The CO2 laser systems are widely used for different specialised surgery types and cosmetological procedures. The market is filled with various offers regarding the systems, however, every manufacturer supplies a very limited range of handpieces with the equipment. Thus, the work of surgeon or a medical worker is complicated by the discrepancy of a handpiece with the ergonomic/ technical requirements for a specific procedure. It may result in negative consequences of the procedure itself or a choice not in favor of laser technologies. The work presents the design of optical system and construction of specialised handpieces for CO2 laser system based on the discussion with medical workers of several hospitals that directly interact with the equipment and the technical requirements of medical procedures.

Present paper considers a technique of diffraction element microminiaturization in the process of optical data recording onto photothermoplastic films (PTPFs) by using the photothermoplastic recording (PTPR) equipment adapted for outer space. It has been found that the application of surface - active substances (SAS) onto the free surface of PTPF facilitates the appearance and evolution of microdiffraction optical systems (whose period doesn't exceed 1 mum) on the profile of basic diffraction elements (with a period < 5 m). Miniature dimensions of microdiffraction elements provide high resolution without loss in diffraction efficiency, as the dimensions, shape (depth) of a diffraction element actually depend not only on the thickness of the visualising layer but also on SAS properties, namely on the dielectric and physical - chemical properties and, particulary, on the ability of SAS to influence onto the surface tension. The shift in the flow point of the visualising layer material provides the increase both in the diffraction efficiency and resolution at the expense of discretization of the surface diffraction elements into 2, 4, 6, ... microdiffraction elements.

The design of four mirrors anti-astigmatism astronomical telescope is carried out for low earth orbit satellite. By integrating with Cassagrain and Schwartzschild configurations, the telescope is design. It contains four mirrors with conic surface, to form an aberration free. The system contains two parts: first part is the Cassagrain type telescope for pick up the ground object to the stop position, and the second part is Schwartzschild configurations as relay optics, which is to relay the image to high resolution CCD sensor to provide 0.5 ground space distance image. The system is symmetric with aberration free within a one cubic size fitted for small satellite. The optic mechanical is simple easy to assemble for optical calibration, while the body is rigid in space.

This study presents results obtained from the exact tracing of rays of an adaptive lens, that is, a liquid lens with transparent elastic surfaces. Because the elastics surfaces are deformed by a liquid, they acquire different curvatures depending on the difference in pressures of the liquid and of the environment. Images generated by this type of lens are simulated with a ray-tracing computer program, considering that each surface can be modeled with concentric spherical rings with different curvatures;this is because the elastic coefficients of the plastic materials used are non-linear.

The properties of optical surfaces generated by diffraction are studied analyzing the changes in the curvature function of the boundary condition. The study leads to establish a classification for the optical fields as elliptical, hyperbolical or parabolic. The elliptical regions are separated from hyperbolic regions by a region of parabolic type, which corresponds to optical focusing regions. The main result of the analysis leads us to describe and to control bifurcations and vortices effects allowing to geometrize and to control the topological properties of the optical field. For this feature is important to control the geometry of the parabolic region, obtained by controlling the curvature function in the boundary condition. The model is implemented experimentally applying a linear transformation in transmittances of zone plate type. The experimental results corroborate the theoretical predictions

Most Silicon based depth and lidar sensors rely on near-infrared (NIR 750-900nm) sources to produce depth images as Silicon CMOS sensors can achieve a high quantum efficiency for an unbeatable cost at such wavelengths. Advances in short wave infrared (SWIR) sensor technologies, such as Silicon-Germanium sensors, changes this paradigm and opens a new window for groundbreaking sensor designs, as SWIR can push the wavelength above retinal hazard area (>1400nm), allowing for much higher eye safety, due to the low penetration of those wavelengths through the eye lens. Here, we propose to use a Silicon Metalens flat optics and build upon our stacked sensor technologies to obtain a fully Silicon integrated stacked sensor at SWIR wavelengths. We will discuss the design of the stacked sensor and focus on the Silicon Metalens for multiple use-cases. We will demonstrate the results of our Silicon metalens prototype at 1550nm. We will show numerical simulations of the optical stack for eye-tracking application or wide-angle time of flight (TOF) and discuss the necessary trade-offs.

Local optimization algorithms, when they are optimized only for speed, have in certain situations an unpredictable behavior: starting points very close to each other lead after optimization to different minima. In these cases, the sets of points, which, when chosen as starting points for local optimization, lead to the same minimum (the so-called basins of attraction), have a fractal-like shape. Before it finally converges to a local minimum, optimization started in a fractal region first displays chaotic transients. The sensitivity to changes in the initial conditions that leads to fractal basin borders is caused by the discontinuous evolution path (i.e. the jumps) of local optimization algorithms such as the damped-least-squares method with insufficient damping. At the cost of some speed, the fractal character of the regions can be made to vanish, and the downward paths become more predictable. The borders of the basins depend on the implementation details of the local optimization algorithm, but the saddle points in the merit function landscape always remain on these borders.

Foveated imaging addresses the need for compact wide-angle imagers capable of high-resolution and compressed data transmission. The principle behind foveated imaging is to cover a wide field-of-view (FOV) with a relatively simple and compact low-resolution lens, and use a liquid crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) to correct wavefront aberrations at any selected field point. The SLM correction provides a high-resolution fovea that can be actively moved anywhere within the FOV. While most research has focused so far mainly on SLM performance, the general trend being to increase SLM resolution and modulation depth, the actual lens design and system optimization aspects were often neglected. In this paper, we propose a wide-angle lens design intended for foveated imaging applications, and discuss typical tradeoffs. Taking this design as an example, we present a method to estimate the smallest SLM resolution required to correct the wavefront error effectively, showing that with the appropriate design, this resolution can be reduced up to 10 times compared to current designs. Increasing the SLM resolution beyond this point and increasing the modulation depth above one wavelength is not necessary, and will actually reduce the performance of the imaging system. We also demonstrate the importance of fabrication tolerances, and we propose a method to calibrate the SLM in order to cancel out all additional wavefront aberrations introduced by fabrication and assembly errors.

In this paper GPU based data parallel technique is used to reduce calculating time in diffractive optics elements (DOE) design. By using compute unified device architecture (CUDA) framework, comparison of acceleration radio of some major methods using in DOE design, including Gerchberg Saxton algorithm for global optimization in conjunction with Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffractive integrating transformation, genetic algorithm with a finite-difference time-domain method and simulated annealing algorithm, is made with demonstrational DOE-lens design, whose focal spot size is 0.5 mu m, incident light wavelength is 650 nm, focal length is 3mm, DOE aperture size is 2mm.

In a recent paper, we compared the diffraction and geometrical optical transfer functions (OTFs) of an optical imaging system, and showed that the GOTF approximates the DOTF within 10% when a primary aberration is about two waves or larger [Appl. Opt., 55, 3241-3250 (2016)]. In this paper, we determine and compare the times to calculate the DOTF by autocorrelation or digital autocorrelation of the pupil function, and by a Fourier transform (FT) of the point-spread function (PSF);and the GOTF by a FT of the geometrical PSF and its approximation, the spot diagram. Our starting point for calculating the DOTF is the wave aberrations of the system in its pupil plane, and the ray aberrations in the image plane for the GOTF. The numerical results for primary aberrations and a typical imaging system show that the direct integrations are slow, but the calculation of the DOTF by a FT of the PSF is generally faster than the GOTF calculation by a FT of the spot diagram.
