Holographic display elements (HOEs) with a high diffraction efficiency and size enlargement have been developed since 2019. To achieve high brightness and low haze, unprecedented optical systems have been proposed with a uniform chief ray angle of 0 degrees in the x-section and 70 degrees in the y-section of the HOEs. A 360 degrees cylindrical holographic screen display (CHSD) was obtained by providing a large tilt to the surface shape near the optical axis. This was done using a first-order odd aspherical coefficient for the light flux from a refractive optical system (RO). A flat holographic screen display (FHSD) is a compact, high-performance display that uses three decentered and tilted freeform mirrors to route light flux from the RO in a ball-like form. Prototyping also proposes the possibility of an augmented reality system that takes advantage of the high transparency. The design for further miniaturization while maintaining optical performance was also discussed, in which the size of the first mirror was reduced by reducing the half-field angle of the RO to approximately 6 degrees. Furthermore, by increasing the negative power of the second mirror, the small size could be maintained The size of the last mirror was dependent on the screen size and could not be reduced. By laying down the posture of this mirror, we were able to halve the size reduction in the vertical direction. In this paper, lens designs for CHSDs and FHSDs are reported. The potential of this display is also discussed.

Refractive optics has evolved and incorporated new elements in optical systems every day, such as conventional lenses, tunable lenses, GRIN lenses, diffractive lenses, intraocular lenses, etc. Some of these elements are reported in the literature together with different proposed models of the human eye. In this work, optical properties of some of these lenses will be studied, and simulations of their behavior will be done in order to analyze which one is better for imaging process. Such lenses will be incorporated in an optical system that mimics the human eye behavior. Analysis and obtained results are reported, as well as the proposed optical system. Finally, we present the conclusions of the work.

A mathematical approach for the third order solution for a general zoom lens design is proposed. The design starts with a first-order layout. lens elements with the proper refracting power are placed at the proper distances to meet the physical constraints of the intended lens system. For the third-order design stage, a matrix notation called "Aberration Polynomial," which clarifies the linearity of the transformation from a normal thin group configuration to a general thin,group configuration by pupil shift and conjugate shift theory is implemented. The purpose of the method is correcting low-order aberrations during the preliminary design of zoom lenses. The goal is to mathematically reduce to zero the four aberration coefficients of the third-order (spherical aberration, coma, astigmatism, and distortion) rather than searching for a minimum by commercial design software. Once this theory is proven and accepted, it becomes possible to determine how many groups are needed for a particular optical system. The method of aberration polynomials establishes the number of groups needed to correct a given number of aberrations at a Given number of zoom positions. Furthermore, it provides the shape or bending of the elements, from where it will be possible to continue to optimize with standard methods.

In ultra-precision (distortion <0.5%) vision inspection system, the accuracy of measurement depends on sharpness and distortion of image. The telecentric lens provides distortion-free and constant magnification (within depth of field) image, so it has become an indispensable key module in the amount of visual measuring system. The article presents a design and development of telecentric lens module for the wide range of vision inspection system (field-of-view >100 mm). Based on the concept of equivalent design in optical tolerances, the lens module can be designed readily into a telecentric system, which consists of five spherical lenses and a glass molded aspheric lens. In order to correct image distortion, an aspheric lens would be added to the telecentric system. The experiment shows that the distortion can be reduced from 1.5% to 0.34% and the depth of field (DOF) is also improved up to 28.3 mm.

Changes in the shape of large lens elements due to the influences of gravity are important to consider in the fabrication, testing and assembly of optical systems. Tried and proven methods used for mounting large mirrors to minimize the effects of gravity are typically not applicable to large transmissive lens elements, due to the simple requirement that the clear aperture of a lens must remain free of mechanical obstructions. Precautions must be taken to ensure that an element's surfaces are correctly fabricated and then maintained when assembled into the final system. The amount of distortion caused by the weight of a particular lens element is dependent on a number of factors including: size, aspect ratio, shape, material, and the support on which it rests. Examples of the effects of these factors are modeled using Finite Element Analysis and demonstrated through interferometric testing. Attention is given to the mounting of lens elements within a system and simulating "real-world" conditions. These "real-world" conditions can produce results that are different from what was expected if only ideal cases have been considered. The work presented will aid the designer, fabricator, and metrologist to identify what optical elements and mounting conditions may be problematic and to minimize their effects.

The characteristics of a new twin-track absolute position optical encoder are presented. One track containing a pseudorandom code and the second a periodic pattern are synchronously engraved on a glass slab. The optical reading head design composed of a LED, a gradient index lens and a linear CCD array, with simple intensity-based signal processing to read the code pattern is described in detail. This design is combined with a standard Moire method to enhance resolution. Performance enhancement of the optical reading head is studied in terms of track illumination versus code density, detector geometry versus the lens point-spread function (Airy disk);and reduction of extrinsic spatial noise by the application of thick films. Each parameter was considered in terms of the optimal field of view and depth of field of the system. © 1994 SPIE. All rights reserved.

Non-imaging integrators which can be used for laser beam homogenization in materials processing with excimer laser radiation are analysed with regards to geometrical and statistical optics. A model for the transversal degree of coherence of the laser radiation is presented in order to estimate the performance of the integrating devices for the partially coherent excimer laser radiation. This is necessary for a more relevant design of those elements than a design by geometric optical means only. The concept of non-imaging integrators is enhanced by separating the multifaceted element from the focusing lens. This separation provides more flexibility in the processing distance of the optical system. A further enhancement is the combination of such a system with an imaging lens in order to create a system which produces a top hat fluence distribution with variable size for materials processing applications.

The design of a secondary optical lens for light beam shaping using the transformation method is performed by transforming the light source energy distribution using the concepts of energy conservation and light energy mapping. Using these concepts creates a dependency relation between the output optical performance and the luminous intensity distribution of the light source. This relation leads to errors on the optical performance due to the fabrication misalignment between the light source and the secondary optical lens. On the other hand, in the illumination applications, the integration method has been proved to be an efficient method for achieving a high degree of homogenized luminous intensity distribution by integrating and superimposing the light source energy over the illuminated objects. In signal lighting applications, the luminous intensity distribution must meet the requirements regarding the brightness perception of users over the spatial angular distribution, not the illumination of objects. In this paper, the integration method is combined with the transformation method to design a refractive lens-array for signal lighting applications. The difference between the two methods is described, presenting the advantages of the combination process. design procedures are explained in detail including the lens-array modeling. The optical performance is investigated using an optical ray tracing. Finally, the influence of the misalignment between the light source and the refractive lens-array is measured.

Recent times have seen the production of normal and micro liquid lenses with variable focal length. These have been specially made with transparent elastic materials and liquid medium between them, or with a dielectric liquid medium inside the cavity. Change in the volume of the liquid medium, in the first case, or the application of an electric field as in the second, produced a change in the optical parameters of the lens. The present study offers the opto-mechanical design, manufacture and characterization of a solid elastic lens made of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). To do so, we have prepared a mechanical support frame to hold all of the components of the lens and also allow for the application of radial stress on its periphery. In order to ensure a well-finished lens surface a high quality optical glass mold has also been constructed. Finally, we will present an analysis of the properties of this type of lens when it undergoes variations of radial stress. The experimental results are presented.

We develop a method for the calculation of the integrals arising in the diffraction theory of aberrations. This method is developed from in a previous one based in the division of the diffracting aperture in semiperiodic zones, which enabled the exact calculation of the Point-Spread Function of an optical system. By a careful analysis of the integration process and of the properties of the semiperiodic zones, we develop a set of formulae that give an approximate value of the result of the diffraction integrals. This permits to avoid the numerical calculation of the integrals, which is a computationally intensive procedure and enables a substantial reduction of the computation times. The method has been tested on aberration-free optical systems and real optical systems and has shown a good accuracy, although some minor problems require further investigation.
