To compensate the spherical aberration of the eye using the conic constant of the first surface of a contact lens for different refractive errors. Refractive errors were simulated by modifying only the first curvature of the cornea. For every refractive error was calculating Zernike polynomials using Optics Software for Layout and Optimization (OSLO) EDU edition with and without contact lens. To calculate the conic constant of the contact lens we use the Seidel sums for thin lenses from the longitudinal spherical aberration as it proposes V. Mahajan. The value of Zernike spherical aberration coefficient for the eye with farsightedness (+ 5.00 D) + spherical contact lens was 0.142691 mu m. The conic constant value to compensate the spherical aberration was -0.222995 and the value of Zernike spherical aberration coefficient of the eye + aspherical contact lens was 0.004354 mu m. The value of Zernike spherical aberration coefficient for the eye with myopia (- 5.00 D) + spherical contact lens was 0.144505 mu m. The conic constant value to compensate the spherical aberration was -0.101424 and the value of Zernike spherical aberration coefficient of the eye + aspherical contact lens was 0.072820 mu m. The proposed method allows us to design contact lenses that compensate for the spherical aberration of the eye from the Zernike polynomials. Although the design of contact lenses is to third order, we obtain a smaller spherical aberration than the chromatic aberration on the axis without use optimization routine.

Abnormal dispersion is found in a large number of optical liquids. These liquids are quite useful in the design of apochromatic lens systems because they are inexpensive and are readily available compared to the expensive abnormal dispersion glasses and crystals more commonly used. Further, there is no practical upper limit on the size of a liquid optical element. However, because the use of these materials as optical elements is quite new, the long term stability of their optical properties after exposure to various environmental conditions must be determined. In this paper, we report on a series of tests performed to determine the optical stability of several abnormal dispersion liquids. The liquids were subjected to: (1) high intensity ultraviolet radiation, (2) high temperatures, and (3) long term exposure to air. Measurements of both optical transmission and refractive index were performed before and after each exposure. The tests were performed on four abnormal dispersion liquids that have been found to be quite useful in the design of apochromatic lenses. The results indicate that long term exposure to either intense ultraviolet radiation or air, produced only negligible changes in the index of refraction. Changes in optical transmission were observed, but they were largely confined to the ultraviolet spectral region. Prolonged exposure to temperatures of 60 degree(s)C did not produce any measurable change in the optical properties. The measurements were performed at the Vavilov State optical Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia, in collaboration with Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory, Palo Alto, California.

Effects of a coating combination, a prism film and a phosphor layer on the short current of the solar cell in the optical solar concentrator and the illuminance of the sunlight passing through the samples were investigated. The optical solar concentrator was a 50 mm x 50 mm x 5 mm B270 thick glass with its sides connected by a solar cell. The prismatic structure of the prism film had a period of 50 mu m. A phosphor Y560 having an absorption band of 390 nm to 500 nm and emitting from 490 nm to 700 nm was prepared. Six coating combinations applied in this study were composed of optical filters and glass. The optical filters included infrared cut-off, magenta, red, green and blue filters. The deflection angle was between 31 and 33 degrees when the incident sunlight passed through the prism film. The short current of the solar cell in the optical solar concentrator with the prism film, the coating combination and the phosphor layer was largest in this study. Experimental results show that the coating is more suitable for enhancing the short current than the phosphor layer in the optical solar concentrator with the prism film. And the phosphor layer can increase the illuminance of the sunlight passing through the samples due to the human eye sensitivity.

A head-mounted display (HMD) requires a large field of view (FOV) and a large exit pupil diameter while maintaining a compact structure. In this paper, we show a head-mounted display design comprising two freeform mirrors covering a 28 degrees full field-of-view with an eye relief of 15mm. The simplified partial differential equation (PDE) method is applied in the design of a two-mirror HMD system. Then the data points on the unknown freeform mirrors are calculated using the rays from multiple fields and are used to construct the freeform mirrors in the HMD system, which is taken as a starting point. This simplified partial differential equation method makes calculations easier. The anamorphic surface and the XY polynomial freeform surface are used in the two freeform mirrors for improving the image quality, respectively. The optimization strategy is also described in detail. The final HMD system operates at F/3.75 with 8mm exit pupil diameter achieving good imaging performance.

Head-up Display (HUD) is a safety feature for automobile drivers. Although there have been some HUD systems in commercial product already, their images are too small to show assistance information. Another problem, the volume of HUD is too large. We proposed a HUD including micro-projectors, rear-projection screen, microlens array (MLA) and the light source is 28 mm x 14 mm realized a 200 mm x 100 mm image in 3 meters from drivers. We want to use the MLA to reduce the volume by virtual image stitching. We design the HUD's package dimensions is 12 cm x 12 cm x 9 cm. It is able to show speed, map-navigation and night vision information. We used Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) as our image source due to its brighter image output required and the minimum volume occupancy. The MLA is a multi aperture system. The proposed MLA consists of many optical channels each transmitting a segment of the whole field of view. The design of the system provides the stitching of the partial images, so that we can see the whole virtual image. (C) 2016 optical Society of America

In conventional imaging, the information transfer from the object to the image plane is accomplished either with the help of a traditional lens that performs a one-to-one mapping or an unconventional lens that performs a one-to-many mapping. In the first case, the image is formed directly, whereas in the second case, the image is formed after a computation. The conventional lens approach is preferred in most cases due to the high signal-to-noise ratio achievable at each image pixel. By appealing to the fact that for most of the imaging applications, it is only the intensity, which is measured by the detector, the phase of the field in the image or focal plane is a free parameter, something that comes from the inverse diffraction transform. Therefore, it is easy to visualize that this phase of the plane wave after it transmits the lens can have multiple forms. Hence, the final choice can be made based upon specific application tailored requirements like achromaticity, depth-of-focus, wide-angle imaging, etc. This concept was exploited to design an achromatic MDL via inverse design across almost the entire electromagnetic spectrum (lambda = 450 nm to 15 mu m). Furthermore, a MDL with a Field Of View (FOV) up to 50 degrees for wide-angle imaging as well as a MDL to enable an extreme Depth of Focus (EDOF) imaging of up to 6 m in the NIR were also designed.

We celebrate the two hundred years of successful use of the Fourier theorem in optics. However, there is a great enigma associated with the Fourier transform integral. It is one of the most pervasively productive and useful tool of physics and optics because its foundation is based on the superposition of harmonic functions and yet we have never declared it as a principle of physics for valid reasons. And, yet there are a good number of situations where we pretend it to be equivalent to the superposition principle of physics, creating epistemological problems of enormous magnitude. The purpose of the paper is to elucidate the problems while underscoring the successes and the elegance of the Fourier theorem, which are not explicitly discussed in the literature. We will make our point by taking six major engineering fields of optics and show in each case why it works and under what restricted conditions by bringing in the relevant physics principles. The fields are (i) optical signal processing, (ii) Fourier transform spectrometry, (iii) classical spectrometry of pulsed light, (iv) coherence theory, (v) laser mode locking and (vi) pulse broadening. We underscore that mathematical Fourier frequencies, not being physical frequencies, cannot generate real physical effects on our detectors. Appreciation of this fundamental issue will open up ways to be innovative in many new optical instrument designs. We underscore the importance of always validating our design platforms based on valid physics principles (actual processes undergoing in nature) captured by an appropriate hypothesis based on diverse observations. This paper is a comprehensive view of the power and limitations of Fourier Transform by summarizing a series of SPIE conference papers presented during 2003-2007.

ITT Industries has developed a precision optical adjustment mechanism capable of ultra-precision adjustment in microradian increments. The success of the Mono-Ball mechanism is its ability to maintain registration after sustaining harsh vibration and thermal environments. This technical paper will detail the Mono-Bah mechanism's opto-mechanical configuration. Supporting test data demonstrates the device's performance in thermal and vibration environments. This Lightweight mechanism was developed for use in spaceflight earth weather observing instruments. However, the Mono-Ball mechanism may be used in numerous optical applications that require ultra-precision adjustment. Although the Mono-Ball mechanism is patent pending(1), this paper presents an overview of the engineering principals utilized in precision mechanisms that the reader may be able to utilize in his or her design project.

We study the formation of caustic surfaces produced by cemented doublet lenses, considering a plane wavefront propagating parallel to the optical axis and neglecting the refractive index of the optical cement between two simple lenses which are in contact. We have already seen that the shape of caustic surfaces can represent the monochromatic aberrations that we call image errors;furthermore the shape of the caustic can be modified by changing the parameters of design for two conic lenses in contact, in such a way that if we are able to vanish the caustic, the optical system produces either an image without spherical aberration or longitudinal chromatic aberration reduced, commonly known as spherochromatism. The shape of the caustic surface is a function of the indices of refraction involved in the process of refraction, and all the parameters of two simple lenses. We provide an analytic equation for the caustic surfaces in a meridional plane and an example is presented.

The paper presents the mathematical description of an optical microscope with a digital camera and an image processing as an analog-digital-analog imaging system. This description considers a channel of the microscope as a sequence of the linear spatial filters of two dimensional signals. The channel contains an optical system as a low frequency analog filter, a digital camera as a low frequency analog filter with spatial and amplitude discretization and noise generation, a digital linear filter which has to amplify the high frequency harmonics and a restoration unit that plays a role of a two dimensional interpolator. This mathematical apparatus is useful for proper selection of a digital camera which guarantees the maximal field of view with absence of image distortions. The terms like optimal, non-sufficient and non-useful (void) linear magnification of a microscope optical system are expanded from a visual microscopy to a digital one. This mathematical description is also applied for selection of a digital filter for focusing and digital focus extension. The modulation transfer function of this filter should match for the spatial spectrum of observed objects in the zone of spatial harmonics that is most sensitive to defocusing. In this case the maximal sensitivity to defocusing with minimization of influence of noise can be reached.
