiency of the LSCs is still low at this stage. The surface loss on the top surface of the transparent plate is one of the main losses in LSCs. The prism film in liquid-crystal display (LCD) module is used to collimate the light in the module and enhance the overall brightness, and would be used in the LSCs to enhance the incoming sunlight to the solar cells attached on the end of the transparent plate. Then the design of the prism film is important. In this study, the ray-tracing simulation is used to investigate the optical characteristics of the LSC with the prism film covered on the top surface of the transparent plate. Different structure of the prism film will be considered to enhance the light reaches the PV cell attached on the LSC.

Minimal refractive index data in the near-infrared spectrum are available for optical plastics. Typically, refractive index measurements are made by fabricating a prism of candidate optical material and using appropriate metrology equipment. Few plastics are available in thicknesses adequate to fabricate appropriate size prisms;however, almost all optical plastics can be acquired in a flat plate form. The investigation considered two fundamental approaches to measure the refractive index by (i) rotating a flat plate and measure the beam displacement and ( ii) measuring the optical focal shift. The rotation method was determined not accurate enough. An optical focal shift method optical(n = t(optical)/t(mechanical)) was developed that utilized existing laboratory equipment. The shift of focus when the plastic plate sample was inserted was located by determining the position of maximum contrast of the projection of a Ronchi ruling target when illuminated by flux from a Cary Eclipse covering the spectral range of 550-975 nm. The instrumentation, data processing, and measurement performance are presented.

Directed energy propulsion for interstellar travel has been proposed as an ideal method for reaching appreciable speeds relative to the speed of light: 0.2c. However, the amount of energy required necessitates a large aperture, on the order of kilometers, while mitigation of atmospheric perturbations requires a discretization of the aperture into many individual laser elements. The use of fiber lasers for these elements obligates mode-matching the fiber to the desired 10 cm aperture for a collimated beam. Various collimation systems were designed and compared. A 3-lens system with one achromat and two aspheric lenses, with two of the lenses used as a Keplerian telescope to achieve a system-shortening effect was analyzed. A similar system made with a plano-convex lens replacing the large-aperture aspheric lens with two additional compensating lenses was compared. A single diffractive optic operating at F/8 was likewise considered. The optical performance of these systems was compared, as was the cost-effectiveness. Scalability to millions of elements was required, so cost-per-system was a crucial consideration factor. Possible manufacturing processes for a diffractive system were investigated, and stamping processes for replication were analyzed to determine the possibility of replication of such an optic reliably, cheaply, and with acceptable results.

This technical paper describes an adjustment mechanism capable of producing microradian resolution rotational motion of an optical element. The mechanism rotates an optical element about two orthogonal axes utilizing flexure beam elements. The flexures facilitate frictionless rotation about the center of the optical element, in roll and tilt over a 1.5 degree range. The optical element is retained in an athermal mount to minimize distortion. The mechanism is constructed entirely of titanium. Integral to the mechanism is adjustment actuators to provide position adjustment of the optical element. Locking actuators retain the mechanism's final adjusted positions when exposed to severe vibration and thermal environments. The mechanism configuration may be scaled in size appropriate to the optical component requiring mounting. Although the flexure mechanism is patent pending(1), this paper presents an overview of the engineering principles utilized in precision mechanisms that the reader may be able to utilize in his or her design project.

The diffraction gratings are widely used in Space-flight satellites for spectrograph instruments or in ground-based telescopes in astronomy. The diffraction gratings are one of the key optical components of such systems and have to exhibit very high optical performances. HORIBA Jobin Yvon S.A.S. (part of HORIBA Group) is in the forefront of such gratings development for more than 40 years. During the past decades, HORIBA Jobin Yvon (HJY) has developed a unique expertise in diffraction grating design and manufacturing processes for holographic, ruled or etched gratings. We will present in this paper an overview of diffraction grating technologies especially designed for space and astronomy applications. We will firstly review the heritage of the company in this field with the space qualification of different grating types. Then, we will describe several key grating technologies developed for specific space or astronomy projects: ruled blazed low groove density plane reflection grating, holographic blazed replica plane grating, high-groove density holographic toroidal and spherical grating and transmission Fused Silica Etched (FSE) grism-assembled grating.

Thermal requirements often constrain optical designs resulting in cost or performance compromises. Unless an optical system is designed from the start considering thermal requirements, effects including thermal defocus can become detrimental to the system's real-world performance. Novel negative thermal expansion ALLVAR Alloys enable a new degree of freedom during initial system design or can be used to passively athermalize an existing optical system without having to re-design. This work discusses the analysis and integration of ALLVAR Alloy 30 into an optomechanical housing to athermalize mounted commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) doublets. Calculations for the thermal defocus of the doublets and the requisite opto-mechanics to athermalize each system are first presented. The target athermalization of the doublets is also discussed. The ALLVAR Alloy 30 athermalized doublet assemblies are then manufactured, built, and tested. The results of the as-built data and testing are presented as compared to the thermal defocus analysis. This work demonstrates that an existing optical system design can be athermalized by utilizing an ALLVAR Alloy material in the optomechanical design.

Abnormal dispersion is found in a large number of optical liquids. These liquids are quite useful in the design of apochromatic lens systems because they are inexpensive and are readily available compared to the expensive abnormal dispersion glasses and crystals more commonly used. Further, there is no practical upper limit on the size of a liquid optical element. However, because the use of these materials as optical elements is quite new, the long term stability of their optical properties after exposure to various environmental conditions must be determined. In this paper, we report on a series of tests performed to determine the optical stability of several abnormal dispersion liquids. The liquids were subjected to: (1) high intensity ultraviolet radiation, (2) high temperatures, and (3) long term exposure to air. Measurements of both optical transmission and refractive index were performed before and after each exposure. The tests were performed on four abnormal dispersion liquids that have been found to be quite useful in the design of apochromatic lenses. The results indicate that long term exposure to either intense ultraviolet radiation or air, produced only negligible changes in the index of refraction. Changes in optical transmission were observed, but they were largely confined to the ultraviolet spectral region. Prolonged exposure to temperatures of 60 degree(s)C did not produce any measurable change in the optical properties. The measurements were performed at the Vavilov State optical Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia, in collaboration with Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory, Palo Alto, California.

To compensate the spherical aberration of the eye using the conic constant of the first surface of a contact lens for different refractive errors. Refractive errors were simulated by modifying only the first curvature of the cornea. For every refractive error was calculating Zernike polynomials using Optics Software for Layout and Optimization (OSLO) EDU edition with and without contact lens. To calculate the conic constant of the contact lens we use the Seidel sums for thin lenses from the longitudinal spherical aberration as it proposes V. Mahajan. The value of Zernike spherical aberration coefficient for the eye with farsightedness (+ 5.00 D) + spherical contact lens was 0.142691 mu m. The conic constant value to compensate the spherical aberration was -0.222995 and the value of Zernike spherical aberration coefficient of the eye + aspherical contact lens was 0.004354 mu m. The value of Zernike spherical aberration coefficient for the eye with myopia (- 5.00 D) + spherical contact lens was 0.144505 mu m. The conic constant value to compensate the spherical aberration was -0.101424 and the value of Zernike spherical aberration coefficient of the eye + aspherical contact lens was 0.072820 mu m. The proposed method allows us to design contact lenses that compensate for the spherical aberration of the eye from the Zernike polynomials. Although the design of contact lenses is to third order, we obtain a smaller spherical aberration than the chromatic aberration on the axis without use optimization routine.

Experiments such as CHORUS at CERN require the inspection of a large amount of nuclear emulsion plates exposed to particle beams. Rare events need to be found, measured and analysed. Their features are stored as grains in microscopic dimensions in a three-dimensional stack of plates. A new, fully automatic immersion microscope system was developed for this purpose. It features high resolution, small depth of focus, large working distance, large field of view and synchronization of illumination and detector. An additional requirement is given by variations in the refraction index and in the relative thickness of immersion oil and emulsion. The approach used here is an imaging system based on a vario objective lens (variable oil immersion) with extreme numerical aperture, large working distance and wide field, combined with a matched high-aperture Koehler illuminator. The light source is a mercury are lamp, combined with a filter package for the g-line. It includes liquid crystal elements for synchronized shuttering and variable attenuation. The theoretical resolution is less than 1 micron in x, y, z within a volume of 0.5mm diameter (x, y) times 1 mm scanning depth (z) in all situations within a predefined index range (1.49 to 1.54). Three identical pieces of the system have been built. The experimentally measured resolution confirms the expectations and is better than 1 micron in all three dimensions. This is the result of a complex process of system design and manufacturing, unifying optical, opto-mechanical and optoelectronical contributions. This process spans from the early stages of feasibility and manufacturing up to the test and adjustment procedures. The three prototypes are operational since the fall of 1998 in the frame of the CHORUS project. Practical experience and application results are presented.
