We present a design and tolerancing approach that permits the achievement of a high degree of spatial and spectral uniformity of response from a pushbroom imaging spectrometer. Such uniformity of response is crucial for the extraction of accurate spectroscopic information from remotely sensed data. The spectrometer system example comprises two independent spectrometer modules covering the 400-2500 nm range, separated through a dichroic mirror. The relative merits of alternative approaches are briefly reviewed before concentrating on the problem of building a flight-worthy system that can approximate its design performance. The tolerancing approach requires simultaneous monitoring of many parameters, and specifically: overall image quality, spectral distortion, spectral MTF variation with field, spatial distortion, spatial MTF variation with wavelength, and slit magnification to within a small fraction of a pixel. It is shown that the wavefront error alone or even supplemented by distortion figures is insufficient for characterizing a system with high response uniformity. Tolerance values on the components and their positioning are primarily guided by the need to achieve the same magnification between the two spectrometer modules, as well as by the interferometric alignment method.

Over the last two decades solid immersion objectives have been developed for various applications, offering the opportunity to achieve a higher resolution than is possible for conventional air objective lenses. For semiconductor applications hemispherical solid immersion lenses (SILs), incorporating tips fabricated in semiconductor materials with a high refractive index (up to n = 3:5 for silicon, for example) are commonly used. With such high refractive index materials it is possible to design an objective with a numerical aperture of NA = 3:2. An apochromatic color correction is mandatory if a broad spectral range from lambda = 1200 nm to lambda = 2000 nm is required. It is well known that glasses with anomalous partial dispersion must be used to realize apochromatic color correction. It will be shown that the anomalous partial dispersions of some glasses in the IR range differ from the known behavior in the visible region. Therefore, glass selection plays a significant role for the design of a high NA broadband IR objective and will be discussed. Monte Carlo tolerance analysis shows that even with state of the art manufacturing capabilities the tolerance induced aberrations of an objective with NA = 3:2 will lead to a dramatic loss of image performance, indicated by a significant drop in the Strehl-ratio. This becomes even worse when the interface of the exchangeable hemispherical SIL tip with the main objective is considered. With the aim to manufacture such objectives within a stable production process it makes no sense to overload the requirements regarding the NA. Therefore, due to manufacturing issues the numerical aperture of this objective has been restricted to NA = 2:9. Wave front measurements of the manufactured objectives shows Strehl-ratios of SR > 97 % which guarantees a diffraction limited resolution.

Infrared optical systems require a range of exotic materials, many with large indices of refraction. The mismatch in the index between the optical element and the surrounding medium can result in reflection losses that approach 50%. Antireflection (AR) coatings are applied to these elements in order to minimize "ghost" reflections and improve the optical transmission through a system. The coatings are designed to be highly transparent;however, significant infrared absorption has been observed in some AR coatings. Likely candidates for the loss mechanism are water trapped into the optical coatings during deposition and water being incorporated into coating voids or grain boundaries during exposure to ambient humidity. Five different AR coatings have been procured from four manufacturers to study the cause of the observed losses. Upon receipt of the coated samples, infrared transmission measurements were made which showed the presence of incorporated water/hydroxyl, as evidenced by reduced transmission around 2.9 mu m. Four of the five sample types placed in laboratory air for two months continued to absorb water, whereas those placed in flowing dry nitrogen showed no change. Samples placed in a humid environment for one, three and ten days also showed additional water incorporation with the magnitude of the change in transmission on the order of that observed with the two-month air exposure.

Multi-beam scanning is the effective method for high speed and high definition in Laser Printing, and there are three systems for this method as fellows. 1) Laser Diode (LD) Array system 2) System for dividing a single light source 3) System for combining beams of multiple LDs by optical devices Each of these systems has both advantage and disadvantage, and which one to use among these three depends on application requirements. The third system above allows for the use of conventional LDs and therefore it is low cost and offers a large degree of freedom in selecting light sources. We have already developed a Two LD Prism-based Light Source Unit that uses a C, prism to combine the beams emitted by two LDs. This system achieves stable optical characteristics with any conventional scanning optical elements. We have further enhanced this system. We have determined an optimum design that includes scanning lens and have developed the Two LD Beam-crossing Light Source Unit which performs multi-beam scanning using two LDs without a prism. In this paper, we report on recent multi-beam-scanning technologies and introduce our newly developed the Two LD Beam-crossing Light Source Unit.

We consider the collinear backward light scattering as one of potential physical mechanisms for creating an advanced collinear acousto-optical filter with significantly improved spectral resolution. Within co-directional crystalline collinear acousto-optical filters, the resolution is inversely proportional to the material's birefringence, which is similar to 0.1 in the best case of LiNbO3-crystal. For the backward light scattering this parameter is replaced by the twice refractive index, so that the gain achieves > 45 times in LiNbO3-crystal. Thus, one can expect the resolution similar to 0.002 angstrom instead of the val similar to 0.1 0.2 recently obtained by us experimentallor co-directional geometry in that crystal. Moreover, the collinear backward light scattering can be implemented in an extended amount of available materials. However, the main limitation for applying the phenomenon is the acoustic attenuation in ultra-high frequency range peculiar to the materials for acousto-optical filters. Linear acoustic attenuation reduces the length of acousto-optical interaction and limits the spectral resolution. At an initial stage, our studies are concentrated on physical aspects of this phenomenon as well as on possibilities of its application to creating the acousto-optical filters of a high resolution. In particular, the frequency band-shapes of the scattered light intensity exhibit a tendency to specific acousto-optical nonlinearity, i.e. to more and more rectangular profile as the acoustic power density grows. Results of this analysis confirm the above-noted estimations for a triplet of trigonal acousto-optical crystals, having possibly lower acoustic attenuation.

Thin films of tungsten oxide (WO3) were deposited on GZO-coated B270 glass substrates and thin films of Ta2O5 were deposited on B270 glass substrates by electron beam gun evaporation at high vacuum pressure of 3x10(-5) Torr and varied oxygen pressures ranging from 1.0x10(-4) to 6.0x10(-4) Torr. The optical properties of the electro-chromic (EC) film were measured by a spectrophotometer. The optical modulation (Delta T) of the tungsten oxide thin film deposited at an oxygen pressure of 1.0x10(-4) Torr was found to be Delta T = 67.46% at lambda=550nm. The optimum optical properties for deposition of Ta2O5 were attained at an oxygen pressure of 4x10(-4) Torr. Gallium doped zinc oxide (GZO) was used as a conductive layer instead of ITO. A five layer EC device (Glass/GZO/WO3/Ta2O5/NiO/Al) has been design and fabricated.

Now in Phase-B, the architecture of the Wide-Field Infra-Red Survey Telescope (WFIRST) payload has matured since 2013 to accommodate various opto-mechanical constraints. Based on a 2.4-meter aperture Forward optical Assembly (FOA), the Imaging Optics Assembly (IOA) provides corrected optical fields to each on-board instrument. Using a Three Mirror Anastigmat (TMA) optical design, the Wide-Field Channel (WFC) provides similar to 1/3-square degree of instantaneous field coverage at 0.11 arcsecond pixel scale. The WFC as-built predictive analysis anticipates near diffraction-limited imaging over a focal plane of 300.8 million pixels, operating in seven panchromatic bands between 0.48 -2.0 mu m, or a 1-octive multi-spectral imaging mode from similar to 0.95-1.93 mu m. The IOA provides the Coronagraph Instrument (CGI) a collimated beam with very specific wavefront constraints. We present configuration changes since 2013 that improved interfaces, improved testability, and reduced technical risk. We provide an overview of our Integrated Modeling results, performed at an unprecedented level for a phase-A study, to illustrate performance margins with respect to static wavefront error, jitter, and thermal drift.

A hyperspectral imaging system is proposed for early study of skin diagnosis. A stable and high hyperspectral image quality is important for analysis. Therefore, a light guide sleeve (LGS) was designed for the embedded on a hyperspectral imaging system. It provides a uniform light source on the object plane with the determined distance. Furthermore, it can shield the ambient light from entering the system and increasing noise. For the purpose of producing a uniform light source, the LGS device was designed in the symmetrical double-layered structure. It has light cut structures to adjust distribution of rays between two layers and has the Lambertian surface in the front-end to promote output uniformity. In the simulation of the design, the uniformity of illuminance was about 91.7%. In the measurement of the actual light guide sleeve, the uniformity of illuminance was about 92.5%.

For realization of a miniaturized optical gyroscope the precise assembly of optical micro components is crucial. To detect the rotation rate the laser beam must circulate many times and not leave the resonator due to small misalignments. The assembly of a passive free space triangular ring resonator in which the light can circulate by reflections at three mirrors is investigated. The beam path encloses an area of about 100 mm(2). The resonator shall be activated by an external light source at 1550 nm, a wavelength at which silicon is translucent and allowing to couple light into the resonator through the silicon mirrors. To utilize an inherent mirror alignment two of the mirrors are fabricated with a micro manufacturing process within the same crystal by wet etching resulting in very perfect {111} facets. The etching solution was optimized with respect to process time and smoothness of the mirror surfaces. To further increase the reflectivity of the mirrors different kinds of coatings are tested. With these two perfectly positioned mirrors the assembly challenge reduces to 3DOF alignment of a third {100} mirror for which a well-designed adjustable spacer is developed. In first tests resonance in a linear cavity test setup is demonstrated already.

Results of measurements of the total hemispherical reflectance (THR), emissivity c and solar radiation absorption factor alpha(s) of the Al-Cr stray-light-absorptive coating are reported. This coating was designed to reduce the stray sunlight background in aerospace instruments. Generally, this problem arises when a density of instruments installed on the satellite is high and it is difficult to avoid getting to instrument the light reflected by neighboring devices. The THR, epsilon and alpha(s) measurement results are presented for 10 wavelengths within a range from. 400 to 927 nm, and also at 121.6 nm, the most intensive line of the solar UV spectrum, which is able to create considerable contribution to the detector noise in space devices. The goal of present experiments was to test an idea that by providing the electron scattering in the coating skin layer, it is possible to reduce the THR. To have the samples with increased electron scattering intensity, the samples of the Al-Cr coating were manufactured. As in the Al-Cr alloy the d-band of chromium electrons is located in the vicinity of the Fermi energy of Al, in this alloy a considerable electron scattering takes place. Therefore, within the skin layer of such coating, the electrons excited by photons transfer their energies and momenta to the lattice and other electrons instead of releasing the secondary photons. Hence, the reflectivity of the Al-Cr coating might be reduced. The prepared samples and performed experiments confirmed this assumption. According to the measurement results, the chromium appears to be an acceptable additional admixture to provide a further reflectivity reduction in the previously studied promising Al-N coating.
