Reconfigurable diffractive lenses manufactured in liquid crystal are presented. The lenses show an unprecedented performance in terms of active diameter and focal distance range when compared to any other transparent adaptive lens. The lenses are characterized by an active area free of electronic components, with a fill factor of 98% which combined with a low operating voltage (<10V(rms)), open for applications ranging from eye contact lenses to space applications. The addressing of the liquid crystal is done exclusively from the periphery of the device. The lenses are based on tunable spiral diffractive lenses (SDL) for which the focal length may be changed by changing the topological charge, i.e. twist of the spiral in the lens. The twist in the resulting wavefront is eliminated by cascading two spiral plates with opposite twists emulating a conventional diffractive lens. The presented lenses have a tuning range from -2 to +2 diopters and an active diameter of 25mm.

We report optical and optomechanical design of a new endoscopic system for the urinary bladder. On the basis of the specification, key requirements of the optics are derived. The required high resolution goes hand in hand with a depth of field much smaller than the intended object distance range and raises the need for image focusing. Such a focus mechanism was realized in the small endoscope tip volume with the help of smart memory alloy wires and a matching optical and mechanical design. MTF measurements and practical tests demonstrate a proper function of a prototype of the device.

A system is developed for simulating the image quality and dysphotopsia of multifocal lenses. To achieve this, the simulation modifies a High Dynamic Range (HDR) photograph by blurring it with the lens' point spread function in MATLAB. Dysphotopsias are instances of unwanted or missing light within the eye. Common forms of dysphotopsia include glare, starburst (radial lines emanating from bright sources), and halo (rings of light surrounding bright sources) with the latter two typically occurring at night or in other high contrast settings. Dysphotopsia is considered the most common complaint of patients after successful cataract surgery and have thus earned significant attention in the context of intraocular lenses (IOLs). There have been fewer studies of multifocal contact lens dysphotopsia, but this is despite the documented impact dysphotopsia has on the image quality of multifocal lenses. This simulation is the first handling of dysphotopsia that combines HDR images and specifics of the lens design to predict how the dysphotopsia will appear to patients. Being able to show patients accurate simulations of dysphotopsia has the benefit of setting proper patient expectations before they begin using multifocal lenses. Furthermore, these simulated images can also potentially help diagnose patient problems by giving patients an accurate baseline to compare to.

Vehicle vibration reduction technology is of great significance in the modern automobile industry, as it directly affects ride comfort and driving stability. Researching and developing suspension optimization design methods based on multibody dynamics not only helps solve the problems faced by current vehicle vibration reduction technology, but also provides new ideas and methods for the development of future automobile technology. This article took vehicle suspension as the research object and conducted multibody dynamic optimization design on it. Firstly, this article elaborated on the research background and significance of vehicle vibration reduction technology, and summarized the important developments and challenges faced in this field. On this basis, this article combined mechanical vibration control with the design principles of vehicle suspension systems, and established a multibody dynamic optimization design method based on multibody systems. This article aims to improve the ride comfort and driving stability of the entire vehicle by optimizing the suspension structure and parameters to suppress vehicle vibration. The research results of this article provide new approaches and methods for the design of vehicle suspension structures and vibration reduction research. © 2024 SPIE.

Continuous tunable lenses have significant prospect to replace conventional bulky fixed power lens system. However, light weight, fast response, large aperture (>1 cm) tunable lens system remained an active challenge in the field of adaptive optics. While many approaches have been reported so far, very few can be realized for practical application of optics that requires large aperture size tunable lenses. Gradient Refractive Index (GRIN) liquid crystal lenses are one of approach which gives good control over the continuous tunability, however, large aperture device suffers from very low switching speed. In this paper, without compromising the switching speed, we are reporting 5 cm aperture size GRIN liquid crystal based continuous tunable focus lens. Reported approach implements Fresnel lens like parabolic shaped segmented phase profile instead of continuous phase, which is obtained from segmented voltage distribution. The designed lens is flat, fast switching (<500 ms), thin (< 2 mm), light weight (< 10 gm), low voltage driven (< 5 V), also tunable continuously between positive to negative power. Such compact system with good optical quality scopes for potential application in eyeglasses to solve presbyopia, accomodation-convergence mismatch issue in emerging head mounted display technology, and many other imaging systems.

Cygnus is a dual beam high-energy radiographic x-ray source. Ten years ago, three large zoom lenses were assembled to collect images from 200 mm x 200 mm square scintillators. The zoom capability allows zooming down to a 60 mm x 60 mm picture from the scintillator. current radiographic imaging needs now require larger 270 mm x 270 mm square scintillators and the capability to use both 92 mm x 92 mm and 62 mm x 62 mm CCD cameras, and a new lens design to meet these needs. This zoom lens incorporates 11 elements and is designed to be telecentric. It images a scintillator emitting light peaking at 435 nm, so special glass types are required for the lens elements. Much larger elliptical pellicles are needed to deflect the scintillator light out of the x-ray path into the lens. The optical axis of the imaging system must be colinear with the x-ray axis. Two scintillators are positioned in each of two Cygnus x-ray axes, for a total of four scintillators and four lens systems. An optional configuration will be shown, enabling two lens systems imaging opposite sides of a single scintillator, for a total of four lenses and two scintillators. Although this configuration has advantages, it suffers from crosstalk. Care must be taken to analyze the anti-reflection coatings applied to all the elements in the imaging chain, including the CCD array and its vacuum window. The evolution of our Cygnus radiographic systems over the last two decades will be discussed. © 2023 SPIE.

Liquid-core cylindrical lens (LCL) is glued together by two cylindrical lenses, translucent liquid with refractive index n is injected into the liquid core, based on focal plane imaging method, the refractive index n has a one-to-one dependence on the focal length f of the LCL, n= f(n). Two kind of LCL, symmetrical liquid-core cylindrical lens (SLCL) and asymmetrical liquid-core cylindrical lens (ALCL) had been designed and fabricated, the refractive index measurement accuracy is superior to 0.0002 RIU. Based on the refractive index spatial measurement capability of ALCL, the equivalent refractive index thin layer movement method for rapidly and accurately measuring the diffusion coefficient D under the infinite dilution condition was applied to measure an aqueous CaCl2 solution at temperature of 303 K, and the result D were simulated and verified by ray tracing method. Comparing with the traditional method, this method has the advantages of visualization of diffusion process, strong anti-interference capability, rapid measurement, which can be widely used in medical, chemical, biological, environmental protection or other fields.

Freeform technology is one of the most promising solutions for enhancing the capability of aberration correction and improving performance of optical systems. Aiming to demonstrate the freedom and flexibility of optical system design, several challenging design examples using freeform surface are presented, including two wide-angle camera lenses adopting even and odd pedal polynomial formulations for symmetric optical surface description, and an anamorphic cinema lens employing non-rotationally symmetric surfaces for capturing a wider aspect ratio and offering a 1.33 x squeeze factor on a 4:3 sensor size. Methods and constraints for designing and optimizing the optical systems are discussed. The optical performances of these design examples are analyzed and the results verify the practicability and effectiveness of the proposed formulations and design strategies in the field of freeform imaging optical design.

As drone technology rapidly evolves, the limitations of current communication systems, particularly regarding flight distance, bandwidth, and latency, become increasingly evident. This study addresses these challenges by integrating 5G technology with unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems. Our approach employs a 300-meter aerial 5G network coupled with an advanced onboard 5G intelligent terminal, significantly improving drone communication. The paper details the terminal's hardware and software architecture, emphasizing enhancements in processing, interface configurations, environmental adaptability and cutting-edge software design. Extensive testing across various conditions demonstrates the system's robustness, efficiency, and adaptability, notably in maintaining stable communication across diverse environments. This research contributes to global sustainable technology trends and paves the way for future developments, such as the integration of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the Internet of Things. Demand for High NA objective lenses with diffraction limited image quality is growing. This demand translates in design more complex optical system with many optical components. In order to optimize the most favorable arrangement of optical components new design methodology based on functional separation lens group in high numerical aperture (NA) objective was developed. For this purpose, all lens components were divided on the three-lens group: front group, middle group and output lens group. The front lens group includes front lens (thick meniscus for dry type of objective or thick piano-convex lens for immersion objective) and several a planatic shape meniscus lenses. The middle lens group consists of several cemented lens components (doublets or triplets) and output lens group includes "Double Gauss" lens system or combination of cemented doublet with one or two singlet lenses. The total number of lenses in such types of optical system can reach 15-16 or even more. design an optimal composition (optical components arrangement) for high numerical aperture objective lens will be discussed. Quantitative related parameter for optimal objective lens component's structure will be proposed.
