Injection molded optics are frequently applied in many high volume applications. Bar code scanners.. CD / DVD systems, CMOS cameras are a few examples. In all of these applications cost effective and fast design cycles are essential. At Philips High Tech Plastics we developed a design system that touches on all different aspects of the system design. Starting with traditional lens design (sequential ray tracing) and tolerancing we transport the initial design into mechanical solid modeling. During mechanical modeling, tolerances, injection molding design rules and integration of mechanical features, reference marks, etc. are incorporated as well. Here the full advantage of injection molding can be utilized. After the opto - mechanical modeling the system is ported back to non - sequential ray tracing for ghost - and stray light analysis. Finally extended tolerancing is performed in order to come to a robust high volume product. If necessary all or several steps in this design process are repeated in order to arrive at the final design. As an additional requirement the metrology possibilities for the design are checked at an early stage. This integral system approach to optical design, including optical modeling (sequential and non-sequential) combined with mechanical solid modeling is presented using some recent examples.

The modulation transfer function (MTF) in lens systems can be simulated using rendering. Here, the MTF is obtained by rendering test charts with bar target patterns after they are passed through an optical imaging system. The benefit of this method is that it can be applied to shift-variant systems, to which it is difficult to apply the point spread function (PSF), and that it enables the comparison of theoretical results to experimental results when test charts are imaged through an optical imaging system. However, the number of sampled rays must be increased to suppress the variance in the resulting radiance distribution, and the computation time increases proportionally with the number of analyzed spatial frequencies. This report proposes the recording of the light field of light rays, which is a function describing light rays at the entrance pupil. Focused images are compiled for each test chart based on the recorded light field. The time necessary for compilation is significantly shorter than for ray tracing in a lens;therefore, the radiance distribution can be rapidly obtained when the spatial frequency is changed. The methodology to record the light field and the data format are outlined in this report.

Aspherical glass or plastic lenses are usually adapted in the camera module of handheld phone. Recently, slimmer cameras are required according to reducing thickness of handheld phone. In this paper, we present an ultra slim camera module using multiple freeform off-axis imaging lenses. New optical concept of multiple lens system introduces the planar optics with freeform. shaped aspherical lens surface on the wafer, which can achieve the thickness of 50% compared to the conventional symmetric lens system. In order to achieve the resolution specification, we separate the field of view in camera module. As the result, two inverted images are produced on a same imaging sensor and the acquired inverted images are processed by photo stitching algorithm so as to combine them. Finally, in order to verify the new imaging system, we manufacture the new slim lens through the LJV embossing replication process. We found the new imaging system is feasible for VGA resolution and it can be expandable to the high resolution system.

A traditional zoom system is composed of several elements moving relatively toward other components to achieve zooming. Unlike tradition system, an electrically control zoom system with liquid crystal (LC) lenses is demonstrated in this paper. To achieve zooming, we apply two LC lenses whose optical power is controlled by voltage to replace two moving lenses in traditional zoom system. The mechanism of zoom system is to use two LC lenses to form a simple zoom system. We found that with such spherical electrodes, we could operate LC lens at voltage range from 31V to 53 V for 3X tunability in optical power. For each LC lens, we use concave spherical electrode which provide lower operating voltage and great tunability in optical power, respectively. For such operating voltage and compact size, this zoom system with zoom ratio approximate 3: 1 could be applied to mobile phone, camera and other applications.

In this paper, different optical designs, which are composed of different LWIR optical materials, are utilized for passive athermalization and their performance in athermalization are analyzed. The optical designs are carried out by preserving the athermal property as well as keeping the image quality at higher levels within the working temperature between -40 degrees C and +60 degrees C. Our designs consist of two different infrared optical elements to maintain the focus positions as stable as possible within the working temperature. The passive athermalization process begins with the calculation of athermalization conditions of candidate material properties. By taking into account these conditions, athermal material pairs are chosen. The optical design begins with an optimization process using paraxial optics. In order to reduce aberrations such as coma, astigmatism, spherical and chromatic, aspherical surfaces are utilized during the optimization process. At the end of the design phase, the performance of different configurations of athermal optical material pairs, which are enclosed by aluminum alloy housing material, are presented.

Reconfigurable diffractive lenses manufactured in liquid crystal are presented. The lenses show an unprecedented performance in terms of active diameter and focal distance range when compared to any other transparent adaptive lens. The lenses are characterized by an active area free of electronic components, with a fill factor of 98% which combined with a low operating voltage (<10V(rms)), open for applications ranging from eye contact lenses to space applications. The addressing of the liquid crystal is done exclusively from the periphery of the device. The lenses are based on tunable spiral diffractive lenses (SDL) for which the focal length may be changed by changing the topological charge, i.e. twist of the spiral in the lens. The twist in the resulting wavefront is eliminated by cascading two spiral plates with opposite twists emulating a conventional diffractive lens. The presented lenses have a tuning range from -2 to +2 diopters and an active diameter of 25mm.

High definition and magnification rigid endoscope is a significant equipment in the examination and surgery. In this paper, the design of a high definition (HD) rigid endoscope with zero viewing direction is presented with a FOV of 70. The entrance pupil is 0.3 mm, achieved for the first time to our best knowledge. For the fabricated prototype, the theoretical resolution is 22.3 lp/mm at an object distance of 20 mm, and the depth of field (DOF) is 115 mm The performance is proved to be great for observation during diagnosis and surgery. Besides, the endoscope with non-zero viewing direction is more needful in some conditions such as observing and diagnosing lesions on inner walls of organs and tissues. In this paper, we present two designs with non-zero viewing direction for better applications.

In the past two decades, to realize high resolutions and low distortions while miniaturizing optical systems, various ultrashort throw lenses (USTs) have been proposed. In this work, ultrashort throw lenses with a catadioptric relay (USTCRs) with rotational symmetry are proposed to provide the solution. First, the initial design method of the USTCR and the optimized design solution are presented. Although this optical system with a throw ratio of 0.26:1 has resolutions and distortions equivalent to those of conventional UST with one aspherical mirror, the depth of focus (DOF) on the panel side becomes 1.31 times deeper with appropriate corrections of the field curvature. The total length of the lens is reduced to 0.89 times, the area of the main mirror is reduced to 0.22 times, and the number of lenses is reduced from 13 to 9 elements. Based on these results, several optical designs for USTCR have been tried and an optical design with robustness has been proposed. By optimizing the power of each lens group, the decenter sensitivity improved to 0.46 times for parallel decenter and 0.55 times for tilt decenter. By optimizing glass materials, the shift of focal plane can be suppressed to 0.56 times when the temperature increases by 30 degrees C. An USTCR suited for a curved screen has also been proposed. By introducing appropriate constraints that correct distortions, high resolutions and low distortions have been realized while maintaining a wide angle of view. USTCRs suited for various curved screens are currently underway.

The diffractive optical element (DOE) is always modeled as an ideal pure diffractive clement which neglects the refractive dispersion of the clement's material. In this paper, a new model of the diffractive optical element is proposed, in which the effect of the refractive dispersion of the DOE's material is considered. The new model is explained and compared with standard diffraction-order expansion with the help of a hybrid system example. The analytical results show that the new model has an important meaning for the exact analysis of the hybrid refractive-diffractive optical system.

The paper presents the mathematical technique for precise calculation of the three dimensional point spread function (3D PSF) of a high aperture optical system. The proposed technique is based on Huygens-Fresnel principle: a spherical wave at an exit pupil is considered as a numerous set of elementary secondary light sources. They emit spherical coherent electro-magnetic waves. All these waves form a definite distribution of summarized complex amplitudes in a three dimensional space near a focal point. This distribution is used for calculation of the distribution of effective intensity which takes into account the influence of inclined optical beams. The comparison analysis of this approach and the techniques based on multi-dimensional Fourier transforms are discussed.
