This paper describes our experience with global lens optimization using algorithms that can modify an existing lens construction in an optimal way or create an entirely new construction. The binary-search method assembles lens elements according to the bits in a binary number, ensuring that all combinations of power are tested, while the saddle-point method can either add elements to a starting lens or start from scratch. The latter algorithm also naturally leads to a method of removing an element in an optimum way, which can sometimes simplify a lens with no loss of quality.

Hybrid optics offer a valuable aberration correction tool for the lensdesigner. However, careful consideration must be given to the calculation of the optical performance during the design process, and to the practical implementation of the elements if the potential benefits are to be realised in practice. optical performance can be accurately assessed by tracing multiple diffraction orders. It may be particularly important to utilise such a technique if, for example, the image-forming bundles sample a small number of diffractive zones. This situation is examined in detail.

Sandia has developed an opticaldesign for wearable binoculars utilizing freeform surfaces and switchable mirrors. The goals of the effort included a design lightweight enough to be worn by the user while providing a useful field of view and magnification as well as non-mechanical switching between normal and zoomed vision. Sandia's approach is a four mirror, off-axis system taking advantage of the weight savings and chromatic performance of a reflective system. The system incorporates an electrochromic mirror on the final surface before the eye allowing the user to switch between viewing modes. Results from a prototype of a monocular version with 6.6x magnification will be presented. The individual mirrors, including three off-axis aspheres and one true freeform, were fabricated using a diamond-turning based process. A slow-slide servo process was used for the freeform element. Surface roughness and form measurement of the freeform mirror will be presented as well as the expected impact on performance. The alignment and assembly procedure will be reviewed as well as the measured optical performance of the prototype. In parallel to the opticaldesign work, development of an electrochromic mirror has provided a working device with faster switching than current state of the art. Switchable absorbers have been demonstrated with switching times less than 0.5 seconds. The deposition process and characterization of these devices will be presented. Finally, details of an updated opticaldesign with additional freeform surfaces will be presented as well as plans for integrating the electrochromic mirror into the system.

This study presents the methods for designing an expander lens for an MWIR zoom lens through the third-order aberration analysis and evaluating the optical zoom system. This expander lens is used to enlarge the focal lengths of an original main zoom lens two times, which unfortunately doubles the aperture size of the expander lens elements. Thus, this extended apertures significantly generate the aberrations of a zoom system. To solve the problem, an expander lens has been designed using the third-order aberration analysis numerically. Since an MWIR optical system uses a cooled detector, this zoom system should be designed to eliminate the narcissus effect. Using this design approach, we efficiently obtain an expander lens for an MWIR zoom system satisfying the current requirements.

Due to increasing environmental limitations on the use of certain raw materials used to make optical glasses, there is now an economic desire to minimize the number of glasses used in lensdesign. This paper presents the results of a study to create a suggested universal catalogue that contains the minimum number of glasses needed to satisfy most possible lensdesigns. A nearly symmetric double Gauss lens is used in the glass selection process. As part of this study, the relationship between the error function and the number of glasses chosen is studied, and in addition, a glass range study is also carried out. Three different lens libraries were studied using the global optimization method and the most frequently chosen glasses were then compiled into the suggested universal glass catalogue. A suggested universal glass catalogue constructed from this study is presented.

Using the caustic merit function for plane waves incident upon a singlet lens, a comparison between the optical performance of the lens using an axial gradient index with spherical surfaces or aspheric surfaces with constant index material has been investigated. Results indicate that the use of an inhomogeneous medium for the lens material is more effective in the controlling aberrations than the use of aspheric surfaces for a similar lens.
