Receiver field of regard is one of the major problems for free space optical (FSO) communications. Drift or vibrations in transceiver orientations reduces effective communication time. The methods implemented to overcome this limitation, often require bulky optical and complex mechanical assemblies with feedback control, that are not suitable for long run operation in an airborne system. In this paper, we propose a novel receiver system that can effectively reduce the impact of pointing errors. The system is composed of two metalenses and one off-the-shelf conventional lens. The first metalens focuses optical beam incident at different angles on the aperture, at different locations on focal plane. The second metalens is placed on the focal plane of first metalens. After passing through the second metalens, the beams become parallel to optical axis of the receiver optical system. The parallel beams are collected by a suitable off-the-shelf aspheric lens and focused back on single detector that sits on a point on the optical axis. The system is designed and analyzed by physical optics theory. With 0.5 mm receiver aperture and 50 mm diameter aspheric lens, Zemax simulation shows that the system can collect +/-5-degree incident angle with detector diameter of 273 mu m. COMSOL frequency domain simulation with smaller diameter beam shows that the efficiency of the 2 metalens system is about 80%. Efficient metalens design and beam compression at detector plane are two key features of the proposed system. The system relaxes the strict requirement of aligning the transmitter and receiver unit in FSO communication.

In optical design, the designer's experience is critical. Indeed, an experienced optical designer will often choose a better starting point for optimization than an inexperienced one. Most of the time, lens design software use a local optimization algorithm, which is why the starting point is so important to get an excellent optical system. We present here an alternative to the classical optical design method and a solution to reduce the impact of the designer's experience. Our alternative couples the Simultaneous Multiple Surfaces (SMS) method, introduced by Benitez and Minano with optimization in Zemax OpticStudio. The SMS method is a direct construction method of optical systems without optical aberrations for as many field points as the system contains surfaces. This method can deal with both aspheric and freeform optical systems depending on the dimension of the method implemented. Our implementation of the SMS method can design optical systems with three surfaces. We use the SMS method to define a freeform system with an F-number of 0.85. Then, we use this fast freeform system as a starting point to perform further optimization in Zemax OpticStudio. Finally, we achieve to design two diffraction-limited freeform systems, one over a square field of view of +/- 30 degrees and another over a rectangular field of view of +/- 33 degrees x +/- 26 degrees.

New panoramic and immersive digital imaging developments have generated increased interest in high performance fisheye camera lenses suitable for 35 mm single lens reflex (SLR) cameras. Special concerns for such applications are the uniformity of illumination and radial image mapping. Because two hemispherical images are digitally stitched together to form a complete 360-degree x 180-degree image, the performance of the lens at the 90 degree (preferably more than 90 degree) edge of the fisheye image is just as important as the center of the image. Lateral color, high order distortion (edge compression) and severe drop-off of illumination at the full field become obvious image defects and cause seams in the immersive image. Fisheye lens designs have widely varying relative illumination and distortion across the hemispherical field of view of the lens. After describing the contributing factors to relative illumination, we survey a collection of fisheye designs and compare their illumination performance, radial mapping and lateral color. A new method of measuring relative illumination and radial mapping in the laboratory is described and results on commercially available fish-eye lenses are presented.

In present-day optical system design, it is tacitly assumed that local minima are points in the merit function landscape without relationships between them. We will show however that there is a certain degree of order in the design landscape and that this order is best observed when we change the dimensionality of the optimization problem and when we consider not only local minima, but saddle points as well. We have developed earlier a computational method for detecting saddle points numerically, and a method, then applicable only in a special case, for constructing saddle points by adding lenses to systems that are local minima. The saddle point construction method will be generalized here and we Will show how, by performing a succession of one-dimensional calculations, many local minima of a given global search can be systematically obtained from the set of local minima corresponding to systems with fewer lenses. As a simple example, the results of the Cooke triplet global search will be analyzed. In this case, the vast majority of the saddle points found by our saddle point detection software can in fact be obtained in a much simpler way by saddle point construction, starting from doublet local minima.

In this paper, we present an optical design of a near-infrared (at FeI 15648.5 Angstrom) birefringent filter system which is used to obtain the chromatic images of the sun and measure the solar magnetic field at the Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO). This system consists of a prefilter, a liquid crystal analyzer, a wavelength-tunable birefringent filter and a Fabry-Perot Etalon. This system is expected to achieve a clean narrow pass band (1/8 Angstrom). It can also be tuned across the spectral line to obtain line profiles of two-dimensional fields of view. During the design of the tunable near-IR birefringent filter and the test of its components, we found the value of birefringence index mu (n(e) - n(o)) of calcite at spectral range near 15648.5 Angstrom is very different from the value in literature(1). Because the birefringence index is important for the design of birefringent optical components, the birefringence index of calcite and its thermal coefficient are measured. Some test results of the four pairs of calcite prate used in the birefringent filter are presented.

We have developed near-infrared imaging equipment that can detect small organic substances in foodstuffs with thicknesses of more than 1 mm. The equipment is composed of a high output laser diode and a CMOS camera. The irradiated light power distribution was highly uniform with a maximum optical density of 1.3 W/cm(2). A 0.3-mm-diameter wooden stick covered with a 2-mm-thick layer of ham can easily be distinguished in the images. The bones in fish and in chicken wing sticks could also be distinguished. The thicknesses of the fish and the chicken wing sticks were approximately 30 mm and 20 mm, respectively. We eliminated the low spatial frequency components from the images to improve the image contrast.

The Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) is one of the instruments slated to fly on the EOS Aura satellite in 2003. TES is a Fourier transform spectrometer designed to measure the concentration of various tropospheric chemical species. The Focal Plane Opto-Mechanical Assemblies (FPOMAs) are situated at the end of the TES optical train and are comprised of cryogenic telescopes, reimaging optics, and focal planes. We present the cryogenic optical design of the FPOMA units and discuss optimization parameters and predicted performance. We present measured performance data and compare it with the predicted performance.

FORMOSAT-5 is the first space program that National Space Organization (NSPO) takes full responsibility for the complete satellite system engineering design including payload(s). FORMOSAT-5 will operate in a sun synchronous orbit at 720-km altitude with 98.28-degree inclination angle. The optical Remote Sensing Instrument (RSI) can provide 2-m resolution panchromatic and 4-m resolution multi-spectral images. A Cassegrain type of RSI with two reflective aspheric mirrors and spherical corrector lens is designed. The space thermal environment is one of the important factors that affect the image quality of a space optical RSI. Thermal deformation of RSI structure and mirrors will impact the optical performance. Some preliminary thermal and opto-mechanical analyses are conducted. The relationship among temperature distributions, thermal deformations and image degradation of on-orbit behaviors are discussed. The thermal induced instabilities are incorporated in optical models (e.g., OSLO) by use of Zernike polynomial coefficients to calculate the system MTF and WFE. Due to different thermal environments, on-orbit optical performances depend on imaging locations. Detailed studies and discussions are done in this paper to identify the major sources of thermal deformations and their impacts on image quality.

A technique for decomposing the optical Transfer Function (OTF) into a novel set of basis functions has been developed. The decomposition provides insight into the performance of optical systems containing both wavefront error and apodization, as well as the interactions between the various components of the pupil function. Previously, this technique has been applied to systems with circular pupils with both uniform illumination and Gaussian apodization. Here, systems with annular pupils are explored. In cases of annular pupil with simple defocus, analytic expressions for the OTF decomposition coefficients can be calculated. The annular case is not only applicable to optical systems with central obscurations, but the technique can be extended to systems with multiple ring structures. The ring structures can have constant area as is often found in zone plates and diffractive lenses or the rings can have arbitrary areas. Analytic expressions for the OTF decomposition coefficients again can be determined for ring structures with constant and quadratic phase variations. The OTF decomposition provides a general tool to analyze and compare a diverse set of optical systems.

Retinal images are obtained by simultaneously illuminating and imaging the retina, which is achieved using a fundus camera. This device meets low light illumination of the fundus with high resolution and reflection free images. Although the current equipment presents a sophisticated solution, it is complex to align due to the high number of off-axis components. In this work, we substitute the complex illumination system by a ring of LEDs mounted coaxially to the imaging optical system, positioning it in the place of the holed mirror of the traditional optical design. We evaluated the impact of this substitution regarding to image quality (measured through the modulation transfer function) and illumination uniformity produced by this system on the retina. The results showed there is no change in image quality and no problem was detected concerning uniformity compared to the traditional equipment. Consequently, we avoided off-axis components, easing the alignment of the equipment without reducing both image quality and illumination uniformity.
