In this paper, we proposed a new configuration of concentrator in solar PV system. A special optical system in the concentrator used in focusing sun light to solar cell is proposed, the system compose of an aspherical surface and a specific diffusing surface. The uniform-squared light pattern is obtained on the solar cell, the shape and size of light pattern can be modulated by the parameters of the diffusing surface. In order to decrease the weight of the lens, the concentrator in Fresnel lens type is built at last. Besides, the optical efficiencies formed by the aspherical concentrator and Fresnel concentrator are about 92% and 77%, the concentrations are about 720mW/mm(2) and 640mW/mm(2), and the acceptance angles are about 0.35 degrees and 0.30 degrees, respectively. The tolerances in assembling the component of the concentrator are also discussed in detail.

The Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) will measure the distribution of total column carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere from an Earth-orbiting satellite. Three high-resolution grating spectrometers measure two CO2 bands centered at 1.61 and 2.06 mum and the oxygen A-band centered at 0.76 mum in the near infrared region of the spectrum. This paper presents the optical design and highlights the critical optical requirements flowed down from the scientific requirements. These requirements necessitate a focal ratio of f/1.9, a spectral resolution of 20,000, and precedence-setting requirements for polarization stability and the instrument line shape function. The solution encompasses three grating spectrometers that are patterned after a simple refractive spectrometer approach consisting of an entrance slit, a two-element collimator, a planar reflection grating, and a two-element camera lens. Each spectrometer shares a common field of view through a single all-reflective telescope. The light is then re-collimated and passed through a relay system, separating the three bands before re-imaging the scene onto each of the spectrometer entrance slits using an all-reflective inverse Newtonian re-imager.

The design & tolerancing of an optical testing system (OTS) presents a unique set of challenges not generally encountered during the typical optical design process. The authors have spent the past six years developing and using a series of optical systems designed to measure the surface figure & radius-of-curvature of various ultra-lightweight mirrors at 30 K. These mirrors were part of a technology development program to support NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The design of these systems required consideration of the following: (i) potentially large figure errors in the test mirror (due to gravity sag & cryo-distortion), (ii) cryo-shrinkage of the aperture and radius-of-curvature, (iii) figure changes due to the use of mirror actuators, and (iv) vibration between the OTS & the test mirror. In addition, an exhaustive tolerancing process was required for each system in order to reach a set of alignment tolerances that were achievable using the equipment available and within the test environment. The authors found many aspects of the OTS design process to be significantly different from the norm;at the same time, however, viewing the process as a typical optical design problem often-times brought clarification. This paper will describe both the differences and the similarities observed between the design of an OTS as opposed to a traditional imaging system.

Many practical approaches have been developed for computing the point spread function (PSF) of imaging systems and the subject has been extensively studied for many years, since this has been a classical topic in OptiCs-6. In recent times, the exact numerical calculation of the diffraction integrals and, hence, of the PSF of image forming systems has been successfully addressed(7-10). These methods are based on the determination of the critical points and the semi-periodic zones of the integrand on the plane of the aperture, followed by the summation for each of the zones. In the present work we address a comparison between an approximate calculation method based on the classical approach and the cited exact numerical procedures, mainly regarding the required computational effort involved.

A time-of-flight (TOF) system based on a novel Photonic Mixer Device (PMD), which detects and demodulates light simultaneously, has demonstrated that it is feasible to realize a 3-D imaging system with compactness, low cost and sufficient resolution for many applications. Active illumination is used in the TOF imaging system. Because of the limited available light source with large bandwidth and in consideration of eye safety, LEDs or low power laser diodes are used as preferable Light sources. The received light may be strongly damped in an order of 40-50dB, depending on the surface characteristics of the objects. Therefore the optical transmission in the light transmission chain of light source - sender lens - object - receiver lens - (PMD) detector array need to be simulated and optimized in order to achieve better performance and maximal power transmission, by the design of such a 3-D camera. Based on the modeling of the light source (laser diodes and LEDs), lens system and statistical characteristics of objects one is able to simulate the light transmission and the light distribution on the object and the PMD detector array. By the use of time-of-flight of the sensing light it is necessary to beep the phase uniformity of the illumination light, because every detector can possibly receive light from different light ways. This would result in a reduction of detection resolution. The optical-path-differences (OPD) representing the time differences from different paths have been simulated from the source to the related pixel for the designed transmitter lens and the receiver lens. Only one source is usually used by direct current modulation of laser diode or LED for uniform modulation phase. The simulation of the light distribution has given estimation of the light gathering efficiency of every pixel and of possible crosstalk between adjacent pixels.

In optical design, the designer's experience is critical. Indeed, an experienced optical designer will often choose a better starting point for optimization than an inexperienced one. Most of the time, lens design software use a local optimization algorithm, which is why the starting point is so important to get an excellent optical system. We present here an alternative to the classical optical design method and a solution to reduce the impact of the designer's experience. Our alternative couples the Simultaneous Multiple Surfaces (SMS) method, introduced by Benitez and Minano with optimization in Zemax OpticStudio. The SMS method is a direct construction method of optical systems without optical aberrations for as many field points as the system contains surfaces. This method can deal with both aspheric and freeform optical systems depending on the dimension of the method implemented. Our implementation of the SMS method can design optical systems with three surfaces. We use the SMS method to define a freeform system with an F-number of 0.85. Then, we use this fast freeform system as a starting point to perform further optimization in Zemax OpticStudio. Finally, we achieve to design two diffraction-limited freeform systems, one over a square field of view of +/- 30 degrees and another over a rectangular field of view of +/- 33 degrees x +/- 26 degrees.

Laboratory-on-a-chip has been interested widely in recent years, where the sample preparation, bio-chemical reaction, separation, detection and analysis, are performed in a small biochip which is only a fingernall dimension. In order to obtain a high detection sensitivity I fluors/um(2) (one fluorescence molecule per square micrometer) in biochip scanning system it is required that the scanning objective lens is a big numerical aperture(>0.5), very small focal spot(<5um) and long back focal length(>3mm). In this paper, a combined lens is designed for the scanning objective lens, which is with big numerical aperture NA>0.7, very small focal spot(<2um) and long back focal length(>3mm). The phase aberrations of combined lens, including the aspherical aberration and the chromatic aberration corresponding to wavelength 532nm, 570nm 635nm, 670nm, are corrected very well. The encircled energy diagram of the lens is good to the diffraction limit. The focal spot diagram the optical path difference diagram, the transverse ray fan plot and the modulation transfer function, are studied also. A novel confocal scanning system of biochip with the designed combined lens as the objective lens is developed, some experiment results in a multi-channel biochip are obtained.

Staring infrared imagers have multiple surfaces within the integrated Dewar assembly which contribute to non-traditional Narcissus artifacts. Static non-uniformity correction is insufficient to remove dynamic Narcissus artifacts caused by moving focus or zoom groups. Dynamic Narcissus artifacts often manifest as rings apparent to the human eye, although they may lie near the noise floor of the imager. Moreover, strong field curvature of the Narcissus can complicate diagnosis using paraxial methods. We compare a simple pupil ghost metric to traditional Narcissus metrics and present an experimental case study illustrating how the metric can be used during optimization to eliminate the effect.

Two types of fisheye lenses for automobile navigation are designed with slope-constrained Q-type aspheres. Special requirements have been considered in the design process, and Q-type surfaces are introduced by converted from other kinds of aspheric description with only coefficients of low-order terms retained. A possible problem of imaging the first surface onto the sensor has also been analyzed. As a result, as for the six-element fisheye lens, MTF is greater than 0.3 at 45lp/mm, f-theta distortion is less than 0.03 when the focal length is calibrated, field of view is 230 degrees and full field relative illumination is greater than 0.4. For the four-element fisheye lens, MTF is greater than 0.4 at 45lp/mm, f-theta distortion is less than 0.16, field of view is 190 degrees and full field relative illumination is greater than 0.6. The design results show that the Q-type surfaces employed in fisheye lenses can make the system more compact, lightweighted and easier to manufacture.

New panoramic and immersive digital imaging developments have generated increased interest in high performance fisheye camera lenses suitable for 35 mm single lens reflex (SLR) cameras. Special concerns for such applications are the uniformity of illumination and radial image mapping. Because two hemispherical images are digitally stitched together to form a complete 360-degree x 180-degree image, the performance of the lens at the 90 degree (preferably more than 90 degree) edge of the fisheye image is just as important as the center of the image. Lateral color, high order distortion (edge compression) and severe drop-off of illumination at the full field become obvious image defects and cause seams in the immersive image. Fisheye lens designs have widely varying relative illumination and distortion across the hemispherical field of view of the lens. After describing the contributing factors to relative illumination, we survey a collection of fisheye designs and compare their illumination performance, radial mapping and lateral color. A new method of measuring relative illumination and radial mapping in the laboratory is described and results on commercially available fish-eye lenses are presented.
