We consider the collinear backward light scattering as one of potential physical mechanisms for creating an advanced collinear acousto-optical filter with significantly improved spectral resolution. Within co-directional crystalline collinear acousto-optical filters, the resolution is inversely proportional to the material's birefringence, which is similar to 0.1 in the best case of LiNbO3-crystal. For the backward light scattering this parameter is replaced by the twice refractive index, so that the gain achieves > 45 times in LiNbO3-crystal. Thus, one can expect the resolution similar to 0.002 angstrom instead of the val similar to 0.1 0.2 recently obtained by us experimentallor co-directional geometry in that crystal. Moreover, the collinear backward light scattering can be implemented in an extended amount of available materials. However, the main limitation for applying the phenomenon is the acoustic attenuation in ultra-high frequency range peculiar to the materials for acousto-optical filters. Linear acoustic attenuation reduces the length of acousto-optical interaction and limits the spectral resolution. At an initial stage, our studies are concentrated on physical aspects of this phenomenon as well as on possibilities of its application to creating the acousto-optical filters of a high resolution. In particular, the frequency band-shapes of the scattered light intensity exhibit a tendency to specific acousto-optical nonlinearity, i.e. to more and more rectangular profile as the acoustic power density grows. Results of this analysis confirm the above-noted estimations for a triplet of trigonal acousto-optical crystals, having possibly lower acoustic attenuation.

This study presents the methods for designing an expander lens for an MWIR zoom lens through the third-order aberration analysis and evaluating the optical zoom system. This expander lens is used to enlarge the focal lengths of an original main zoom lens two times, which unfortunately doubles the aperture size of the expander lens elements. Thus, this extended apertures significantly generate the aberrations of a zoom system. To solve the problem, an expander lens has been designed using the third-order aberration analysis numerically. Since an MWIR optical system uses a cooled detector, this zoom system should be designed to eliminate the narcissus effect. Using this design approach, we efficiently obtain an expander lens for an MWIR zoom system satisfying the current requirements.

Due to increasing environmental limitations on the use of certain raw materials used to make optical glasses, there is now an economic desire to minimize the number of glasses used in lensdesign. This paper presents the results of a study to create a suggested universal catalogue that contains the minimum number of glasses needed to satisfy most possible lensdesigns. A nearly symmetric double Gauss lens is used in the glass selection process. As part of this study, the relationship between the error function and the number of glasses chosen is studied, and in addition, a glass range study is also carried out. Three different lens libraries were studied using the global optimization method and the most frequently chosen glasses were then compiled into the suggested universal glass catalogue. A suggested universal glass catalogue constructed from this study is presented.
