A strategy for optimizing both the on-axis and the off-axis performance of coherently (directly) coupled visual instruments is presented. The strategy draws on the recently published body of data regarding the influence of various individual Seidel aberration and aberration combinations on subjective contrast sensitivity and resolution tasks, as well as studies on the correlation between subjective image quality and objective instrumental figures of merit. An MTF-based metric allows both optimization and tolerancing to be performed in a coherent manner that is based on experimental results of the effects of aberrations.

We describe the design of a high-throughput pushbroom imaging spectrometer and telescope system that is capable of Landsat swath and resolution while providing better than 10 nm per pixel spectral resolution. The design is based on a 3200 x 480 element x 18 mu m pixel size focal plane array, two of which are utilized to cover the full swath. At an optical speed of F/1.8, the system is the fastest proposed to date to our knowledge. The utilization of only two spectrometer modules fed from the same telescope reduces system complexity while providing a solution within achievable detector technology. Predictions of complete system response are shown. Also, it is shown that detailed ghost analysis is a requirement for this type of spectrometer and forms an essential part of a complete design.

In present-day optical system design, it is tacitly assumed that local minima are points in the merit function landscape without relationships between them. We will show however that there is a certain degree of order in the design landscape and that this order is best observed when we change the dimensionality of the optimization problem and when we consider not only local minima, but saddle points as well. We have developed earlier a computational method for detecting saddle points numerically, and a method, then applicable only in a special case, for constructing saddle points by adding lenses to systems that are local minima. The saddle point construction method will be generalized here and we Will show how, by performing a succession of one-dimensional calculations, many local minima of a given global search can be systematically obtained from the set of local minima corresponding to systems with fewer lenses. As a simple example, the results of the Cooke triplet global search will be analyzed. In this case, the vast majority of the saddle points found by our saddle point detection software can in fact be obtained in a much simpler way by saddle point construction, starting from doublet local minima.

Satellite-based remote sensing offers the best opportunity for studying the properties of atmospheric aerosols and their radiative effects on the global scale over extended periods Tropospheric aerosols represent the largest uncertainty in predicting the radiative forcing of climate (IPCC, 2001). A key question is whether atmospheric aerosols contribute to warming or cool the climate system. Since the sign of direct radiative forcing is controlled by the ability of aerosol particles to absorb light, the information on the single scattering albedo of different aerosol types and its variations with aerosol lifecycles is clearly very desirable. Furthermore, the wavelength-dependent values of single scattering albedo from the UV to IR are important in retrieving aerosol optical depth from satellites passive remote sensing and for climate modeling. We describe the design of a space-borne polarimeter that was derived from the key science requirements. The performance of this candidate polarimeter, operating in the UV/VIS/NIR spectral regions, is described. The optical design form and various optical performance parameters, including transmittance calculations of the polarimeter's spectral channels showing the "leakage" of polarization states, as well as the degree of polarization as function of wavelength and field of view are presented for the various wavelength regions. An overview of the instrument performance and driving operational parameters is presented.

The multi-configurative microscopic system for inspecting the wire-bonding of reed frame is designed. Object rays is nearly collimated by a objective lens group which is a common lens group of x2 and x6 imaging lens systems and is splitted by two beam-splitters composed of a penta-prism and a refracting prism. And object rays started from the central region and the boundary region(reed frame region) on semiconductor chip(that is, the object) are imaged at the two different imaging planes by x2 and x6 imaging lens groups, respectively. The x6 imaging lens system with a constant object distance and a constant magnification is well designed by general imaging optics system design method. However, since the depth of wire structure on the reed frame has about +/-3 mm, in order to observe by a constant magnification and at a fixed imaging plane without the dependency on the variation of objective distance generated by the depth of wire structure on the reed frame, the imaging lens system is composed of two separated groups, which should be moved along nonlinear locus like mechanically compensated zoom lenses. The nonlinear equations for zoom locus are derived by using the Gaussian bracket. Refraction powers and positions of each groups are numerically determined by solving the equations, and initial design data for each groups is obtained by using Seidel third order aberration theory. The optimization technique is finally utilized to obtain this multi-configurative microscopic system.

A technique for decomposing the optical Transfer Function (OTF) into a novel set of basis functions has been developed. The decomposition provides insight into the performance of optical systems containing both wavefront error and apodization, as well as the interactions between the various components of the pupil function. Previously, this technique has been applied to systems with circular pupils with both uniform illumination and Gaussian apodization. Here, systems with annular pupils are explored. In cases of annular pupil with simple defocus, analytic expressions for the OTF decomposition coefficients can be calculated. The annular case is not only applicable to optical systems with central obscurations, but the technique can be extended to systems with multiple ring structures. The ring structures can have constant area as is often found in zone plates and diffractive lenses or the rings can have arbitrary areas. Analytic expressions for the OTF decomposition coefficients again can be determined for ring structures with constant and quadratic phase variations. The OTF decomposition provides a general tool to analyze and compare a diverse set of optical systems.

Using raytracing method (ZEMAX program), the reduction of SA of the whole human eye may be reduced via the combined effects of asphericity (Q) and the ratio of the front and back surface of an IOL. The overall SA for best image quality may be defined by Q* when the image position off axis is reduced to that of the paraxial. Our calculations show the following general features: (1) For a give Q value, the influence on the SA is proportional to the surface power;(2) for minimal whole eye SA, negative Q is needed in IOL;(3) for a given IOL power, the Q* is smaller when the front surface has a smaller power. All above features derived from numerical raytracing method are consistent with analytic formulas.

Fluidic lenses offer tunability and flexibility that are not available with conventional solid lenses. The development of a variable focus lens has the potential for replacing bulky optical systems and allows the miniaturization of imaging optics used in digital cameras and mobile phone cameras. In this paper, a liquid lens platform for use in an undergraduate laboratory setting is presented. A variable lens is prepared by injecting water into bulk polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) that remains uncured in its fluid state. We report the tunable focusing ability of this simple liquid lens system and analyze the change in focal length as a function of injected water volume. The water-PDMS interface acts as a diverging lens, in agreement with ray tracing analysis based on curvature and refractive indices. Variable focal lengths are measured with an optical set-up employing a helium-neon laser and a solid converging lens with focal length = 2.5 cm. By increasing the water volume from 0.05 to 0.30 ml, we are able to tune the focal length from -6.5 mm to -10.6 mm. lens geometry remains spherical as the curvature of the lens changes with the addition of water. Our experiments coincide with a simple theoretical framework for a thick lens immersed in a medium. The water-PDMS lens is a promising component of basic and advanced experiments in an undergraduate optics course.

The Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) is one of the instruments slated to fly on the EOS Aura satellite in 2003. TES is a Fourier transform spectrometer designed to measure the concentration of various tropospheric chemical species. The Focal Plane Opto-Mechanical Assemblies (FPOMAs) are situated at the end of the TES optical train and are comprised of cryogenic telescopes, reimaging optics, and focal planes. We present the cryogenic optical design of the FPOMA units and discuss optimization parameters and predicted performance. We present measured performance data and compare it with the predicted performance.

An ultrashort throw lens with a catadioptric relay (USTCR) for curved screens has a half-field angle greater than 110 degrees. The angle of the principal ray incident on the aspherical mirror increases according to the height of the ray emitted from the object surface. A larger field angle leads to larger sag amount. Thus, the degree of difficulty in precision machining increases. In this study, we examined how the tangent of the concave mirror surface can be reduced such that it can be manufactured while maintaining the half-field angle and its optical performance. It was found that the interval between imaging points reaching the screen can be made constant by suppressing the change in the principal ray incident on the concave mirror by +1- 1 degrees or less, particularly in the area of a half-field angle of 90 degrees or more, and making the change in the tangent of the concave mirror surface constant. As an index of distortion, we show that the perimeter ratio (Pr) of the frame length, which was equally divided by 5 x5 in the screen, improved from 0.26 to 0.73. As one possible application, a projection system that can be realized with only 8 projectors is proposed, as opposed to conventional systems consisting of approximately 20 projectors in omni-directional projection systems.
