A Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) consists of an array of e.g. 1024 x 786 small micromirrors. Each of these mirrors has a size of 16 mum and can be individually switched to an angle of either +10 degrees or -10 degrees. Depending on how these micromirror pixels are switched various reflected patterns or images can be projected digitally when the DMD is properly illuminated. Whereas classical applications for DMDs include digital image- and video-projection, further applications in the field of optical metrology are possible as well. Since the DMD can also act as a pinhole, a new type of optical surface-profiler resembling a confocal microscope but using the DMD for flexible illumination and lateral scanning of the specimen has currently been set up at the Fraunhofer IPT. There are various process-parameters that influence the measurement, among these are e.g. pinhole-size, pinhole-shape, lateral step-size and the number of pinholes used simultaneously. With the presented instrument these process-parameters can not only be easily configured for individual measurements by simply programming the DMD, but also adaptive control of these parameters during the measurement may be achieved. The paper explains basics of DMD technology and confocal microscopy, illustrates the principle of the newly designed instrument, discusses difficulties and shows first results achieved with a set-up demonstrator.

For the first time, developed are sphere-shaped precision diamond micropowders ASMV-RM having a number of unique properties - advanced, ordered crystal structure, improved surface morphology, maximal hardening of crystals with increase wear-resistant, with high uniformity of grains and in physico-mechanical properties, with absence of needle, sharp-angled crystals. These exclusive properties enable to provide the considerable increase of productivity of processes at essential improvement of surface quality during thin grinding and polishing of products by these micropowders. They are outside of a competition to the standard marks of diamonds of general purpose as were created for new highly perspective areas of applications focused on high technologies in electronics, optics and other branches of modem engineering. In precision micropowders ASMV-RM enormous potential of diamonds is realized. The technology of precision diamond micropowders preparation is based on results of the scientific school by Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine V.I. Trefilov and complex approach directed on deepened influence on a material with application of modem effective technologies and the optimum technical solutions. The technology of their manufacture is referred to high technologies, and precision micropowders have created a new direction in diamond branch. Real conditions for realization of technical revolution in creation and use of a new class precision diamond micropowders are now created.

256×256 diffractive microlens arrays have been designed by considering the independent optical and processing parameters for 3-5 μm wavelength with a microlens size of 100 μm. The lens F number and array pitch are 1.5 and 100 μm, respectively. The diffractive microlens arrays have been fabricated on the surface of Si substrates by successive photolithography and Ar+ ion-beam-etching technique. The practical processes and fabrication method are discussed. The optical characteristics and measurements of the diffractive microlens arrays are presented.

The Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) project, currently underway, requires a camera mated to a 1.3 meter Cassegrain telescope that will simultaneously image the J, H and Ks spectral bands onto three separate NICMOS3 HgCdTe detector arrays. Dichroic beamsplitters allow the three FPA's to view the same field simultaneously. This paper reviews the development of this camera, presents a detailed analysis of the optical design, and discusses the techniques used to align the instrument and evaluate its performance. The low irradiance of astronomical sources, combined with background limited performance of the detectors, mandated a reimaging configuration and the enclosure of the camera optics within the cold volume. Correcting chromatic aberrations, and minimizing ghost images were additional challenges imposed by program requirements. The key to achieving high performance was found to be the selection of lens materials. The final F/3.5 optical design uses fifteen CaF2 elements and four Infrasil elements in an all-spherical configuration. The design is diffraction limited over the full format in the Ks spectral band, and is nearly so in the J and H bands. The tolerance environment is benign, making the design well suited for use in a cryogenic environment. A single channel prototype has been built and extensively field tested at the 50-inch telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. Each channel in the multi-spectral camera uses the same optical design successfully demonstrated in the prototype. currently, the first of two three-channel cameras is undergoing lab tests for image quality and channel registration.

Non-mechanical variable lenses are important for creating compact imaging devices. Various methods employing dielectrically actuated lenses, membrane lenses, and/or liquid crystal lenses were previously proposed(1-4). Here we present tunable-focus flat liquid crystal diffractive lenses (LCDL) employing binary Fresnel zone electrodes fabricated on Indium-Tin-Oxide using conventional micro-photolithography. The phase levels can be adjusted by varying the effective refractive index of a nematic liquid crystal sandwiched between the electrodes and a reference substrate. Using a proper voltage distribution across various electrodes the focal length can be changed. Electrodes are shunted such that the correct phase retardation step sequence is achieved. If the number of 2 pi zone boundaries is increased by a factor of m the focal length is changed from f to f/m based on the digitized Fresnel zone equation: f = r(m)(2)/2m lambda, where r(m) is m(th) zone radius, and lambda is the wavelength. The lenses operate at very low voltage levels (+/- 2.5V ac input), exhibit fast switching times (20-150 ms), can have large apertures (> 10 mm), and small form factor, and are robust and insensitive to vibrations, gravity, and capillary effects that limit membrane and dielectrically actuated lenses. Several tests were performed on the LCDL including diffraction efficiency measurement, switching dynamics, and hybrid imaging with a refractive lens. Negative focal lengths are achieved by adjusting the voltages across electrodes. Using these lenses in combination, magnification can be changed and zoom lenses can be formed. The promising results make LCDL a good candidate for non-mechanical auto-focus and zoom lenses.

Projection systems comprising micromechanical. scanning mirrors are a promising approach for information display of any kind. If combined with advanced laser diodes as light sources, ultra-compact projection heads can be realized, as it will be shown in this contribution. Besides the laser, key component of the system is a special MEMS device, a two-dimensional resonant micro scanning mirror. The laser beam formed by collimator optics is directed onto the micro scanning mirror. Then, the reflected beam describes a highly complicated Lissajous figure on the projection screen with flare angles of up to 20 degrees. By driving the mirror and electrically modulating the intensity of the laser beam in a synchronous manner, projection of images can be achieved. Advanced techniques that guarantee improved image quality and allow compensation of artifacts because of relative movement between projection head, screen, and human observer will be described. Based on these principles, several optoelectronic systems have been designed. A monochrome projection head that incorporates the laser diode, optics and the micro mirror could be reduced to a volume of 15mm x 7 mm x 5mm. A slightly larger head is attached to a laser unit with red, green, and blue lasers via glass optical fiber for projection of full color images and video streams. All systems have VGA (640 x 480 pixels) resolution. They operate with 8 bit color depth per pixel and 50 frames per second. These key features in combination with the miniaturized size allow their use for a broad range of applications.

The direct ophthalmoscope, a handheld device gives a highly magnified image of the retina. However, the sustainability of power source and cost are a limitation considering the usage demand. We compared a low-cost solar-powered Arclight ophthalmoscope with a standard ophthalmoscope Heine K180 in terms of ease of examination, usage, field of view, color rendition and patient comfort. Two clinically trained optometrists examined 28 patients and graded the ease of retinal examination, ease of use and assessed cup-disc ratio, which is an important diagnostic parameter for glaucoma, patient comfort and length of examination (scale 1-4). The examiners had good agreement for all assessments. Of a total of 78 examinations, only 8(10.3%) did not result in cup-disc ratio measurement in the undilated pupil condition using both devices. Ease of use was scored higher for Arclight than Heine but this was not statistically significant. In conditions like large discs, the Arclight resulted in easier examinations due to its larger field of view. Color rendition was better with the Heine device. In undilated pupils, the patients often reported that there was significant glare with Heine, however, post-dilation, they reported more glare with Arclight compared to Heine (73% versus 55%). The performance of Arclight was comparable to that of Heine and can be considered a low-cost alternative to the standard direct ophthalmoscope especially in large-scale patient examinations in developing countries where cost might be a factor.

Experiments such as CHORUS at CERN require the inspection of a large amount of nuclear emulsion plates exposed to particle beams. Rare events need to be found, measured and analysed. Their features are stored as grains in microscopic dimensions in a three-dimensional stack of plates. A new, fully automatic immersion microscope system was developed for this purpose. It features high resolution, small depth of focus, large working distance, large field of view and synchronization of illumination and detector. An additional requirement is given by variations in the refraction index and in the relative thickness of immersion oil and emulsion. The approach used here is an imaging system based on a vario objective lens (variable oil immersion) with extreme numerical aperture, large working distance and wide field, combined with a matched high-aperture Koehler illuminator. The light source is a mercury are lamp, combined with a filter package for the g-line. It includes liquid crystal elements for synchronized shuttering and variable attenuation. The theoretical resolution is less than 1 micron in x, y, z within a volume of 0.5mm diameter (x, y) times 1 mm scanning depth (z) in all situations within a predefined index range (1.49 to 1.54). Three identical pieces of the system have been built. The experimentally measured resolution confirms the expectations and is better than 1 micron in all three dimensions. This is the result of a complex process of system design and manufacturing, unifying optical, opto-mechanical and optoelectronical contributions. This process spans from the early stages of feasibility and manufacturing up to the test and adjustment procedures. The three prototypes are operational since the fall of 1998 in the frame of the CHORUS project. Practical experience and application results are presented.
